How to Get on the Inc. 5000 List: Eligibility, Application, Revenue Verification and Deadlines

To get on the Inc. 5000, a company applies, pays a processing fee and verifies revenue; the 2026 list required $2 million in 2025 revenue, and applications closed May 1, 2026. Inc. ranks applicants by percentage revenue growth over three years and reserves the right to exclude companies on editorial grounds. The 2026 list is now published on Inc.com, and Inc. says 2027 applications open in January 2027. Inc. does not publish its fee amounts on the pages we read, and the fee is nonrefundable. This guide covers the 2026 rules, each step, the verification documents and how to describe a listing honestly.

What Is the Inc. 5000?

The Inc. 5000 is Inc.'s annual ranking of the fastest-growing private U.S. companies, built from applications and ordered by percentage revenue growth over three years. Inc. introduced the Inc. 500 in 1982 and expanded it to the Inc. 5000 in 2007. All 5,000 honorees get a profile on Inc.com, and the top 500 are featured in Inc.'s fall print issue. Inc. calls the list "a distinguished editorial award" and "an effective public relations showcase" (Inc. Help Center).

Companies are not picked from a field by editors. They apply, pay a fee and document revenue, and the growth rate decides the rank, subject to an editorial review. That is a different method from editor-chosen lists; Who Picks the Companies on Forbes, TIME and Fortune Lists? compares them. Where the 2026 cycle stands on October 19, 2026: applications are closed, the 2026 list is live on Inc.com (Inc.), and the next window opens in January 2027.

Time: an application window that ran from early 2026 to May 1, 2026, then notification in late June and publication in August. Tools: tax returns or audited financial statements for two years, and a credentialed co-signer if you use the signed verification form. Cost: a nonrefundable processing fee whose amount Inc. does not publish on the pages we read; logo licenses and print copies are sold separately. Skill level: finance lead or owner, with an outside accountant.

What Do You Need Before Starting?

You need a company that fits the year's definition, two years of revenue figures you can document, and a decision maker who accepts that the fee is nonrefundable. For 2026, Inc. required that a company "Have generated revenue by March 31, 2022," have at least $100,000 in 2022 revenue and at least $2 million in 2025 revenue, and "Be privately held, for profit; based in the U.S., and independent (not a subsidiary or division of another company)" (Inc.). Its help center adds that "revenue must be under one LLC" and that "Common paymasters are not eligible," and that "Public companies are not eligible" (Inc. Help Center; Inc. Help Center).

Company structure does not matter: a business that was a partnership in 2022 and is now a corporation "may still be eligible, as long as the business is independent" (Inc. Help Center). An agency can apply for clients: Inc. says "representing firms (PR firms, accounting firms, etc.) may submit applications on behalf of one or more clients," and recommends a separate account per client (Inc. Help Center).

Step 1: Check Whether Your Company Is Eligible

Compare your own figures with the thresholds Inc. publishes for the cycle, and confirm that your latest-year revenue is higher than your base-year revenue. For the 2026 list, the base year was 2022 and the latest year 2025.

Inc. 5000 (2026): minimum 2025 revenue

Inc. 5000 (2026): minimum 2022 revenue
$100,000

Source: Inc., "2026 Inc. 5000" applications page; Inc. 5000 submission site. Read October 19, 2026.

These are the 2026 thresholds. Inc. had not published 2027 thresholds on the pages we read. Revenue is Inc.'s definition: gross revenue less returns and allowances, the Box 1c figure on a corporate tax return.

The chart shows that the 2026 floor for the latest year was 20 times the base-year floor, but rank depends on growth rate, not size.

Growth must be positive. Inc. says year-to-year dips are acceptable, but "your company must be reporting higher revenue numbers in 2025 than in 2022 to be considered," and a lower 2025 figure "will produce a negative growth rate and will be automatically disqualified" (Inc. Help Center). Profit does not matter: "The Inc. 5000 is determined solely by revenue growth; profitability is not a consideration" (Inc. Help Center).

Expect the 2027 cycle to move each year forward by one; that is our inference from the pattern, not an Inc. statement, so check the 2027 rules when they are posted. Inc.'s applications page also promotes separate Inc. Regionals lists, saying "Companies that made at least $1 million in 2024 can apply" (Inc.); those lists have their own application, and this guide does not cover them.

Step 2: Pull Your Revenue Figures the Way Inc. Defines Them

Use Inc.'s definition, not your management-accounts figure. Inc. "defines revenue as gross revenue, less returns, and allowances, before any cost of goods sold," which it says is "the same figure that you enter in Box 1c of your corporate income tax return." Figures should be "rounded no more than to the nearest thousand." If your 2025 figure is not final when you apply, "you may enter an estimate and give the precise figure when you submit your verification materials" (Inc. Help Center).

Our recommendation, not an Inc. rule: have whoever will co-sign or prepare the verification check both figures before you apply. A mismatch between the application and the documents is the avoidable failure.

Step 3: Apply Before the Preferred-Rate Deadline

Apply early, because the fee rises after the first deadline and is not refunded. For 2026, Inc. listed a Preferred-Rate Deadline of March 20, 2026 and an Extended Deadline of May 1, 2026, "Last chance to submit your application" (Inc.). Inc. describes the form as one that "should only take a few minutes."

