What Did DemandSphere Report?
DemandSphere, a search-analytics vendor that sells rank and AI-search tracking, published a short post on October 1, 2026 saying AI Overviews on branded queries “have more than tripled in the month of September.” The post says SEO Chris Long had shared the observation that day and that Search Engine Roundtable’s Barry Schwartz had covered it, and that DemandSphere pulled its own platform data and is “seeing the same thing.” Its measure is the daily share of branded keywords tracked in its platform for which Google returned an AI Overview, sampled once per day per keyword, across all markets and devices (DemandSphere). MarketScale carried the finding on October 16, attributing it to DemandSphere data cited by Search Engine Roundtable (MarketScale).
The post gives no sample size. It does not say how many keywords, brands or industries the figures cover, and MarketScale does not supply one either.
What Does the DemandSphere Series Show?
% of tracked branded keywords (sample size not disclosed)
Selected days in date order from DemandSphere's 29-day table. The post does not say how many keywords or brands are tracked. An Overview counts as present whether or not the brand is cited in it.
The chart shows the rise was not a steady climb. In the full table, presence sat between 26% and 28% through September 5, moved to about 33% to 35% from September 6 to 9, and stayed mostly around 28% to 34% for the next two weeks. On four days (September 18, 20, 23 and 24) it jumped to between about 47% and 57%, falling back within a day or two each time. From September 26 it stayed high: 69.21%, then 90.48%, 80.23% and 82.06%. The post has no figure for September 30 and says DemandSphere is pulling earlier months.
What Does the Metric Leave Out?
Three things. First, citations: DemandSphere counts an Overview as present “regardless of whether brand itself is cited.” Second, clicks: nothing in the post measures traffic. Third, the keyword set: it is DemandSphere’s tracked list, which the post does not size or describe. A rise to 82% in that set does not mean 82% of searches for your company now show an Overview.
Did Google Change Anything?
DemandSphere says Google “has not made any announcements on this change,” and we found no Google documentation of one. Two other things were happening at the same time. Google’s September 2026 spam update ran from September 24 to October 8, per our earlier coverage, which overlaps the sharpest part of the climb. And rank-tracking vendors, DemandSphere among them, reported in the same period that some of the Google results they collected were unreliable; see our report on Nozzle’s figures. Nothing we read ties either to this series. The cause is unknown.
Why Would a Brand-Name Overview Matter to a Company?
A search for a company’s name is often someone checking who it is. An Overview on that search is Google’s summary, shown above the links and built from sources Google chooses. Our guides on what a Google AI Overview is and whether AI Overviews say what their sources say cover the feature and its accuracy. What it says about you depends on the pages it draws from, which can include earned coverage, your own site and review profiles. Does Coverage Change Brand Search? covers the demand side.
What This Means for Anyone Buying a Placement
No one can promise that a placement will appear in, or be described correctly by, an Overview on your name. This data does not measure citations, and we know of no published method that guarantees one. What a company can do is check. Our recommendation, not a Google rule: search your company name in a logged-out browser each week, record whether an Overview appears, what it says and which sources it links. If it misstates a fact, correct the underlying page where you control it, and use Google’s feedback option on the answer. A paid article is advertising, should be labeled as sponsored, and is not a route to a particular summary. For tracking, see How to Track Branded Search in Search Console and How to Measure Whether a Placement Worked.
Methodology and Limitations
Four limits apply. First, every figure comes from one vendor’s post, and we did not see its raw data or open Search Engine Roundtable’s coverage. Second, the post gives no sample size. Third, the chart shows 7 of the 29 days in the table. Fourth, we did not run any searches ourselves, and whether an Overview appears varies by user, place and day.
Conclusion
If DemandSphere’s data reflects searches for your name, Google is now often answering a branded search before it shows a link. The data is one vendor’s, with no stated sample size, so treat it as a reason to check your own results rather than as a measured fact about your brand.
Frequently Asked Questions
What did DemandSphere find about AI Overviews and branded searches?
DemandSphere reported that the share of its tracked branded keywords returning a Google AI Overview rose from 26.12% on September 1, 2026 to 82.06% on September 29, with a peak of 90.48% on September 27.
How many keywords did DemandSphere track?
The post does not say, and MarketScale's report of it gives no sample size either.
Does that mean AI Overviews now mention my brand?
That is not what the data measures. DemandSphere counts an Overview as present whether or not the brand is cited in it.
Did Google announce a change?
DemandSphere says Google "has not made any announcements on this change," and we found no Google documentation of one.
Can a press placement control what an AI Overview says about my company?
No source we read shows that. Overviews draw on pages Google selects, and no placement can guarantee a citation or particular wording.
What should a company do?
Our recommendation: check your brand-name results regularly, record what any Overview says and links to, and fix errors on pages you control.
