What Are the Best Alternatives to Riverside?
Five tools record remote interviews the way Riverside does, by capturing each participant locally rather than recording the compressed call: Zencastr, Descript, SquadCast, StreamYard and Restream. Zencastr, Descript and SquadCast are built for podcasts. StreamYard and Restream are live-streaming studios that also record. Descript and SquadCast are now one company: SquadCast's pricing page says it "has joined Descript" and sells the same plan names at the same prices, though it still runs its own recording studio and site (SquadCast).
| Tool | Entry paid plan | Recording quality stated | Free option | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Riverside | Pro $24/mo billed annually ($288) | Up to 4K video, 48 kHz audio on Pro | Free plan: 2 hours of multi-track recording (one-off), 720p, watermark | Riverside |
| Zencastr | No paid self-serve price shown | 4K video, 48 kHz WAV | Free plan, 6 participants | Zencastr |
| Descript | Hobbyist $16 annual or $24 monthly, per person | Export 1080p on Hobbyist, 4K on Creator and Business | Free plan, 720p export | Descript |
| SquadCast | Hobbyist $16 annual or $24 monthly, per person | 48 kHz 16-bit WAV; video up to 1080p at 30fps | Free plan, 1 recording hour a month | SquadCast |
| StreamYard | Essential $14.99 yearly or $18.99 monthly | Full HD streaming; 4K local recordings on Advanced | Free plan, 2 hours of local recording a month | StreamYard |
| Restream | Standard $19/mo | 4K recording on Professional ($49) | Free plan, 2 channels | Restream |
What Does Riverside Cost in 2026?
Riverside's Pro plan costs $24 a month billed annually, "Billed $288 annually," and its yearly view shows Grow at $34 and Webinar at $79 a month; Business is "Contact Sales." The page disagrees with itself on monthly billing. Its monthly toggle, as rendered in a browser on October 19, 2026, shows Pro at $35, Grow at $45 and Webinar at $99, while its FAQ and comparison table say "Pro drops from $29 to $24/month, Grow from $39 to $34, and Webinar from $99 to $79." The Webinar card also says "Billed $408 annually," the same figure as Grow, which does not match $79 a month (Riverside).
We suggest relying on the annual prices, which every part of the page agrees on, and confirming the monthly price at checkout. The page's HTML also still carries a notice that it may be "in the staging environment"; that notice did not display when we loaded the live page in a browser. Our Riverside vs Zencastr comparison of October 10 recorded the same staging notice and quoted Riverside's "starting at $24/month," which still holds.
On features, Pro lists "Up to 4K video," "48kHz audio," no watermark, unlimited transcriptions and "15 hrs of separate track downloads"; the free plan offers "2 hours of multi-track recordings," "Up to 720p video quality," a watermark and "44.1 kHz audio quality." The FAQ says "Recording itself is unlimited" and the hour caps apply to separate-track downloads, while the comparison table lists 5 and 15 recording hours a month for Pro and Grow. Paid plans start with a 14-day free trial.
What Do the Alternatives Cost?
On annual billing, the entry paid plans run from StreamYard's $14.99 to Riverside's $24 a month, with Descript and SquadCast at $16 per person; Zencastr's recording plan is free.
US dollars per month, billed annually
Source: Riverside, "Plans & Pricing"; Descript, "Pricing"; SquadCast, "Pricing & Podcast Cost"; StreamYard, "Plans & Pricing." Read October 19, 2026.
Zencastr is not charted because its recording plan is free and it shows no paid self-serve price. Restream is not charted because its pricing page shows no annual figures, only "Save 20%"; its Standard plan is $19 a month on monthly billing. Descript and SquadCast are one company with the same plan prices. Plans differ in hours, resolution and seats.
The chart shows a gap of about $9 a month between the cheapest and the dearest entry plan. Recording hours, resolution caps and seats differ far more than the entry price, so compare limits before price.
How Does Zencastr Compare?
Zencastr gives away the features Riverside charges for. Its home page says "Unlimited studio-quality recording and hosting, for Free," with "4K video & 48Khz audio," "Local recording & cloud back up" and "HD livestreaming," plus editing by chatting with an AI "Producer" and publishing to "Spotify, Apple, and YouTube" (Zencastr). Its pricing page lists the free plan, now called Vibecastr, with 6 participants, 4K video, 48 kHz WAV recording, unlimited track storage, unlimited transcription hours and 4 seats; an Enterprise plan is "Custom" with "Talk to sales," and a "Producer" column shows no price (Zencastr pricing). That matches what we found on October 10.
Fits: small shows that want full-quality recording at no cost. Limit: 6 participants against Riverside's 10, and no published paid tier between free and Enterprise. Read its terms first: our guide on whether a recording platform can use your interview to train AI found that Zencastr licenses recordings for AI training.