Inc. does not print the fee amounts on the pages we read. Its help center calls the charge a "processing fee" that "covers only a portion of the operational costs," advises "applying before the Early-Rate deadline to secure the lowest price," and states "All sales are final and nonrefundable" (Inc. Help Center). Third-party sites publish fee tiers and other dates; we could not confirm them on Inc.'s own pages, so we do not repeat them. Ask Inc. at inc5000@inc.com for the current schedule before you start.

Step 4: Submit Revenue Verification

Verification is the second, mandatory step: "If you do not complete Step 2: Revenue Verification, your application will be considered incomplete and will be disqualified" (Inc. Help Center). After payment, the system sends a link to the electronic verification form, which Inc. says it prefers (Inc. Help Center).

Verification optionWhat Inc. requires
Digital signature verificationElectronic signatures from the CEO and a co-signer who is a U.S. certified public accountant, chartered financial analyst, certified management accountant, IRS enrolled agent or attorney
Revenue verification form (PDF)Same signers; company name, revenue to the dollar or nearest $1,000, legible signatures, co-signer credentials listed
Redacted tax returns for 2022 and 2025First two pages and company address; figures below Line 1c (Form 1120/1065) or Part I, Line 3 (Schedule C) may be redacted
Audited financial statementsAccounting opinion letter and income statement from statements audited, reviewed or compiled by an independent accounting firm

Source: Inc. Help Center. Inc. adds that its editorial team may request tax returns or audited statements on top of a signed form, and a company that does not provide them risks disqualification. It will not accept "general profit and loss or internal balance forms."

Decide before you submit: "You may withdraw at any time before you submit revenue verification. After that, you may no longer withdraw from consideration" (Inc. Help Center).

Step 5: Answer Editorial Follow-Up

Expect Inc.'s editors to vet the company after verification. Inc. says its editorial team "may need to contact you to ask follow-up questions" and "reserves the right to exclude companies based on editorial discretion" (Inc. Help Center). The 2026 list page says "All honorees must pass Inc.'s editorial review" (Inc.). Respond quickly and consistently; a qualifying growth rate alone does not secure a place.

Step 6: Wait for Notification and Publication

For 2026, Inc. scheduled honoree notification by email for late June 2026 and publication on Inc.com for mid-August 2026 (Inc.). Inc. says CEOs of honoree companies also "receive packets by mail informing them of their Inc. 5000 rank," and that the print issue profiling the top 500 follows the online list (Inc. Help Center).

The 2026 list is now live. Inc.'s methodology page for it reports a median three-year growth rate of 130 percent for honorees and a top company, Main Street Health, at 546,533 percent (Inc.).

How Do You Verify It Worked?

Find your company on Inc.'s published list on Inc.com and check the honoree profile. Inc. says the profile shows the company's rank, leadership names, three-year growth rate, industry, location, year founded and number of employees; revenue figures are no longer published for every company (Inc. Help Center). A confirmation email is not publication. Quote the rank, list year and growth figure exactly as Inc. prints them.

What Not to Do

Do not market an application as an award. Consequence: the claim is false until Inc. confirms and publishes. Correction: wait for the notification and the published list.

Do not submit verification before you are sure. Consequence: you cannot withdraw afterward, and the fee is nonrefundable. Correction: decide first, then verify.

Do not present the listing as journalist-selected coverage. Consequence: readers who learn that companies apply and pay a fee may discount the claim. Correction: say "named to the 2026 Inc. 5000" with the rank, and let the methodology speak; see What Do Business Awards Cost, and Do They Mean Anything?

Do not use Inc.'s logo without a license. Consequence: a rights problem. Correction: Inc. says logo licenses and commemorative issues are sold through the Inc. Store (Inc. Help Center).

Do not promise your board a ranking. Consequence: eligibility does not guarantee a place, because Inc. can exclude companies on editorial grounds. Correction: describe it as an application with no result assured.

How Should You Describe a Listing?

State the list name, the year and, if you cite them, the rank and growth percentage as Inc. printed them. Inc. says the listing can bring "potential editorial coverage in Inc. magazine" (Inc.); treat that as possible, not promised. No source we read shows that a listing changes search rankings or AI answers about a company, so do not claim it does. Sources and Methodology

This guide is built from Inc.'s own pages, read October 19, 2026: the 2026 applications page, the submission site, the 2027 notification page, the 2026 list and methodology pages, and the Inc. 5000 section of Inc.'s help center (articles last updated May 4 to June 30, 2026). www.inc.com returned 403 to automated fetches and was read in a Chrome browser; the help-center articles were read through its public article feed. Eligibility, dates and verification rules are the 2026 cycle's; 2027 terms were not published. One help-center article ("How are the 2026 Inc. 5000 companies selected?") gives "December 31, 2022" and "2021" where every other Inc. page gives December 31, 2025 and 2022; we follow the majority. Fee tiers and dates found on third-party sites were not used because Inc.'s pages did not confirm them. House advice is labeled as ours.
