Google Business Profile vs Apple Business at a Glance
“Winner” is marked only where the two companies' own documentation shows a real difference. Both services are free, so the useful question is what each lets you control. Pricing checked October 2026.

What Is Google Business Profile?
Google Business Profile is Google's free listing for a business that meets customers in person, which lets a verified owner manage how the business appears on Google Search and Maps.
Google says a profile lets you “manage how your business shows up on Maps and Search at no charge” (Google, Get started). Owners can update hours and contact details, upload photos and videos, reply to reviews and post offers and announcements (Google, Business Profile and brand profile). For businesses that sell only online, Google offers a separate “brand profile”, but says “Only select e-commerce retailers can claim and manage brand profiles”. Our guide to setting up a Google Business Profile walks through eligibility and verification.
What Is Apple Business?
Apple Business is Apple's free platform, launched April 14, 2026, that combines the location and brand tools of the former Apple Business Connect with device management, business email and ads on Apple Maps.
Apple announced it on March 24, 2026, saying “Brand management tools previously available in Apple Business Connect will now be available through Apple Business” and that existing Business Connect data, “including claimed locations”, would migrate automatically (Apple Newsroom). The old guide now carries one line: “Apple Business Connect is now Apple Business” (Apple Support). Apple's guide defines the place card as the card customers see in Maps, and says it also appears in Siri, Calendar, Messages and Spotlight (Intro to Apple Business). Step-by-step claiming is in our guide to claiming your Apple Business Connect listing.
Google Business Profile vs Apple Business: Pricing
Google Business Profile and Apple Business cost nothing to claim and manage: Google says “at no charge” and Apple says “a free service in the U.S. and 200+ countries and regions”. The costs start with advertising, and neither company publishes a fixed price per click or tap. Pricing checked October 2026.
| Item | Google Business Profile | Apple Business |
|---|---|---|
| Listing | Free (“at no charge”) | Free (“a free service”) |
| Ads | Google Ads campaign from the Google Maps app; Google recommends a daily budget; prices not published as a list | Ads on Maps with a monthly budget maximum; spend is “the sum of the cost of each customer tap”; per-tap price not published; possible one-time $150 credit |
| Ad billing | Set in Google Ads | Usually charged every $500 spent or every seven days, whichever comes first |
| Other paid extras | None needed for the listing | iCloud storage from $0.99 per user per month; AppleCare+ for Business from $6.99 per month (U.S.) |
| Ad eligibility limits | Service-area businesses and sensitive categories cannot use the Maps-app ad flow | U.S. (excluding American Samoa and Northern Mariana Islands) and Canada only; no ads for home services, weapons, bail bonds, crypto ATMs or politics |
Sources: Google, Get started, Advertise your business on Google; Apple Newsroom, Promote your business on Apple Maps, Create ads, Understand the billing cycle and Reporting options and metric definitions. Google also says “There's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google” (Google, local ranking tips).
Eligibility: Who Can Have a Listing
Google Business Profile is limited to businesses that meet customers face to face: Google says a business “must make in-person contact with customers during its stated hours” and lists “online-only businesses” as ineligible. Apple's Apple Business guide describes adding locations with an address and a map pin but, in the pages we read on October 9, 2026, states no equivalent in-person rule.
- Google: storefronts, service-area businesses that visit customers, and hybrids qualify; virtual offices and P.O. boxes do not (Business eligibility and ownership guidelines; Guidelines for representing your business).
- Apple: “Every location is associated to a brand”, and you add each location by searching for it on the map or entering its address (About locations; Add a single location). Apple's rules on names, categories, hours and websites are in Configure location attributes. We found no Apple topic on service-area businesses that hide their address.
- Countries: Google lists the countries where profiles can be added (Supported countries/regions). Apple's availability table, read October 9, 2026, leaves Brand and Location Management out for China mainland, South Korea and Ukraine (Feature availability).
If your company is not eligible for a Google profile, a branded search still shows other results; see whether a Google Business Profile affects brand search.
Verification and Claiming
Google decides which verification methods a business sees, from phone or text, email, video call, video recording or postcard, and reviews take up to 5 business days. Apple Business offers a phone call for some places already on Apple Maps; otherwise the organization verifies with two methods, such as a D-U-N-S Number or EIN and a DNS record, within 60 days of signing up.
| Step | Google Business Profile | Apple Business |
|---|---|---|
| Who picks the method | Google: methods “are automatically determined by Google and can't be changed” | Apple offers a phone call for some existing places; otherwise organization verification |
| Methods | Phone or text, email, live video call, video recording, postcard | Phone call to the number Apple has on record; or two of: D-U-N-S or EIN, DNS TXT record, App Store Connect, official document upload |
| Time | Up to 5 business days after you finish; most postcards arrive within 14 days | Up to five business days for organization verification |
| Deadline | None stated | 60 days after sign-up, or the organization is deleted |
| Disputes over control | Request ownership; current owner has 3 days to respond | Request Transfer with documents; review up to five business days |
Sources: Google, Verify your business and Request ownership; Apple, Sign up and verify your organization and Add a single location. Both companies warn against sharing codes or claiming a place you do not run. Apple's guide says that if the organization is not approved within 60 days, it is deleted along with its data.
