What Does a 2026 Signal Award Actually Mean, and Is a Podcast Award Worth Entering?

A 2026 Signal Award, announced October 20, 2026, means judges scored a podcast above a threshold, not that it beat every rival: Gold, Silver and Bronze are set by scores, and Podnews counts 465 Gold winners. That makes a Signal win a credible quality mark worth citing accurately, but a weaker claim than “best in category.”

Key Findings

  • The Signal Awards announced the winners of its fifth annual competition on October 20, 2026, including Gold for Amy Poehler (Best Host) and Monica Lewinsky (Best Host, Culture) (Signal Awards announcement).
  • “Every entry is evaluated by multiple Judges for a cumulative score and designated as Gold, Silver or Bronze based on scoring thresholds” (Signal Awards, Judging).
  • Podnews reports 1,226 recognised podcasts and 465 Gold winners; Signal says Listener’s Choice drew over 260,000 votes from 94,000 unique voters (Podnews, October 21, 2026; Signal Awards).
  • Entry fees for 2026 ran from $285 for an individual episode to $345 for Brand Storytelling at the June 26 final deadline, and fees are not refundable (Signal Awards, Eligibility, Guidelines and Fees).
  • Winners “can purchase” an engraved statuette and receive digital badges; Signal does not offer individual judges’ comments or ratings (Signal Awards FAQ).

What Did the Signal Awards Announce on October 20?

The Signal Awards, a podcast competition now in its fifth year, announced its 2026 winners on October 20, 2026 under the theme “Recognizing the Risk Takers” (Signal Awards announcement). Named winners include Monica Lewinsky (Gold, Best Host, Culture, for Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky), Amy Poehler (Gold, Best Host, for Good Hang with Amy Poehler), Khloé Kardashian (Silver, Best Host, Culture) and Jorge Ramos and Paola Ramos (Gold, Best New Podcast, for The Moment).

Signal also named honorary awards chosen by its editorial staff: the Audio Icon Award for Phoebe Judge of Criminal and the Special Achievement Award for Pablo Torre of Pablo Torre Finds Out. iHeartPodcasts is Company of the Year and iHeartMedia’s Ruby Studios is Agency of the Year, awards Signal gives to “the company and agency that earn the greatest number of awards in this year’s competition.” The honors will be presented at a Winner’s Party on November 9 at 501 Union in Brooklyn (Signal Awards).

The announcement says submissions to video categories were “nearly doubling year over year,” with “growing interest in independent creators and personality-led programming.” Signal published no entry counts to support that, so we report it as Signal’s description.

How Are Signal Award Winners Chosen?

By score, against thresholds. Signal says members of its Judging Academy, “a by-invitation cohort of professionals and on-mic talent,” independently listen to and rate each entry, and that “Every entry is evaluated by multiple Judges for a cumulative score and designated as Gold, Silver or Bronze based on scoring thresholds” (Signal Awards, Judging; Signal Awards FAQ).

Judges score four criteria: Quality of Craft, Content, Creativity & Innovation, and Experience. Brand Storytelling entries are also scored on Brand Integration, which asks whether “the brand use[d] the audio medium in a compelling way” (Signal Awards, Judging).

The consequence is that a category can have several Golds. In the highlights Signal published with its announcement, three categories show it clearly:

Signal also says an entry “can be entered in multiple categories as appropriate,” and “If work is entered in multiple categories, it is eligible to win multiple times.” Due to the volume of entries, it “cannot offer individual comments and ratings of the work submitted” (Signal Awards FAQ).

How Many Podcasts Were Recognized?

Signal’s announcement does not give a total. Podnews, the podcast-industry newsletter, reported on October 21, 2026: “There are 1,226 recognised podcasts, and 465 gold winners. The Listener’s Choice Awards received more than 260,000 votes” (Podnews). Signal’s own figure for the public vote is “over 260,000 votes from 94,000 unique voters” (Signal Awards).

We could not find the number of entries, so the share of entrants who win anything is unknown. That is the figure a buyer would most want, and it is the one competitions of this kind rarely publish. Listener’s Choice is a separate, audience-voted honor; a show with a large, mobilized audience has an advantage in it that has little to do with the judges’ criteria.

