What Did Vox Media Announce?
On Tuesday, October 13, 2026, Vox Media said that Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kara Swisher and the company had formed “a podcast partnership for the midterms and beyond.” It begins, the release says, with Clinton and Swisher co-hosting “a special midterms-focused limited series, ‘High Stakes,’ that debuts October 14 and will run as a third episode of Swisher’s hit show for New York Magazine, On With Kara Swisher, weekly on Wednesdays” (Vox Media). The topics it names are “the cost of living, to healthcare, to technology.”
The release quotes all three parties. Clinton: “I don’t think the stakes for our country and the world have ever been higher than they are in November.” Swisher: “Think of this series as Pivot, but with an actual expert as my co-host.” Jim Bankoff, Vox Media’s co-founder and chief executive: “She and Kara are forces of nature, and have an undeniable chemistry as hosts. I can’t wait to see where we take this partnership next.”
The trade and political press added details the release leaves out, most of them sourced to The New York Times, whose article we could not open. TheWrap reports that, according to the Times, “the weekly episodes will run through mid-November, with Clinton, Swisher and Vox Media sharing advertising revenue,” and that Clinton told the Times she might continue after the midterms “if it attracts a large enough audience” (TheWrap). The Hill, republished by Yahoo, says the series “will be distributed through the same feed as Swisher’s ‘On’ podcast” and that Clinton is “willing to read her own ads” (The Hill via Yahoo).
What Does the Feed Show?
A podcast’s RSS feed is the public file every app reads, so it shows how a launch was actually done rather than how it was described. We read the On with Kara Swisher feed, hosted on Vox Media’s Megaphone platform, on October 16 (feed).
minutes (from the feed's itunes:duration, rounded to 0.1)
Durations include any ads stitched into the file the feed points to and may vary by listener where ads are inserted dynamically. The chart shows where the new series sits in the feed's schedule, not audience size, which neither Vox nor the reporting has published.
The chart shows that the first “High Stakes” episode, at 56.4 minutes, runs about as long as the regular interviews around it, so the series slots into the show’s format as well as its schedule.
Five details stand out. First, there is no new show: the episode is item 438 in a feed whose first item, “Coming Soon: On with Kara Swisher,” dates from September 3, 2022, and Apple’s directory search returned no separate “High Stakes” listing. Second, the schedule changed and the show’s description did not: of the 30 most recent items, 13 were published on a Monday and 14 on a Thursday, the channel description still reads “Twice a week” and “Mondays and Thursdays,” and the Clinton episode is the only Wednesday. Third, the series is set apart inside the feed. Its title carries the prefix “High Stakes with HRC,” it has its own episode artwork, which none of the three most recent regular episodes carries, and its description opens “Welcome to High Stakes, a limited series from Kara Swisher and the former Secretary of State herself: Hillary Clinton. For the next six weeks...” Six Wednesdays from October 14 runs to November 18, which fits the Times’ “mid-November.”
Fourth, it is measured and monetized like everything else in the feed. The audio URL begins with Podtrac’s redirect (podtrac.com/pts/redirect.mp3) followed by further measurement redirects, the same chain as the show’s other recent episodes, and the description ends, as all 20 of the latest episodes do, with “Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices.” Fifth, it is marked as an ordinary full episode (itunes:episodeType “full”), not a bonus or trailer.
Why Launch Inside an Existing Feed?
Vox has not explained its reasoning, so what follows is our reading of the mechanics, not the company’s strategy. A new episode in an existing feed reaches every app that already follows that feed: followers of On with Kara Swisher received a Clinton episode on Wednesday without doing anything. A new feed starts with no followers, no listening history and no chart position. Because the downloads of every episode in a feed count toward that feed, the series’ audience is also folded into the show’s own numbers in any ranking that measures by feed; how those rankings work is in How Do Podcast Charts Work?, and why download totals need care is in Why Are Download Numbers Misleading?
Podcast News Daily makes the discovery argument explicitly, writing that the arrangement “could help overcome the discovery challenges of her earlier show, ‘You and Me Both,’ which ran from 2020 to 2023” (Podcast News Daily). That is the publication’s judgment; it gives no audience figures for the earlier show, and neither do we. Apple’s directory lists that show under iHeartPodcasts with 64 episodes, the last dated December 12, 2023.
The trade-off runs the other way too. A series inside someone else’s feed has no feed of its own to keep if the partnership ends, and its listeners are counted as the host show’s. The reporting suggests Vox has left room to change that: TheWrap says Vox plans “additional projects featuring Clinton and Swisher,” and Podcast News Daily says the companies have not disclosed their format or timing. A network’s role in decisions like this is covered in What Is a Podcast Network?
