What Is a Crunchbase Company Profile?
A Crunchbase company profile is a public page in Crunchbase's database that lists a company's description, location, industries, founders, team, funding rounds, investors and news.
Crunchbase describes itself in its help center as “the leading database of technology companies, people, and investors” and says investors, customers, potential employees and partners “may research your company before contacting you” (Crunchbase). Profiles are edited by users and moderated by Crunchbase; they are not owned by any one account. Crunchbase's editing help article says profiles “are not exclusively linked to a single user or login” (Crunchbase).
Two things a profile is not. It is not a reliable source for Wikipedia: a 2019 discussion deprecated Crunchbase, noting that “a significant proportion of Crunchbase's data is user-generated content” (Wikipedia; see our explainer on Wikipedia's perennial sources). And Google does not document Crunchbase as an input to knowledge panels. Its practical value is as a consistent, linkable record of the company that you can reference from your own Organization schema and from Wikidata, which has a dedicated “Crunchbase organization ID” property (Wikidata P2088).
How to Get Your Company on Crunchbase at a Glance
| Step | Action | Expected result |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Check the company fits and search for an existing profile | You know whether to create or claim |
| 2 | Register a free account with your company email | A Crunchbase user account on the company domain |
| 3 | Connect LinkedIn or Google (social authentication) | Your account can add and edit profiles |
| 4 | Create the company profile if none exists | A new profile saved with Save All Edits |
| 5 | Verify your employment through Manage My Company | Exclusive edit rights to the Overview section |
| 6 | Complete the overview, description, team and funding | A profile that follows Crunchbase's content guidelines |
| 7 | Add news and keep the profile current | Press references on the profile; data reviewed regularly |
Time: about an hour for a complete profile if the facts are ready (our estimate). Tools: a browser, a company email inbox, a LinkedIn or Google account. Cost: none for creating or editing a profile. Skill level: beginner.
What You Need Before Starting
- An email address on the company's own domain that you can receive mail at. Verification requires the domains to match.
- A LinkedIn or Google account to connect. Crunchbase says one social account can be associated with only one Crunchbase user account (Crunchbase).
- The company's logo, website, social links, founded date, headquarters city and country, and a short and long description.
- Founders and key team members, and details of any closed funding rounds: type, announcement date, amount, investors and a press link.
- Links to independent news coverage of the company.
Step 1: Check the Company Fits and Search for an Existing Profile
Search Crunchbase for the company name and website before creating anything, and check that the company is the kind Crunchbase lists.
Why: Crunchbase asks contributors to ensure a profile “isn't already in Crunchbase” before adding one (Crunchbase), and its moderation removes profiles that do not fit. Its stated targets are early-stage funded startups, investors, growth startups, pre-funding startups, technology companies and other high-profile companies. Its moderation flags include small businesses such as “spa, dentistry, pest control, home repair, landscaping”, “promotional-based profiles that are purely advertisements”, URL shorteners and profiles written entirely in a language other than English (Crunchbase).
Expected result: a decision: create (Step 4) or claim (Step 5). Common mistake: creating a duplicate because the existing profile uses an older company name. Search by website as well as name.
Step 2: Register a Free Account With Your Company Email
Register for a Crunchbase account using an email address on your company's domain.
Process: Crunchbase says to click Log In on the homepage and select the Register tab; you can register with email, name and password, or through Google or LinkedIn (Crunchbase, Requirements to Create a Profile Page). Why the company email: to verify employment later, Crunchbase says you must be logged in with your company email address and “the email domain of your Crunchbase account will need to match that of your company’s” (Crunchbase). Expected result: a logged-in account. Common mistake: registering with a personal Gmail address, which then cannot verify.
Step 3: Connect LinkedIn or Google (Social Authentication)
Link a LinkedIn or Google account to your Crunchbase account so you can add and edit profiles.
Process: click the Account icon at the top right, choose Account Settings, scroll to the Social Authentication section and click Connect for the network you choose (Crunchbase). Crunchbase says the requirement exists “to both verify the identity of our users and maintain the quality of our dataset” (Crunchbase). Expected result: the network shows as connected. How to verify: open any profile and check that Edit is available under Actions. Common mistake: connecting a social account already tied to another Crunchbase user; Crunchbase allows one association per social account. If you are still asked to authenticate after connecting, Crunchbase says to email support with your login email (Crunchbase).
Step 4: Create the Company Profile if None Exists
Create a new company profile from the Resources menu if Step 1 found nothing.
