How to Set Up a Publication in Google News Publisher Center: What Still Works in 2026

You cannot submit a site to Google News through Publisher Center any more. Google stopped new Google News publication setups there on April 25, 2024, and since late March 2025 generates publication pages automatically, ignoring submitted RSS feeds, web locations and sections. Policy-compliant content is considered automatically. To set up a publication for what Publisher Center still does (Reader Revenue Manager, News Showcase, users, settings), you need a site verified in Google Search Console. There are eight steps. Key warning: no Publisher Center setting gets you into Google News or improves ranking.

  • Inclusion in Google News is algorithmic. Google says it “automatically considers all web content for inclusion in Google News, so you don't need to apply” (Publisher Center overview).
  • Google says that since April 25, 2024 “publishers can no longer set up Google News publications in Publisher Center” (announcement). Since late March 2025, Google News “will no longer use RSS feeds or web locations” submitted there, and custom sections no longer appear (announcement).
  • Google News now takes your publication title from your site name and your logo from your favicon, not from Publisher Center.
  • Publisher Center's current job, in Google's words, is to help publishers “configure monetization solutions through Reader Revenue Manager and manage their Google News Showcase settings”.
  • Eligibility depends on Google News content policies, including transparency: clear dates and bylines, author and publisher information, and contact details.

What Is Google News Publisher Center?

Google News Publisher Center is Google's account tool for news publishers to manage publication settings, user access, Reader Revenue Manager and Google News Showcase; it is not a submission form for Google News.

Google's Publisher Center overview lists what you can add: basic publication information, headquarters location, “Verification of website property URLs” and contact details. It also says what not to expect: Publisher Center “isn't an authoring tool or a content management system”. An organization is the entity that hosts one or more publications; Google notes that what was once called an “Edition” or “Source” is now a “Publication”.

Many older guides tell you to add RSS feeds, build sections and “submit” for review. That process is gone. The Google News pages that readers follow are now generated automatically, and Google says some publications “may not have an automatically-generated landing page” (Google, February 2025, updated March 2025).

One older help article, Test major changes to your publication, still describes creating content sections from feeds and previewing them in the Google News app's Designer Mode. It conflicts with Google's 2025 announcement, and the articles it links to for feeds, web locations and publishing now redirect to the help center home page. Treat the announcement as current.

Time: under an hour for Steps 5–8 if DNS access is ready (our estimate); policy and transparency work in Steps 1–2 depends on your site. Tools: a Google Account, Google Search Console, DNS or file access for your domain. Cost: Google lists no fee for Publisher Center itself; it says Reader Revenue Manager charges 5% per transaction including card fees. Skill level: beginner to intermediate.

What You Need Before Starting

  • A news site publishing original articles on its own domain.
  • A Google Account. To add other users, Google requires email addresses tied to a managed Google Account such as Google Workspace or Cloud Identity.
  • Access to your domain's DNS records (Google recommends the domain name provider method) or the ability to upload an HTML file to the site.
  • Published editorial information: author bios, an about page, ownership details and a contact page.
  • A clear reason to use Publisher Center: Reader Revenue Manager, News Showcase, or managing an existing publication. If you only want to appear in Google News, Steps 1–4 are the work.

Step 1: Check Your Content Against Google News Policies

Review your site against the Google News policies before anything else. Eligibility for Google News and other news surfaces depends on these policies, not on Publisher Center.

What the policies cover: content must follow article-page best practices and must not violate Google Search's overall policies, its spam policies, or the Search features policies on dangerous, deceptive, harassing, hateful, manipulated, medical, sexually explicit, violent extremist, violent and gory, and vulgar content. Google News adds three of its own:

  • Ads and sponsored content: ads “shouldn't exceed your content”, and sponsorship, “including, but not limited to, ownership or affiliate interest, payment, or material support, should be clearly disclosed”. Our explainer on what Google News requires of sponsored content covers this in detail.
  • Misleading content: previews must not promise details the article does not contain.
  • Transparency: see Step 2.

Google also says publishers must block scraped content and paid or unnatural links from Google News, and recommends blocking republished syndicated content (Content that must be blocked). Expected result: no content that conflicts with the list. How to verify: check Search Console's Manual actions report; Google says News policy violations appear there. Common mistake: running sponsored posts without a clear label. Google says it “may remove the content”, and repeated or egregious violations can make a site ineligible.

Step 2: Publish Dates, Bylines and Publisher Information

Add the transparency information Google lists to every article and to your site's about and contact pages. Google says news sources “should provide”:

  • Clear dates and bylines
  • Information about the authors, publication and publisher
  • Information about the company or network behind the content
  • Contact information

Dates and headlines (Best practices for your article pages): Google says articles “need to show both a clear, visible date and time”, ideally between the headline and the article text, and that artificially refreshing dates without significant new information is “against our guidelines”. Match the HTML <title> to the on-page headline; Google suggests titles of at least 10 characters and between 2 and 22 words. In Article structured data, Google says it may use datePublished, dateModified, headline, image and author.url.