Maximum business days each company says a review can take, as published October 10, 2026
Source: Google, Verify your business; Apple Business User Guide, Sign up and verify your organization, About Actions and Intro to Branded Mail, read October 10, 2026.
These are upper limits, not typical waits. Google adds that reviews may take longer on rare occasions, and postcard codes usually arrive within 14 days. Apple showcases are reviewed within up to three calendar days.
Reviews and Customer Interaction
Google Business Profile lets a verified owner read and reply to every review, with each reply checked against Google's content policies before it is posted. Apple's Apple Business guide, checked October 9, 2026, contains no topic on replying to Apple Maps ratings or reviews, so a business has no documented way to respond to them there.
Google says replies “usually take up to 10 minutes to review, but sometimes a review can take up to 30 days”, and that the reviewer is notified (Google, Manage customer reviews). Google also lets eligible profiles add a WhatsApp or text-message chat option in “select regions” (Google, Chat with customers). Asking for reviews is allowed on Google, but incentives and selective requests are not (Tips to get more reviews). On Apple, the only review-related reference we found is “Review management” as one type of partner in the Apple Business Partner API request form (Partner API access); Apple does not describe what such partners can do.
Listing Content: Posts, Showcases, Products and Actions
Google Business Profile supports more content types: posts for updates, offers and events, product and service menus, attributes and photo and video uploads. Apple Business supports showcases, which Apple reviews and which can run for up to 365 days, plus Actions such as Order, Reserve or Menu that link to your site or app, and “Good to Know” attributes.
- Google: posts appear in the Updates or Overview tabs on mobile and “From the owner” on desktop (Create and manage posts); services can be grouped into categories (Manage your services); in-store products can be added “at no charge” through the Local Inventory app (Showcase in-store products). Profiles take one primary category plus “up to 9 more” and a 750-character description (Edit your Business Profile).
- Apple: showcases need Apple's approval, so Apple advises planning “at least three calendar days” ahead (Create your first showcase). Actions also need approval, which “can take up to three business days”, and need iOS 17.4 or later to appear (About Actions). Locations take one primary category and “up to 19 optional categories” (Configure location attributes). Each location can hold 100 photos, and Apple's standards rule out “Any AI-generated content” (Photo and text standards).
Apple also edits place cards itself: when Maps users report a problem, “Apple reviews these reports and edits your place card”, then emails administrators (Maintain location information accuracy).
Insights and Analytics
Google's performance report shows the search terms people used to find a profile, along with views, calls, website clicks, direction requests and messages, and can be linked to Google Analytics 4. Apple Business Insights shows search taps by search type, place card views and actions, a heat map of where searchers were, and comparisons with similar locations, hiding counts below a privacy threshold.
| Metric area | Google Business Profile | Apple Business |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery | Views on Search and Maps (unique people per day); search terms, updated monthly | Search taps; search type (name or brand, category, other); heat map and top ZIP codes of searchers |
| Actions | Calls, website clicks, direction requests, messages and other interactions | Directions, Website, Call, Share, Photos, Showcase and brand Actions |
| Benchmarks | Not documented | Similar Locations comparisons, if reporting thresholds are met |
| Privacy limits | Only metrics that apply to your business appear | Counts below a reporting threshold show as zero |
| Export | Download performance for one or many profiles as a spreadsheet | Downloadable reports; monthly Insight recap |
| Includes ads? | Yes: performance data includes organic results and Google Ads | Ads have a separate campaign report (impressions, taps, actions, spend) |
| Other integrations | Link to Google Analytics 4; Gemini web app (gradual rollout, not in EEA or UK) | Location Insights report downloadable with campaign data |
Sources: Google, Understand your Business Profile performance, Connect your Business Profile to Google Analytics, Manage your Business Profile with Gemini; Apple, Use insights for a single location and Reporting options and metric definitions. Google notes that its views metric counts a person once a day; Apple notes insights are unavailable “for up to one hour” after verification. To tell the two listings apart in your own analytics, tag each listing's website link with UTM parameters, as described in how to track links with UTM parameters.
