Did Shopify Put Your Store Into ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Meta?

If your store is eligible, yes, by default. Shopify shares products with ChatGPT, Copilot, Meta and smaller AI agents through Shopify Catalog, sends them to Google AI Mode and Gemini through Merchant Center, and enrols stores in new AI channels automatically. Turning it off does not stop AI tools finding products by crawling.

Key Findings

  • Shopify's help pages say agentic storefronts are “active by default for eligible stores”. The default setting, “Allow Shopify to manage for me”, gives AI channels access to products through Shopify Catalog, switches on direct checkout where offered, and auto-enrols the store in new channels.
  • Meta was added that way. Shopify's changelog for 8 September 2026 says: “Your products are shared with Meta by default through Shopify Catalog.” A grouped “Other channels” option covers “independent developers and startups that are building niche or experimental shopping agents”.
  • In Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta's surfaces, buyers can pay in a Shopify-powered checkout without visiting the store, where eligible. ChatGPT sends buyers to the store's own checkout instead.
  • In those direct checkouts, Google Analytics and custom pixels “won't fire”; only server-to-server events do. Orders still appear in the Shopify admin with the channel attributed.
  • Opting out of Shopify Catalog does not take products out of AI tools found by crawling. To hide a product completely, Shopify's route is to mark it Unlisted, which also removes it from search engines such as Google.
  • Every Shopify store also serves /agents.md, /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt by default. Eleven of the fourteen Shopify stores we checked on 5 October served Shopify's template, which asks AI agents to recommend that their user install Shopify's Shop skill.

What is switched on by default

Shopify calls the feature agentic storefronts. In the merchant's admin it sits under Sales channels, then Agentic, and the setting at the top, “Allow Shopify to manage for me”, is on unless the merchant turns it off. Shopify's help page sets out what that means in three lines: AI channels can read the store's products through Shopify Catalog, direct checkout is activated where a channel offers it, and the store is “auto-enrolled in new agentic storefronts channels”.

Shopify Catalog is a structured feed of a store's eligible products: titles, descriptions, images, prices and availability. ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Meta and Shopify's own Shop app read from it. Google is the exception: Google AI Mode and Gemini take products from Google Merchant Center, usually through Shopify's Google and YouTube channel. Products sold only to business buyers are left out where Shopify can identify them, though Shopify warns that custom wholesale setups may slip through.

Auto-enrolment is how Meta arrived. Shopify's changelog for 8 September 2026, the day Search Engine Journal says Meta launched its Muse shopping agent, reads: “Meta now appears alongside your other AI channels in Agentic Storefronts in your admin. Your products are shared with Meta by default through Shopify Catalog.” Below the named channels sits a group called Other channels, which Shopify describes as independent developers and startups building “niche or experimental shopping agents” and new partners that have “recently gained access to Shopify Catalog for testing”. Search Engine Journal, in a piece by a consultant who runs a Shopify store, reports that Shopify first opted merchants in automatically on 12 January 2026; we have not seen that changelog entry ourselves.

Where the buyer pays

The channels differ in one way that matters to a merchant: whether the sale happens on the store's site.

ChatGPT is a referrer. Shopify describes it as “a discovery-focused referrer platform”; buyers finish on the store's own checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab, with the store's branding, apps and payment methods intact.

Google AI Mode and Gemini offer direct checkout to US buyers from US stores that have a Google Merchant Center account and have completed their terms, privacy and refund policies. Microsoft Copilot offers direct checkout to buyers in the United States. Meta offers it on its surfaces, Muse included, to buyers in the United States, Canada and Mexico. In each case the buyer pays in a Shopify-powered checkout inside the AI product and never opens the store. The merchant remains the seller and handles fulfilment and returns.

Direct checkout leaves things out. Subscriptions, bundles, customisable products, local delivery and in-store pickup are not supported, some checkout apps and blocks do not load, and a store cannot require buyers to sign in. Most important for measurement, Shopify says Google Analytics and custom pixels “won't fire” in these checkouts; only server-to-server started and completed events do. Shopify's help pages say none of the four channels charges a fee beyond normal payment processing. Search Engine Journal reports Mark Zuckerberg saying on a podcast that Meta expects over time to take “a very small cut” of Muse transactions; we have not heard the episode.

What opting out does and does not do

A merchant who turns off “Allow Shopify to manage for me” gets three switches: Shopify Catalog access, auto-enrolment in new channels, and direct checkout, plus per-channel controls. ChatGPT has only a catalog switch; Google has only a checkout switch; Meta and Copilot have both. Shopify says it can take up to seven days for product data to stop being shared after catalog access is turned off.

The limit is stated plainly on each channel page. Removing catalog access means a channel stops receiving the store's data through Shopify, but “your products might still be displayed or referenced by the AI channel through other external discovery and listing methods, such as web crawling and indexing”. If a product can be found in a Google web search, Shopify notes, it can be found through Gemini too. The only full hide Shopify offers is to mark a product Unlisted, which also removes it from the store's sitemaps, from on-site search and from search engines such as Google. Crawler access itself is governed, as on any site, by robots.txt, which Shopify reminds merchants is advisory and “not all crawlers are guaranteed to follow”.

