Does It Matter Which Podcast App Your Episode Is Heard In After Maple Media Bought Castro?

For a guest, very little: an episode reaches most apps from the same RSS feed. Podnews reported on October 12, 2026 that Maple Media has bought the independent app Castro, and that independent apps’ share of UK downloads in its data fell from 38% in 2024 to 31% in 2026.

Key Findings

  • Podnews reported on October 12, 2026, citing Castro’s App Store listing, that Maple Media bought Castro; terms were not disclosed, and Podnews said it had reached out to the previous owner, Dustin Bluck (Podnews). Apple’s App Store lists the seller as Maple Media Apps, LLC (App Store).
  • Podnews describes Maple Media as “a company that buys apps” and lists its earlier podcast app purchases: Player FM (April 2020), Podkicker (July 2020) and Breaker (February 2022) (same article).
  • In Podnews’ analysis, independent apps’ share of UK podcast downloads was 38% in 2024, 36% in 2025 and 31% in 2026 (same article).
  • In a July 23, 2026 essay, Bluck wrote that “Independent podcast apps are not growing as a category” and cited RAJAR MIDAS figures showing weekly UK podcast listening hours falling from 111 million to 93 million between the Spring 2025 and Spring 2026 waves (Uncommon Apps).
  • Neither source says how many listeners Castro has, and we found no statement from Castro or Maple Media about plans for the app.

What Happened to Castro?

Podnews reported the sale as an exclusive, based on Castro’s App Store listing; the price and terms are not public (Podnews). We checked the listing on October 13, 2026: Apple shows the seller of “Castro: Podcast App & Player” as Maple Media Apps, LLC (App Store). Bluck had acquired Castro in January 2024 from its previous owner, which Podnews describes as “a VC company called Tiny.” Podnews said it reached out to Bluck for comment and reported no response. We found no Castro or Maple Media statement about plans, so we do not report what will happen to the app.

What Do the Download Shares Show?

Podnews reports that the share of UK downloads going to independent apps slipped each year.

Order is chronological, not by size. Podnews' own analysis of UK downloads; the article does not define "independent" apps or say which apps are counted.

The chart shows a three-year decline in one publisher’s UK data; it does not say why, and Podnews does not list which apps count as independent.

What Did Castro’s Owner Argue Before the Sale?

In “Podcast Apps: A Framework for Dying Slowly with Dignity,” published July 23, 2026, Bluck wrote that “Independent podcast apps are not growing as a category.” He argued that podcast growth has come mostly from platforms such as YouTube, that app user bases are flat and aging, and that no app released after 2020 has gained meaningful traction. He also wrote that he had no concrete demographic data for his own app, so his conclusions are inferred from wider trends. The essay sets out priorities for Castro, such as respecting creator intent, private feeds, video and accessibility, and does not mention a sale (Uncommon Apps).

These are Bluck’s citations of RAJAR; we did not open RAJAR’s own data. He also cites Edison Research’s The Infinite Dial 2026 for YouTube’s growth, without a figure in the text we read. Does the App Matter for a Guest Appearance?

A show’s episode usually reaches many apps from one RSS feed, so a guest cannot choose where it is heard. Our inference, not a finding in either source: because the audience is spread across apps and video, the useful questions for a booking are whether the show publishes video, whether it reports downloads by app and platform, and whether guest links appear in show notes, which every app displays from the feed. See how to read podcast analytics, how to write show notes and Spotify versus YouTube for a guest.

What This Means for Anyone Buying a Placement

Do not value a podcast placement by the list of apps it appears in. Ask the show for its own audience figures and how they are measured. A paid spot is advertising and should be disclosed as such; nothing here suggests an app sale changes disclosure rules.

Methodology and Limitations

Four limits apply. First, the shares are Podnews’ UK data and may not reflect other markets. Second, Podnews’ article does not define “independent.” Third, Bluck owned Castro and wrote before the sale, so his essay is an interested view. Fourth, we did not test Castro, and we confirmed only the seller name on Apple’s listing, not the terms.

Conclusion

An app sale is news about one distribution channel, and the one before it was a declining share for independent apps. For guests, it reinforces checking a show’s video presence and reporting, not its app list.