How Was the Format Tested?
In public, on another Swisher show. Vox’s release says Clinton “previously served as a guest host of Pivot, Swisher’s podcast with Scott Galloway, during this year’s ‘Scott-free August.’” The Pivot feed shows the episode: “Michigan’s Primary Drama, the DOJ’s Next Boss, and Hillary Clinton Co-Hosts,” published August 7, 2026, described as “the first episode of Scott-Free August” (Pivot feed). The Hill, citing the Times, says that test run followed a meeting at the Washington home of David Bradley, former owner of The Atlantic, and that Bankoff told the paper podcast equipment was sent to Clinton’s home in Chappaqua, New York.
Who Sells the Ads, and Who Reads Them?
The sources agree on the structure and leave out the numbers. TheWrap, citing the Times, says the three parties share advertising revenue; no split is given. The Hill says Clinton noted that “if the series draws a large enough audience,” the podcast could continue, “adding that she is willing to read her own ads.” Podcast News Daily says she “will reportedly do some host-read ads.” Vox’s release names no sponsors, and the first episode’s description names none.
A revenue share, rather than a flat fee, ties the hosts’ income to the ads the series sells, and host-read ads are the format that depends most on the host. Whether this series’ ads are read by the hosts, inserted dynamically, or both is not stated anywhere we read. The mechanics are in What Is Dynamic Ad Insertion? and Do Host-Read Podcast Ads Work Better Than Produced Spots?
What This Means for Anyone Buying a Placement
Our recommendations, not platform rules. First, for a sponsor, an in-feed series is bought through the host show: ask whether a buy covers the Wednesday episodes, the regular ones or both, and ask for episode-level numbers, because the show’s totals will now mix the two. No audience figures have been published for either. Second, the subject is partisan and time-limited. A brand with no stake in the midterms should decide whether that environment suits it before the price comes up; a brand with one should expect its sponsorship to be noticed.
Third, for a guest, the bookings follow the series’ brief. TheWrap reports that Clinton and Swisher “plan to bring on guests with differing viewpoints to debate major issues and identify areas of agreement,” so a pitch has to fit a specific episode theme inside a six-week run, not the host show’s usual interview slot; see How to Pitch Yourself as a Podcast Guest. Fourth, the same model is open to companies on a smaller scale: a limited series published into an established feed, labeled and with its own artwork, borrows an audience that a new feed would take months to build. Any paid appearance inside such a series is advertising and is disclosed as such.
Methodology and Limitations
Four limits apply. First, the feed details are a live read on October 16, 2026 and can change; feeds are edited after publication. Second, the revenue-share and host-read details come from reports citing The New York Times, which we could not open, and Vox’s own release does not include them. Third, no audience, download or sponsor figures have been published, and the series was two days old when we read the feed. Fourth, the guide concerns distribution and advertising; it takes no view on the politics.
Conclusion
“High Stakes” is a launch without a launch: no new feed, no new listing, just a Wednesday episode with its own title prefix and artwork in a show that already had 437. That gives a famous co-host an audience on day one, folds her listeners into an existing show’s numbers, and leaves sponsors and guests to ask more specific questions than usual. Until Vox publishes episode-level figures, the honest answer to how well it is doing is that nobody outside the company knows.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is "High Stakes" with Hillary Clinton?
A limited midterms series co-hosted by Hillary Clinton and Kara Swisher, produced by Vox Media. Vox says it debuted October 14, 2026 and runs as a third weekly episode of On with Kara Swisher, on Wednesdays.
Is "High Stakes" a separate podcast?
No. It is published in the On with Kara Swisher RSS feed, and an Apple Podcasts directory search on October 16, 2026 returned no separate show. Subscribers to On with Kara Swisher receive it automatically.
How long will "High Stakes" run?
The first episode's description says "For the next six weeks." TheWrap, citing The New York Times, says weekly episodes run through mid-November, and Clinton said she might continue if the audience is large enough.
Who gets the advertising revenue from "High Stakes"?
TheWrap, citing The New York Times, reports that Clinton, Swisher and Vox Media share advertising revenue. No split has been published.
Will Hillary Clinton read ads on the podcast?
The Hill reports she is "willing to read her own ads," and Podcast News Daily says she "will reportedly do some host-read ads." Vox's announcement does not address ads.
Why would a network launch a series inside an existing feed?
Vox has not said. Mechanically, a new episode in an existing feed reaches that feed's followers at once, while a new feed starts with none; the trade-off is that the series' audience is counted as the host show's.