Brand Display Beyond Maps
Apple Business extends a verified brand beyond Apple Maps: Branded Mail puts a company's logo and name on its emails in the Mail app and iCloud Mail, and Tap to Pay on iPhone can show the brand on the payment screen. Google Business Profile is a Search and Maps listing; Google's pages we read describe no equivalent for email or payments.
Apple says Branded Mail requires that “your organization needs to own the brand”, uses commercial email domains only (not addresses such as gmail.com or icloud.com), and that review “can take up to seven business days”; customers see the brand on iPhone in seven languages and in iCloud Mail on the web (Intro to Branded Mail). Tap to Pay branding links your verified brand to the merchant IDs registered with your payment provider (Display your brand during payment). Apple's March announcement also lists brand display in Wallet for tracked orders (Apple Newsroom).
Advertising on Maps
Both companies now sell ads tied to the map listing. Google lets a verified business start a Google Ads campaign from the Google Maps app that can also run on Search, Display and YouTube. Apple added ads on Maps to its Apple Business guide on August 14, 2026, for the U.S. and Canada, priced per customer tap against a monthly budget maximum.
- Google: “Service area businesses and businesses in sensitive categories aren't eligible” for the Maps-app ad flow, and Google recommends a daily budget (Advertise your business on Google).
- Apple: ads appear “at the top of Suggested Places, or at the top of relevant search results”, with placement chosen automatically; you can add up to three images or a logo, and ads cannot promote home services such as plumbing, locksmiths, HVAC or roofing (Create ads). Only advertisers with business locations and an organization address in the U.S. or Canada can run them (Promote your business on Apple Maps).
Advertising sits apart from the free listing on both. Neither company says that buying ads changes organic placement.
Multiple Locations, Agencies and APIs
Google Business Profile and Apple Business both support chains and agencies. Google offers Business Profile Manager for bulk edits and Business Profile APIs that need a Google Cloud project and a legitimate business purpose. Apple added bulk upload of up to 10,000 locations per file on October 8, 2026, and grants its partner API only after reviewing a request.
- Google: owners and managers are added under People and access (Manage owners and managers); API access “requires a valid Google account, a legitimate business purpose, a Google Cloud project, and a business website URL” (Business Profile APIs overview).
- Apple: a TSV template can add or update locations across brands, with a 10,000-row limit per file (Add multiple locations; release notes). Partners get access by OAuth or a Partner Organization ID (Share access with a third-party partner). API access starts with Request API Access under Settings > Integrations > API, and “Apple will review the request” (Partner API access).
Where Google Business Profile Wins
- Review replies: owners can respond to every review.
- Content types: posts, offers, events, products, services and chat.
- Search terms: the performance report shows what people searched.
- Analytics link: direct connection to Google Analytics 4.
- Messaging: a WhatsApp or text-message chat option for eligible profiles in select regions.
Where Apple Business Wins
- Brand reach: Maps, Siri, Wallet, Spotlight, Branded Mail and Tap to Pay on iPhone.
- Location insights: heat maps of searchers and comparisons with similar locations.
- Categories: up to 19 optional categories, against Google's 9 additional.
- Actions: category-specific buttons such as Order, Reserve or Menu on the place card.
- Verification choice: documented methods you can pick from, rather than methods assigned to you.
Who Should Choose Google Business Profile?
Choose Google Business Profile if: you meet customers in person and want to answer reviews, post offers and events, list products or services and see the search terms that lead to your listing.
Avoid relying on Google Business Profile alone if: many of your customers use iPhones and Apple Maps, or you want your brand shown in Mail and at payment.
Best for: any eligible local business, as the first listing to claim.
Starting price: free; ads extra (checked October 2026).
Primary strength: the widest set of documented listing tools, including review replies.
Main limitation: online-only businesses are not eligible.
Verdict: the listing to claim first.
Who Should Choose Apple Business?
Choose Apple Business if: you want control of your Apple Maps place card, branded email and Tap to Pay display, or location-level heat maps of how people find you.
Avoid relying on Apple Business alone if: you need to reply to reviews, publish frequent posts, or advertise a home-services business on maps.
Best for: businesses with physical locations whose customers use iPhones.
Starting price: free; ads on Maps and iCloud or AppleCare+ extras are paid (checked October 2026).
Primary strength: brand display across Apple apps and detailed location insights.
Main limitation: no documented way to respond to ratings or reviews.
Verdict: the second listing to claim, and worth the hour it takes.