What Does It Cost to Enter, and What Does a Winner Get?

Entry cost $285 to $345 per entry at the June 26, 2026 final deadline, more in the grace period, and fees are not refundable (Signal Awards, Eligibility, Guidelines and Fees).

The Professional Plan price covers a subscription of three entries. Grace-period fees (deadline September 11, 2026) were $345 for Shows, Limited Series and Brand Storytelling, $295 for Individual Episodes and $1,035 for the Professional Plan. Statuettes are bought separately; Signal does not list their price on the pages we read.

A single show entered in three categories at the final deadline would have cost $975 in entry fees before any statuette, and an entry can win in each category it enters.

Eligibility was broad: the competition is open to anyone “involved in the process of creating, running, hosting, managing, maintaining, marketing or promoting podcasts,” work must have been “originally published after September 1, 2025,” and there is no limit on the number of entries. By entering, the entrant grants Signal the right to use the work “for exhibition, promotion and publication purposes in any medium” (Signal Awards).

What a winner receives is modest. Signal’s FAQ says Gold, Silver, Bronze and Listener’s Choice winners “can purchase a customized, engraved statuette,” that “Digital badges are provided,” and that all winners are invited to the Winner’s Party. Its winners page invites winners to “purchase handcrafted Signal Awards statuettes,” and the FAQ encourages buying extra statuettes “for their team and clients” (Signal Awards FAQ; Signal Awards winners page). There is no cash prize on the pages we read.

Can a Company’s Own Podcast Win?

Yes. Signal runs Brand Storytelling categories, priced at $345 per entry at both deadlines, and judges them on brand integration as well as craft (Signal Awards; Signal Awards). A company that sponsors or produces a show can also enter through its agency, and agencies that win most often are recognized: this year’s Agency of the Year is iHeartMedia’s Ruby Studios, per Signal’s announcement.

Because Agency and Company of the Year go to whoever earns the most awards, volume of entries helps. That is a reason to read those titles as a measure of output as well as quality.

For a brand, the more useful question is what the entry is for. A Gold in a Brand Storytelling category tells prospective guests and partners that independent judges rated the show’s craft and its use of the brand highly. It does not tell anyone how many people listen, which the judging criteria do not measure.

What This Means for Anyone Buying a Placement

An award is earned recognition you can cite, not coverage. The points below are our recommendations, not Signal rules.

  • Describe a win exactly. “Gold, Best Host, 2026 Signal Awards” is accurate. “Won best host” implies a single winner, and the category had four Golds. Journalists check, and an inflated claim costs more credibility than the award adds.
  • Budget the whole cost. Entry fees across several categories, plus statuettes if you want something physical, plus staff time. See how to write an award entry.
  • Compare competitions before entering. The Ambies and Webbys publish different fees, judging and eligibility rules; see Ambies vs Webbys.
  • Do not treat Listener’s Choice as a quality verdict. It measures how many people a show mobilized to vote, which is useful, but different.
  • No award guarantees placements. A win can support a pitch to a host or editor; it does not oblige anyone to book or cover you. For what podcast appearances do and do not deliver, see which podcast platform gives a guest search visibility.

Methodology and Limitations

Four limits apply. First, Signal publishes no entry count, so we cannot calculate a win rate. Second, the 1,226 and 465 totals are Podnews’s figures, not Signal’s; we could not reconcile them against the full gallery, which loads dynamically. Third, our category counts come from Signal’s highlights list, which may be partial. Fourth, we read Signal’s pages on October 21, 2026 through a text reader; the fees shown were for the 2026 competition, which has closed, and next year’s may differ.

Conclusion

A Signal Award is a judged, scored mark of quality from a panel of working professionals, and a 2026 winner can say so. It is not a ranking: hundreds of shows took Gold, medals rest on thresholds rather than head-to-head results, and winners pay for their own statuettes. For a company weighing an entry, the honest calculation is a few hundred dollars per category for a credential that helps a pitch and a website, and nothing more certain than that.