Expected result: a reader can tell who wrote each piece, who owns the site and how to reach it. How to verify: open three recent articles and check each shows a byline, date and time. Common mistake: hiding ownership. Google's manual actions documentation lists concealing ownership, location or relationships with governments or political groups as deceptive practices on news surfaces (Manual actions report).

Step 3: Confirm Google Can Crawl and Index Your Articles

Check that your articles are indexed in Google Search, because Google News finds content through Google's normal crawl. Google says publishers “don't need to submit their site” and that it “algorithmically discovers news content through Search technologies” (Help Google News discover your content).

Process: search site:yourdomain.com to confirm indexing; use the URL Inspection tool in Search Console for individual articles and the Page indexing report for the site. Make sure robots.txt and meta tags do not block Googlebot-News; Google says blocking it “excludes your content from Google News” while leaving Search unaffected (Block access to content, News content across Google).

<!-- This removes an article from Google News. Do not leave it on by mistake. -->
<meta name="Googlebot-News" content="noindex, nofollow">

Optional: a Google News sitemap can help Google find articles faster. Google's news sitemap guidelines say to include only articles created in the last two days and up to 1,000 <news:news> entries per sitemap; you submit it in Search Console like any sitemap (see how to submit a sitemap to Google and Bing). Expected result: recent articles appear in Google Search. Common mistake: redirecting visitors automatically by language, which Google's discovery page advises against.

Entries allowed in one file: news sitemap vs standard sitemap

Maximum entries per sitemap file, read October 10, 2026

Standard sitemap (URLs)
50,000
Google News sitemap (news:news tags)
1,000

Source: sitemaps.org, Sitemaps XML format; Google Search Central, News sitemaps.

Google also says a news sitemap should list only articles created in the last two days; larger sets are split across several files.

Step 4: Set Your Site Name and Favicon

Define your site name with WebSite structured data on the home page and publish a square favicon. Google says Google News “will use site favicons for publisher logos, and site names for publication titles” (Google), and that names typed into Publisher Center “aren't used for Google News” (Initial setup).

<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "WebSite",
  "name": "Example Daily",
  "alternateName": "ED",
  "url": "https://www.example.com/"
}
</script>

Rules: the markup must be on the home page at the domain or subdomain root; Google supports one site name per domain or subdomain and none for subdirectories (Site names, updated December 2025). The favicon must be square, at least 8×8px (Google recommends larger than 48×48px), at a stable URL, and crawlable by Googlebot and Googlebot-Image (Favicon, updated August 2026). Expected result: Google Search results show your chosen name and icon, which Google News draws on. Common mistake: trying to change your Google News name or logo in Publisher Center; that control is gone.

Step 5: Verify Your Domain in Google Search Console

Verify ownership of your whole domain in Google Search Console, using the same Google Account you will use for Publisher Center. Google says “to verify your site ownership in Publisher Center, you need to verify your site in Search Console” (Verify your content).

Google's rules for Publisher Center: use the domain name provider method (a DNS record); verify the full site, for example news.example.com rather than news.example.com/news; if news comes from several subdomains, verify the top domain (example.com). If you cannot use DNS, Google says to use HTML file verification. Our step-by-step guide to verifying your site in Google Search Console covers each method.

Expected result: a verified property with you as owner. How to verify: the property opens in Search Console without a verification prompt. Common mistake: verifying with a colleague's account. Google says to sign in to Publisher Center “with the same email account that you used to verify your site in Search Console”.

Step 6: Add the Publication in Publisher Center

Go to publishercenter.google.com, and under More options choose Add another publication, then enter your site's URL. Google's overview describes this option as “Enter a URL to set up another publication.” If you already have one, it may already exist; check the Publication selector at the top right first.

Rules (Initial setup): the publication name you enter is used inside Publisher Center only; Google News uses your site name. You “can only create one publication per website property”. An organization can hold several publications, and organization owners can create, rename and delete organizations (Manage your organization's settings); Google notes the organization name is not visible to Google News users.

Expected result: the publication appears in the Publication selector. How to verify: open Publication selector > Settings and see the Publication settings, Organization settings and User permissions tabs. Common mistake: creating a second publication for a subfolder of the same property, which the one-per-property rule prevents.

Step 7: Verify the Primary Website Property URL

Under More options, click Manage your publication and your organization > Modify publication settings, enter your URL in Primary website property URL under “General”, and click Verify in Search Console.

