What Changed, and When?
OpenAI's ChatGPT release notes list “GPT-6 and Intelligent UI in ChatGPT” on October 7, 2026. The rollout started that day for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users and “expands to Free and Go starting tomorrow” (OpenAI release notes). Paid plans use GPT-6 Sol and Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna. The announcement describes answers that combine text, visuals and interactive elements (OpenAI). Neither page says anything about how links to websites are opened or tagged.
Within days, site owners began reporting that ChatGPT traffic had dropped in their analytics. The most detailed account comes from Cedric Huesler, who wrote on LinkedIn that ChatGPT “didn't stop sending visitors” but that links now open without a referrer and without the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag, so analytics records the visits as Direct (LinkedIn).
What Does the Data Show?
Huesler compared October 9 to 13 with the week before on “~500 pages where ChatGPT drove 5%+ of visits.” He reports ChatGPT-attributed visits down about 31,000 a day and Direct up about 26,000 a day on the same pages, while search traffic fell 7%, “the same as everywhere else.”

One analyst's sampled data from four days, on pages he selected because ChatGPT was a large share of their traffic. The first row is a decrease and the second an increase; both are shown as sizes. The post does not name the sites or the analytics product.
The chart shows that most of the lost ChatGPT visits reappeared as Direct on the same pages, which is what a tagging change, rather than a real loss of visitors, would look like.
He offers one behavioral check. On mobile, the share of visitors seeing the site's consent banner, a sign they are new to the site, “went from 36% to 44%,” and he says the figure for ChatGPT visitors is 55%. His reading is that the new Direct visitors behave like ChatGPT visitors. That is an inference from his data, not a measurement of where each visit came from.
Who Else Has Seen It?
Search Engine Roundtable reported the change on October 14, 2026. Its report says the SEO Sébastien Billard saw a drop in ChatGPT human traffic since October 9, and that the issue had also been flagged to the site by Chee Lo. The report says, “We are not sure if it was directly intentional” (Search Engine Roundtable). These are observations by practitioners, not a confirmed change, and we did not find an OpenAI statement about it.
What Has OpenAI Said?
Nothing we could find. The release notes and GPT-6 announcement do not mention links, referrers or tracking parameters. Our earlier guides quoted OpenAI's publishers and developers FAQ, which said ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links. When we tried to read that FAQ again on October 14, 2026, its address returned a different help article, about the retirement of ChatGPT Atlas, so we could not confirm whether OpenAI still documents the tag. We are not claiming OpenAI removed the tag on purpose; the evidence is that tagged visits fell and Direct rose at the same time on one analyst's sample of pages.
What Should You Do in Analytics?
These steps are our recommendation, not an OpenAI or Google rule. Huesler's own advice is similar: report ChatGPT and Direct together for now, watch Direct on deep pages that ChatGPT used to send visits to, and annotate the break in the trend line, which he dates to “Oct 8–10.”
- Annotate the date. Mark October 7 to 10, 2026 in Google Analytics 4 or your analytics tool so later readers do not mistake a tagging change for a collapse in ChatGPT interest.
- Compare ChatGPT and Direct together. If ChatGPT-tagged sessions fell and Direct rose on the same landing pages, treat the two as linked until the cause is known. Our guide to tracking AI referral traffic in GA4 shows where those channels sit.
- Look at landing pages, not the homepage. Direct visits to deep pages with long URLs are less likely to be people typing an address.
- Check server logs if you have them. Bot visits from OpenAI's crawlers are separate from human clicks, so a change in one does not prove a change in the other.
What This Means for Anyone Buying a Placement
If a vendor reports that coverage or a placement drove ChatGPT referrals, ask which dates the report covers. From October 8, 2026, a fall in ChatGPT-tagged visits may be a measurement change, and a rise in Direct may hide AI referrals. The same applies in reverse: no vendor can show reliable ChatGPT click counts for this period from referrer data alone. Our guides on whether you can tell which AI sent a visitor and how to measure whether a placement worked cover what can and cannot be measured. A paid placement is advertising, and nothing here suggests any placement earns ChatGPT citations or clicks.
Methodology and Limitations
Four limits apply. First, the traffic figures come from one analyst's LinkedIn post, based on four days of sampled data across pages he does not name, and the post's own timeline is loose: it dates the trend break to October 8 to 10 and also describes a drop on October 13. Second, the other reports are second-hand through Search Engine Roundtable. Third, OpenAI has not commented in any source we read, and the help article we previously cited for the UTM tag could not be read at its address on October 14, 2026. Fourth, we did not test ChatGPT links ourselves.
Conclusion
The evidence so far points to ChatGPT visits being counted as Direct since GPT-6 arrived, not to ChatGPT sending fewer visitors, but it rests on one analyst's early data and has no confirmation from OpenAI. Until that changes, read ChatGPT and Direct together for any period after October 7, 2026.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my ChatGPT referral traffic drop in October 2026?
One possible reason is that, since GPT-6 rolled out on October 7 and 8, 2026, analysts report ChatGPT links opening without a referrer or utm_source tag, so analytics counts the visits as Direct. OpenAI has not confirmed this in any source we read.
When did GPT-6 come to ChatGPT?
OpenAI's release notes date it to October 7, 2026 for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, expanding to Free and Go from the next day.
Does ChatGPT still add utm_source=chatgpt.com to links?
Analysts report the tag is missing since GPT-6. OpenAI's release notes do not mention a change, and we could not read OpenAI's publisher FAQ at its previous address on October 14, 2026.
How big is the effect?
In one analyst's sample of about 500 pages where ChatGPT drove at least 5% of visits, ChatGPT visits fell about 31,000 a day and Direct rose about 26,000 a day, comparing October 9 to 13 with the week before.
How should I report ChatGPT traffic now?
Our recommendation is to report ChatGPT and Direct together for periods after October 7, 2026, annotate the change in your analytics, and compare landing pages rather than totals.
Did ChatGPT stop citing websites?
The reports describe a tracking change, not fewer citations. The analyst's data shows Direct visits rising on the same pages where ChatGPT visits fell.
