Ambies vs Webbys: Which Podcast Award Is Worth Entering in 2026?

Neither award is better for every podcast, and both now take entries for their 2027 editions. The Ambies are podcast-only and decided by Podcast Academy members; their late window runs Monday, October 12 to Friday, November 6, 2026, at $285 for Academy members and $335 for non-members. The Webbys judge podcasts alongside the rest of the internet; their Early Entry Deadline is Friday, October 30, 2026. Key warning: the Webbys' $255 discounted rate applies only to categories marked #, and none of the podcast categories we read carries that mark. Neither fee buys a nomination.

  • The 2027 Ambies list three price windows: early bird $160/$210 (closed September 4), regular $235/$285 (closed October 9) and late $285/$335 (October 12 to November 6, 2026), member/non-member (Ambies entry site; Ambies rules).
  • The 31st Webby Awards opened entries on September 15, 2026; the Early Entry Deadline is October 30, 2026. Published fees run from $105 (student) to $835 (advertising campaign), with $525 early and $595 final for a “General Single” entry (Webby season explainer; Webby fees).

  • Webby fees “do not guarantee any score, nomination, or award” and become non-refundable after November 4, 2026 (Webby Awards).
  • Ambies nominees are due in January 2027 (Podnews press release); Webby nominees in early April 2027, winners in late April and the show in May 2027 (Webby Awards).

What Are the Ambies?

The Ambies are the Awards for Excellence in Audio, run by The Podcast Academy and limited to podcasting. The 2027 edition is the 7th, with “a total of 35 unique categories” (Podnews press release). The categories page groups them as 23 Show Recognition, 9 Talent Recognition and 3 Advertising Recognition categories, including new Best Music Podcast and Best Episode of The Year awards (Ambies).

The 2027 rules require that entries “must have published at least 3 episodes between January 1, 2026 and December 31, 2026.” A podcast may enter at most three Show Recognition categories, and “up to seven nominees will be selected for each category” (Ambies rules).

What Are the Webbys?

The Webby Awards honor work across the internet and are overseen by IADAS, which the Webbys describe as “a global judging body of more than 3,000 industry experts from over 40 countries” (Webby Awards).

Podcasts have four groups: Shows, Individual Episode, Limited-Series & Specials and Features (Webby Awards). The current category list marks as new Best Video Podcast Co-Hosts, Individual Episode categories for Technology, Sports and Public Service & Activism, and Limited-Series & Specials: Sports. Features also include Best Branded Podcast or Segment and Best Indie Podcast (Webby categories). The same work may be entered in several categories, and each is judged separately (Webby FAQ).

Closed Ambies windows (early bird and regular) are not charted. The Webbys do not say which fee row applies to a podcast entry, and no podcast category on its category list carries the # mark, so the $255 row is shown for comparison only. The Webbys publish no final deadline date on the pages we read.

The chart shows that the Ambies' late fees sit below every Webby fee row except the discounted one, which the podcast categories we read do not qualify for.

Three cautions. First, Academy members must register with their Podcast Academy email for the member price, and the Ambies pages we read do not say whether the fee is charged per category (Ambies entry site). Second, the Webbys' fee page lists seven rows (Student, Discounted, Creator Single, General Single, Social Campaigns, Software, Advertising Campaign) but does not say which one a podcast entry falls under, so confirm the price in the entry system before budgeting (Webby Awards). Our guide on how to write an award entry uses the General Single row as the Webbys' standard fee. Third, entering several categories multiplies the cost in both programs, as what business awards cost sets out.

Refunds differ. The Webbys allow withdrawal until Wednesday, November 4, 2026, refunding the fee minus a $155 processing fee per entry, and nothing after that (Webby FAQ). Invoices unpaid by December 23 are repriced at the then-current rate, and entries unpaid by February 18, 2027 are disqualified from certain recognition levels (Webby Awards). The Ambies say that if a submission is disqualified, “the entry fee will be returned to the submitter” (Ambies rules).

Who Judges Each Award?

For the Ambies, the Ambies Jury selects nominees, and “Regular Members of The Podcast Academy will have one month to listen to nominated podcasts in their assigned categories and vote for winners” (Ambies rules). New for 2027, Best Podcast Host (or Hosts) and Podcast of the Year add a Listener’s Choice award decided by the public, while members still vote for the Ambie itself. The Academy says people must join by January 15, 2027 to vote (Podnews press release).