How Does Descript Compare?
Descript is an editing-first tool with a recording studio called Rooms. Its pricing page lists Free, Hobbyist ($16 or $24), Creator ($24 or $35), Business ($50 or $65) and Enterprise (custom), "per person / month," with annual billing "Saving up to 35% over monthly plan." Hobbyist includes "10 media hours / month" and 1080p export; Creator 30 media hours and 4K export; Business 40 media hours. Rooms recording hours are 2, 5, 15 and 25 a month from Free to Business, and every plan allows 10 room participants (Descript).
The page shows two prices per plan beside a Monthly/Annual toggle without labeling each figure; SquadCast's page, which sells the same plans, labels $16 as annual and $24 as monthly. Fits: teams that edit by transcript. Limit: Rooms hours are capped by plan, at 5 a month on Hobbyist.
How Does SquadCast Compare?
SquadCast is a browser recording studio that now sells Descript's plans. Its pricing page, headed "SquadCast has joined Descript!", lists Free (1 recording hour a month), Hobbyist ($16 a month billed annually or $24 monthly; 10 recording hours), Creator ($24 or $35; 30 hours) and Business ($50 or $65; 40 hours). Its FAQ says it records each participant locally in separate tracks at "48 kHz sample rate and 16-bit depth" WAV, with video "up to 1080p at 30fps," and that "if 3 people record 1 hour together, only 1 hour will be withdrawn from your account." Extra time costs "$5 per additional hour," and unused hours roll over up to "twice the number of monthly recording hours" (SquadCast).
Its home page promotes "SquadCast + Descript: Two tools for the price of one" (SquadCast); its FAQ still describes it as "an independently-funded company," wording that predates the Descript deal, which our earlier guide dates to 2023. Fits: audio-first shows that want per-session hour counting and rollover. Limit: a 1080p video ceiling, below the 4K that Riverside and Zencastr state.
How Do StreamYard and Restream Compare?
Both are live-streaming studios first. StreamYard lists Free (StreamYard logo, "Local recordings - 2 hours/mo," 6 on-screen participants), Essential ($18.99 monthly or $14.99 billed yearly; "Full HD (1080p)"), Core ($44.99 or $35.99; "Cloud recording," "Unlimited local recordings," "50 hours of permanent storage") and Advanced ($88.99 or $68.99; "4K (2160p) local recordings"). Its paid individual plans carry a 7-day free trial and a "7-day money-back guarantee," and the page says Essential, Core and Advanced are "for individual use only" (StreamYard).
Restream lists Free, Standard ($19 a month), Professional ($49; "Record in 4K Ultra HD"), Business ($239) and Enterprise. It advertises "Save 20 %" on annual billing but shows no annual prices. Its Studio offers "Split feed downloads," described as "Download separate feeds for each guest or source" (Restream). Fits: shows that stream live and record at the same time. Limit: both pages describe streaming far more than podcast production.
Do These Tools Train AI on Your Recordings?
The terms differ, and they matter as much as price when you record a guest. Our October 12 guide read the terms of several recording platforms and found that Zencastr licenses recordings for AI training, that Riverside names AI training, and that Descript allows it unless a user switches off a data-sharing setting (Can a Podcast Recording Platform Use Your Interview to Train AI?). We did not read StreamYard's or Restream's terms for this guide and make no claim about them. Get the guest's consent to record either way; see how to get consent to record a podcast guest.
Where Is Riverside Still the Better Choice?
Riverside is the better choice for larger sessions, webinars and a single paid stack. Its FAQ says “You can record up to 10 participants (9 guests + the host)” against Zencastr's 6 (Riverside FAQ); its Webinar plan adds registration, Q&A, polls and "HubSpot integration," which none of the podcast tools here lists; and its Pro plan pairs 4K video with hosting and unlimited transcriptions at $24 a month billed annually (Riverside). SquadCast's 1080p ceiling and the streaming tools' production focus are narrower on those points. This is our reading of listed specs, not a test.
- Free, full-quality recording: Zencastr, subject to its terms.
- Editing by transcript: Descript.
- Per-session hour counting: SquadCast.
- Live and recorded at once: StreamYard or Restream.
- Webinars and larger sessions: Riverside.
Final Verdict: What Is the Best Riverside Alternative?
There is no single best. Zencastr is the cheapest start on its own pages, Descript and SquadCast suit editing and hour-counted sessions, and StreamYard or Restream suit streaming; Riverside keeps the edge for webinars and larger sessions. How We Compared Riverside and Its Alternatives
We read each vendor's pricing and home pages on October 19, 2026, using a browser for Riverside because its page sets prices by script. We used U.S. dollar list prices, did not create accounts and did not test recording quality or reliability. AI-training statements come from our October 12 guide, not from a fresh reading of each vendor's terms.