How to Choose Between Google Business Profile and Apple Business
| If you need... | Choose |
|---|---|
| Replies to customer reviews | Google Business Profile |
| Posts about offers and events on your listing | Google Business Profile (Apple: showcases, reviewed by Apple) |
| Your logo in customers' Mail app and on the Tap to Pay screen | Apple Business |
| To see where searchers were when they found you | Apple Business (heat map) |
| To see the search terms people used | Google Business Profile |
| A listing for an online-only business | Neither for a local listing; Google may offer a brand profile to select e-commerce retailers |
| To manage hundreds of locations | Either: Business Profile Manager or Apple's 10,000-row template |
| To advertise a plumbing or HVAC business on maps | Not Apple, which bars home-services ads; on Google, service-area businesses can't use the Maps-app ad flow, so check Google Ads eligibility |
| Free coverage on both iPhone and Google | Both, with identical name, address, phone and hours |
Whatever you choose, use the same business name, address, phone, hours and website on both listings, on your site and in your Organization schema markup.
Final Verdict: Google Business Profile or Apple Business?
For a local business, the answer is both, in this order: Google Business Profile first, because Google documents more ways to manage the listing, including review replies, posts, products and search-term reporting; Apple Business second, because it is free, migrated any Business Connect claims automatically and puts your brand in Apple Maps, Siri, Wallet, Mail and the Tap to Pay screen. The choice only becomes either-or in three cases: an online-only business, which Google excludes; a home-services business that wants map ads, which Apple excludes; and a team with time for one listing, which should start with Google. Neither listing guarantees placement in search or AI answers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Apple Business Connect the same as Apple Business?
Apple Business replaced it. Apple announced Apple Business on March 24, 2026 and launched it on April 14, 2026, saying Business Connect, Business Manager and Business Essentials would no longer be available. Claimed locations, place card information and photos migrated automatically, and the old Business Connect guide now says it is Apple Business.
Do I need both a Google Business Profile and Apple Business?
If customers find you in both Google and Apple Maps, yes. The two are separate systems run by different companies; neither documents importing the other's data, so claiming one does nothing for the other. Both are free, and both use the same core details: name, address, phone, hours, category and website.
Are Google Business Profile and Apple Business free?
Yes. Google says you can manage how your business appears on Maps and Search at no charge. Apple calls Apple Business a free service in the U.S. and 200+ countries and regions. Advertising is paid on both, and Apple sells optional extras such as iCloud storage and AppleCare+ for Business.
Can an online-only business use either one?
Not Google Business Profile. Google requires in-person contact with customers during stated hours and lists online-only businesses as ineligible, pointing some e-commerce retailers to a separate brand profile instead. Apple's pages we read describe locations with addresses and map pins and do not state an equivalent rule, so check before relying on it.
Can I reply to reviews on Apple Maps like on Google?
Not according to the documentation. Google lets a verified owner reply to each review, and replies are checked against Google's content policies. Apple's Apple Business guide has no topic on replying to ratings or reviews as of October 2026; its partner API request form lists review management only as a category of partner.
How long does verification take on each?
Google says to wait up to 5 business days after completing the verification steps, and postcard codes usually arrive within 14 days. Apple says organization verification needs two methods and can take up to five business days, and you have 60 days after sign-up to verify before the organization is deleted.
Can I advertise on Apple Maps now?
Yes, in the United States (excluding American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands) and Canada. Apple announced ads on Maps for summer 2026 and added them to its Apple Business guide on August 14, 2026. Advertisers need business locations and an organization address in those countries; they set a monthly budget maximum and pay per tap, and some organizations may get a one-time $150 credit. Ads cannot promote home services such as plumbing or HVAC.
Which gives better analytics?
They measure different things. Google reports views, the search terms people used, calls, website clicks, direction requests and messages, and links to Google Analytics. Apple reports search taps by search type, place card views, actions, heat maps of where searchers were and comparisons with similar locations, with low counts hidden for privacy.
Does completing either profile improve my ranking?
Google says complete, accurate information makes a business more likely to show in local results, and that local results are “mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity”; it also says you cannot pay for a better ranking. Apple documents no ranking factors. Neither company guarantees placement.
How We Compared Google Business Profile and Apple Business
Criteria: cost, eligibility, verification, reviews, listing content, insights, brand display, advertising, multi-location tools and APIs. Dates: all pages were read on October 9, 2026. Sources: the Google Business Profile Help Center, Google's Business Profile API documentation, the Apple Business User Guide (including its release notes) and Apple's March 24, 2026 newsroom announcement. We did not create accounts, claim or verify a listing, or run ads for this comparison.
Limitations: we compare what each company documents, not how often each listing is seen; neither company publishes comparable audience figures for its maps, so we make no claim about which reaches more customers. “Not documented” means we did not find the feature in the pages listed, not that it cannot exist. Both help centers change often, and some Google features are limited to certain regions or categories.