Process from Crunchbase's How do I create a Crunchbase profile?: click Resources in the top navigation, then Create Profile; select the type of profile; enter the details; then click Save All Edits in the upper right corner. Later edits are made through Actions, then Edit. Expected result: a public profile URL. How to verify: open the profile while logged out. Common mistake: leaving without clicking Save All Edits; Crunchbase's troubleshooting article names this as the first thing to check when edits do not appear (Crunchbase). If saving fails, Crunchbase says special characters in the description are a common cause (Crunchbase).
Step 5: Verify Your Employment Through Manage My Company
Verify that you work at the company so that you and other verified employees control the Overview section.
Process from How do I verify my account?: while logged in with your company email, click the account icon, select Manage My Company, search for and select your company, enter your company email address and click Next, then click the link in the verification email. Crunchbase says that once verified, “you and other verified employees will have the exclusive ability to edit the Overview section”. Its editing requirements add that a lock icon next to a field means only verified employees can edit it.
Expected result: verified status and locked Overview fields. If the domain does not match (for example, the company uses a different email domain from its website), Crunchbase asks you to email support with your company email, your Crunchbase login email and the profile URL (Crunchbase). Common mistake: an agency verifying on the client's behalf with an agency address; verification is tied to the company domain.
Step 6: Complete the Overview, Description, Team and Funding
Fill in every field you can verify, following Crunchbase's own content guidelines.
What Crunchbase lists as key items for a complete company profile: logo, founded date, website and social links, short and long description, headquarters, industries (3–5 recommended), Diversity Spotlight (US, UK and Europe only), founders, funding rounds, and employees, board members and advisors (Crunchbase).
How to write it, from Crunchbase's best practices:
- Descriptions in the third person (“company x”, not “our company”), with the long description opening on a one-sentence summary.
- No marketing language such as “best” or “most comprehensive”, and no words that date, such as “new”; write “launched April 2008” instead.
- Headquarters: if you do not give a street address, the city and country are what is displayed, and they are often used in Crunchbase Pro searches.
- A general contact email such as info@ rather than a personal one.
- Only closed funding rounds, ideally with amount, date, investors and a press reference.
Process for specific sections: to add a round, open Actions, Edit, scroll to Funding Rounds and click Create New Funding Round; Funding Type and Announcement Date are the minimum (Crunchbase). To add a person, use Create New Position in the Employees, Board Members, and Advisors section (Crunchbase). To change the logo, click the image in the Overview section and choose Select A New Photo (Crunchbase). Save All Edits each time.
The content rules in Crunchbase's guidelines: content must be accurate and objective, provide unique information, and “cannot be used as a marketing tool to sell a product or service.” Common mistake: pasting the homepage marketing copy into the description. Use the same factual wording as your media bios and boilerplate.
Step 7: Add News and Keep the Profile Current
Add independent coverage as press references, then review the profile whenever something material changes.
Process: in Edit, scroll to News, choose Create New Press Reference, paste the article URL, let the news engine fill the details, click Add Press Reference, then Continue and Save All Edits (Crunchbase). Crunchbase's news system does not accept PDFs, Word documents, video or podcast links, company blog links, paywalled articles or articles without a publish date; if you see the message that a URL “does not meet our approved list of domains”, the article is not compatible (Crunchbase).
Data you cannot edit directly: Insights, Predictions, CB Rank and CB Trend. For Predictions and Insights, Crunchbase says to update funding and headcount first, then use the thumbs-down feedback form with supporting public URLs; its data team reviews requests “within 7 business days” (Crunchbase). Expected result: a profile with dated, independent news. Common mistake: adding only the company's own blog posts, which the system rejects.
Classification from Crunchbase Knowledge Center articles, not a measurement
Source: Crunchbase Knowledge Center, How do I create a Crunchbase profile?, What information can I remove from a profile? and How do I verify my account?
Bars rank how much a non-staff user can change each group; they are ordinal categories, not measured quantities. Inaccuracies in locked fields go to support@crunchbase.com.
How to Verify It Worked
- Public profile: the company URL on crunchbase.com loads while logged out and shows your edits. Crunchbase says edits “can typically be viewed instantly”, and some how-to articles note they may take a few minutes.
- Verification: the Overview fields show the lock that means only verified employees can edit them.
- No moderation removal: the profile is still live a few days later. If it disappears, see the problems table.
- Linked identity: add the Crunchbase URL to your Organization schema
sameAsand, if your company has a Wikidata item, to the Crunchbase organization ID property (see how to create a Wikidata item).