For the Webbys, IADAS selects five nominees per category and one winner (Webby FAQ). Podcast criteria are listed as “Concept & Writing, Quality of Craft, Overall Experience & more” (Webby Awards). A separate People’s Voice award is decided by public vote during a two-week window in April 2027 (Webby season explainer).

Which Podcasts Are Eligible?

The Ambies do not bar funded shows across the board; the self-financing language appears in two categories. Best Indie Podcast requires that podcasts be “self-financed, meaning funded directly by the creators,” bars commissioning or funding by “a network, brand, studio, or streaming platform”, and allows distribution partners only if they did not contribute funding. Best Indie Podcast Host or Hosts carries a similar rule (Ambies categories). Other categories, such as Podcast of The Year, carry no such rule on the page, and the Advertising Recognition group includes Best Branded, for podcasts made “in partnership with or on behalf of a brand, company, or organization.”

The Webbys use a time test instead. Work that is published once “must have been originally published in or after October 2025”, ongoing work must be live when entered, and all entries must stay online “through Mid 2027” (Webby Awards). Video podcasts should be dubbed or subtitled into English, and an English transcript is encouraged for audio-only shows (Webby FAQ).

Where the Ambies Win

  • Podcast peers. Every category is a podcast category, and podcast professionals in the Academy vote.
  • Clear pricing. One published fee per window, with $50 off for members in every window.
  • A protected indie lane. Self-funded shows compete with each other in the two Indie categories.

Where the Webbys Win

  • Video and episode depth. Separate categories for video podcast hosts and co-hosts, individual episodes by topic and limited series.
  • Branded and company shows. A Best Branded Podcast or Segment category, and no funding test in the pages we read.
  • A public award. People’s Voice runs in every category alongside the judged award.

Who Should Choose the Ambies?

Shows with at least three 2026 episodes that want recognition from other podcasters, and especially self-funded shows that fit the Indie categories. The only window left is the late one, which opens October 12. Our recommendation, not a rule of either program: if you will enter several titles, compare the cost of Academy membership with the $50 member saving per entry first.

Who Should Choose the Webbys?

Video-led shows, branded or company podcasts, and teams entering a podcast as part of a wider digital campaign. Enter before October 30 if you want the early price, and check which fee row the entry system applies to a podcast category before paying.

Final Verdict: Ambies or Webbys?

It depends on the show. A self-funded independent podcast has a clear fit with the Ambies and a lower published fee there. A branded, network or video-first show can enter either, but has more matching categories at the Webbys. Treat either fee as the cost of a judged submission, not a marketing spend with a predictable return. A nomination or win reported by the press is earned coverage; the entry fee does not buy it, and an award belongs in a press kit or media kit only as the program states it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is cheaper to enter, the Ambies or the Webbys?

For most podcasts, the Ambies. Their late window charges $285 for Podcast Academy members and $335 for non-members. The Webbys publish $525 early and $595 final for a General Single entry; their $255 discounted rate applies only to categories marked #, and no podcast category we read carries the mark (Ambies; Webby Awards).

Is the 2027 Ambies entry window still open?

The regular window closed on October 9, 2026. The late window runs from Monday, October 12 to Friday, November 6, 2026, at $285 for members and $335 for non-members, according to the Ambies entry site.

When is the Webby Awards entry deadline?

The Early Entry Deadline for the 31st Annual Webby Awards is Friday, October 30, 2026. The Webby pages we read list final-deadline prices but no final deadline date, so check the Webby site before planning a later entry.

Can a branded or network-funded podcast enter the Ambies?

Yes, outside the Indie categories. The self-financing rule applies to Best Indie Podcast and Best Indie Podcast Host or Hosts, and the Advertising Recognition group includes Best Branded for shows made with or for a brand (Ambies categories page).

Does paying the entry fee guarantee a nomination or win?

No. The Webbys say fees cover inclusion in the review process only and do not guarantee any score, nomination or award. The Ambies pages promise no result either.

When are the nominees announced?

Ambies nominees are due in January 2027, per the Podcast Academy announcement. Webby nominees are announced in early April 2027 and winners in late April, with the show in May 2027 (Webby Awards).

How We Compared the Ambies and the Webbys

When: the awarding bodies' own pages were read on October 11, 2026, with the Podcast Academy's announcement as carried by Podnews for the 2027 changes. Pricing checked October 2026.

Limitations: we did not enter either contest or reach checkout, so we could not see which Webby fee row the entry system applies to podcast categories or whether the Ambies charge per category. The Webbys' final deadline and the Ambies' 2027 ceremony date were not published on the pages we read. The verdicts are our recommendation, not rules of either program.