Details (Verify your content): Google says the “Verify in Search Console” button “only shows up after you add your site's URL”. The primary property can be a domain property (example.com) or a URL-prefix property (https://example.com). Add secondary domains under Additional website property URLs. Google warns it is “unable to guarantee uninterrupted processing of your articles after a domain change”.

Expected result: the property shows as verified in Publication settings. How to verify: reopen Publication settings and check the status. Common mistake: verifying a URL path rather than the full site. If it still fails after following Google's steps, Google points you to its contact form.

Step 8: Add Users and Choose a Product

Add colleagues under More options > Manage your publication and your organization > Manage user permissions for your organization, then click Add user. Only Owners can add users, and each user needs a managed Google Account (Manage your users' access).

Publication roleCreateEditViewDeleteManage Showcase panels
OwnerYesYesYesYesYes
EditorYesYesYesYesYes
Showcase editorNoNoYesNoYes
ViewerNoNoYesNoNo

Google notes that an access level on the organization grants the same level on every publication in it. Then choose a product: Reader Revenue Manager adds subscriptions, contributions, newsletter sign-ups and surveys to your pages (Google says “you must add a publication in Publisher Center” first, and lists supported countries); Google News Showcase is a licensing program in which Google pays participating publishers to curate panels, available in select countries. Expected result: users listed with roles; the product tile available. Common mistake: inviting a personal Gmail address, which Google's requirement rules out.

How to Verify It Worked

  • Publisher Center: the publication appears in the Publication selector and Publication settings show the primary website property as verified.
  • Google News traffic: Search Console's Performance report for Google News shows clicks and impressions from news.google.com and the Google News apps. Google calls it “the best way to determine if you have eligible content that's appearing on Google News”. The News tab in Google Search is reported separately, in the Search performance report with Search type set to News.
  • Analytics: Google says readers from Google News arrive with the referrer news.google.com or news.url.google.com (Measure the impact).
  • Policy status: Search Console's Manual actions report shows no News or Discover policy actions.

An empty Google News report does not mean setup failed. Publisher Center setup is not what puts content into Google News.

What Not to Do

  • Do not follow pre-2024 guides that tell you to submit feeds for review. Consequence: wasted time; Google no longer uses them. Correction: Steps 1–4.
  • Do not pay anyone to “get you into Google News”. Consequence: Google says it does not accept payments to improve ranking and needs no application. Correction: fix policy, transparency and indexing yourself.
  • Do not hide sponsorship. Consequence: content removal, and ineligibility for repeated or egregious violations. Correction: label sponsorship clearly.
  • Do not refresh dates without real updates. Consequence: Google calls this against its guidelines. Correction: change the date only for substantial changes.
  • Do not leave a stray Googlebot-News noindex in a template. Consequence: articles drop out of Google News. Correction: audit templates after redesigns.
  • Do not treat Publisher Center setup as a ranking factor. Consequence: misplaced effort. Correction: Google says having a publication there “does not guarantee its content will appear”.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Publisher Center to appear in Google News?

No. Google says it automatically considers all web content for inclusion in Google News and you do not need to apply. Content must comply with Google News policies and be crawlable. Publisher Center is for publication settings, Reader Revenue Manager and News Showcase.

Can I still submit my site to Google News?

Not through a submission process. Google says publishers could no longer set up Google News publications in Publisher Center from April 25, 2024, and since late March 2025 publication pages in Google News are generated automatically.

Does Google News still use RSS feeds from Publisher Center?

No. Google said that from late March 2025 Google News will no longer use RSS feeds or web locations submitted in Publisher Center, and custom sections created there no longer appear on publication pages.

How do I change my publication name or logo in Google News?

Change your site name and favicon. Google says Google News uses site names for publication titles and favicons for logos, and that names entered in Publisher Center are not used for Google News. Logos for News Showcase and Reader Revenue Manager are still uploaded in Publisher Center.

Why does my publication have no page in Google News?

Google says some publications may not have an automatically generated landing page. Your articles can still appear in Google News; check the Google News performance report in Search Console to see whether they do.

Do I need a Google News sitemap?

It is optional. Google says a News sitemap can help Google News discover articles faster. It should list only articles from the last two days, with up to 1,000 news entries per sitemap.

Can I block Google News without leaving Google Search?

Yes. Google says blocking Googlebot-News in robots.txt or with a Googlebot-News meta tag keeps content out of Google News without affecting indexing and ranking in Google Search.

How does Google rank articles in Google News?

Algorithmically. Google lists relevance, prominence, authoritativeness, freshness, usability, and location and language, and says it does not accept payments to improve ranking. Some sections are personalised by user interests and activity.

Who can add users to a publication in Publisher Center?

Only users with Owner access. Each new user needs an email address associated with a managed Google Account, such as Google Workspace or Google Cloud Identity.