How to Choose What to Do
| Situation | Recommended action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| No profile exists, company fits Crunchbase's focus | Create it (Step 4), then verify (Step 5) | Verification locks the Overview to verified staff |
| Profile exists and is broadly right | Verify, then complete | Claiming is employment verification, not a separate request |
| Profile has wrong founders, rounds or acquisitions | Email support with the URL, the data and why | Users cannot delete those fields |
| Local service business (dentist, landscaper, spa) | Skip Crunchbase; use Google Business Profile | Crunchbase lists these among moderation flags |
| Goal is a Wikipedia article | Build independent coverage instead | Wikipedia treats Crunchbase as deprecated |
For local businesses, how to set up a Google Business Profile is the better starting point.
Common Problems and Fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Profile removed | Hit a moderation flag | If you think it is a mistake, email support@crunchbase.com with the former profile link |
| Cannot edit any profile | Social authentication missing | Connect LinkedIn or Google in Account Settings |
| Verification rejected | Account email domain differs from the company's | Register with a company address, or email support with the details Crunchbase lists |
| Error on save | Special characters in the description | Remove them and save again; then contact support |
| Edits not showing | Save All Edits not clicked | Redo and save; if still missing after 24 hours, email support |
| “Approved list of domains” message on news | Blog, PDF, paywalled or undated link | Use an independent, dated, accessible article |
| Wrong funding or founder cannot be removed | Field restricted to staff | Email support with profile URL, the data and an explanation |
What Not to Do
- Do not write the profile as an advert. Consequence: Crunchbase flags “purely advertisements”. Correction: factual, third-person text.
- Do not create a second profile to escape an old one. Consequence: duplicates and moderation. Correction: claim and correct the existing one; Crunchbase's policy is to correct problematic profiles rather than remove them.
- Do not add rounds that have not closed. Consequence: Crunchbase says it tracks only closed rounds, and rounds feed the Total Funding Amount. Correction: add the round when it closes.
- Do not cite your Crunchbase profile on Wikipedia. Consequence: the citation is likely to be reverted as a deprecated source. Correction: cite independent coverage.
- Do not expect a search ranking or knowledge panel from it. Consequence: misplaced effort. Correction: treat it as one consistent identity record among several (see how to claim your knowledge panel).
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it cost anything to put my company on Crunchbase?
No. Crunchbase says creating and editing a company profile is available to registered users at no cost. Its help center describes creating, verifying and editing a profile without any paid subscription.
How do I claim my company's existing Crunchbase profile?
Verify your employment. Log in with an email address on the company's domain, choose Manage My Company from the account menu, select the company, enter your company email and click the link Crunchbase sends. Verified employees can then exclusively edit the Overview section.
Who can edit my company's Crunchbase profile?
Any registered user who has connected LinkedIn or Google can edit profiles. Once your company has verified employees, Overview fields marked with a lock can be edited only by them. Some fields, such as founders and funding rounds, can be deleted only by Crunchbase staff.
Can I delete my company's Crunchbase profile?
Generally not. Crunchbase's guidelines say its policy is to correct problematic profiles rather than remove them, and closed companies are marked closed rather than deleted. It does remove profiles it finds entirely fictitious.
Why was my company's Crunchbase profile removed?
Crunchbase says removed profiles have usually hit a moderation flag, such as being a small local business, a purely promotional profile or written entirely in a language other than English. If you think it was a mistake, email support with a link to the former profile.
How long does it take for a Crunchbase profile or edit to appear?
Crunchbase says edits can typically be viewed instantly after you click Save All Edits, and some of its how-to articles say they may take a few minutes. If an edit has not appeared after 24 hours, it asks you to email support.
Does a Crunchbase profile help with Google or a knowledge panel?
Google does not document Crunchbase as a knowledge panel source. A profile is useful as a consistent record you can link from your own Organization schema sameAs and from Wikidata's Crunchbase organization ID property.
Can a PR agency set up our Crunchbase profile?
An agency can create and edit a profile from its own authenticated account. Verification, which locks the Overview section, requires an email address on the company's own domain, so someone at the company should complete that step.
Can I change our CB Rank or Predictions on Crunchbase?
Not directly. Crunchbase lists Insights, Predictions, CB Rank and CB Trend as not editable. For Predictions and Insights, it suggests updating funding and headcount, then using the feedback form; its data team reviews requests within 7 business days.
Sources and Methodology
This guide is built from Crunchbase's Knowledge Center articles on creating, verifying and editing profiles, read in a browser on October 9, 2026 (the help center blocks simple automated requests). We also read English Wikipedia's perennial sources list and Wikidata's property P2088. Menu and button names are quoted from Crunchbase's own help articles; some of those articles were last updated a year or more ago, and the live interface may differ. We did not create, verify or edit a Crunchbase profile for this guide, and Crunchbase does not publish a review time for new company profiles. The time estimate is ours.