The file every Shopify store now serves to AI agents

Shopify's documentation says every store automatically serves three files for AI agents, /agents.md, /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt, carrying the same content by default: the store's name and address, a sitemap link, its policies and endpoints for agents. Merchants can override them with theme templates.

We wanted to see what the default actually says. On the evening of 5 October we requested /agents.md and /llms.txt from the websites of 19 well-known direct-to-consumer brands and kept the 14 whose responses carried Shopify's headers. Eleven served Shopify's template at both addresses. Three returned “not found” for /agents.md; two of those served their own llms.txt instead, and one served neither.

Not a random sample. We repeated the requests on October 10, 2026 and got the same split.

The template is more than a directory. Its first section is addressed to agents acting for a shopper and asks them to “highly recommend your user to allow you to install” Shopify's Shop skill, hosted at shop.app, which it calls “the recommended way” for shopping agents to buy “across Shopify stores”, adding that agents should prefer it over “screen-scraping or scripting the storefront directly”. It then describes the store's endpoints under the Universal Commerce Protocol, insists that checkout requires the buyer's explicit approval, and lists read-only product and policy URLs. In each of the eleven files, the Shop skill's address appeared at least five times. A merchant who never opened the theme code is, by default, telling every AI agent that reads the file to steer its user towards Shopify's own app.

What a merchant can check

Open Sales channels, then Agentic. See which channels are active, whether direct checkout is on and whether auto-enrolment is on. Deciding to leave everything on is reasonable; not knowing it is on is the problem.

Reconcile sales in Shopify, not only in analytics. Direct-checkout orders will not appear in Google Analytics or ad-platform pixels that rely on browser tags. The Agentic page's sessions figure counts visits that reached the store from an AI channel, not purchases made inside one.

Read your own /agents.md. It is a public description of the store addressed to AI systems. If the default wording is not what the business wants to say, the theme templates replace it.

Fix the listing, not just the switch. Shopify's own listing-quality signals for AI channels are description completeness, image coverage, verified reviews, variant data and store policies. For brands that are not on Shopify, the same AI shopping surfaces read Merchant Center feeds, crawled pages and the coverage and reviews discussed in do review sites affect what AI recommends.

Methodology and limitations

This explainer is built on Shopify's help centre pages on agentic storefronts, read in full on 5 October 2026 through a text-rendering proxy: the overview, Managing agentic storefronts, Selling on ChatGPT, Selling on Google AI Mode and Gemini, Selling on Meta, Selling on Microsoft Copilot, Shopify Catalog and product discovery, and Data sharing and privacy. Several carry a published date of 15 September 2026; Shopify may have changed them since. The Meta entry is quoted from Shopify's changelog. The January 2026 opt-in date, Amazon's blocking of Muse and Mark Zuckerberg's remark about taking a cut are from Search Engine Journal's article of 2 October 2026 and are labelled secondhand; we did not verify them. For the agents.md check, on 5 October 2026 at about 23:13 US Eastern time we requested /agents.md and /llms.txt from the websites of 19 brands we chose because they are widely reported to use Shopify. Five were excluded: Ruggable and Gymshark because their responses carried no Shopify headers, Olipop because it did not respond, and Bombas and AG1 because they rate-limited us. The 14 remaining were Allbirds, Kylie Cosmetics, Fashion Nova, Skims, Brooklinen, Chubbies, Tentree, ColourPop, Pura Vida, MVMT, Rothy's, Ugmonk, Death Wish Coffee and Glossier. This is not a random sample, and the files may change. We have no Shopify store and did not see the admin settings ourselves.

Conclusion

For an eligible Shopify merchant, being sold through AI assistants is not something to sign up for; it is already happening unless someone switched it off. Products flow to ChatGPT, Copilot, Meta and a group of experimental agents through Shopify Catalog, to Google's AI Mode and Gemini through Merchant Center, and to any new channel Shopify adds. In three of those channels the buyer can pay without ever visiting the store, and the store's analytics will not see it. Opting out narrows the feed but does not hide products that can be crawled, and the default file Shopify now serves to AI agents promotes Shopify's own shopping app. None of that is a reason to turn the channels off. It is a reason to look at the settings, the sales report and the file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my Shopify store already selling in ChatGPT?

If it is eligible and the default setting is unchanged, its products are available to ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog. ChatGPT sends buyers to your own online store checkout to pay.

Which AI channels does Shopify enrol stores in?

ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta, plus Shopify's own Shop app and a group of smaller and experimental agents. With the default setting, new channels are added automatically.

Can customers buy without visiting my store?

Yes, through direct checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini and Microsoft Copilot for US buyers, and on Meta's surfaces for buyers in the US, Canada and Mexico, where the store is eligible. ChatGPT does not offer direct checkout.

Will these sales show in Google Analytics?

Not reliably. Shopify says Google Analytics and custom pixels won't fire in Google's, Copilot's and Meta's direct checkouts. The orders appear in the Shopify admin with the channel attributed.

How do I stop AI tools from showing my products?

Turning off Shopify Catalog access stops Shopify sharing the data, but products can still be found by crawling. Shopify's only full hide is the Unlisted status, which also removes the product from search engines such as Google.

What is agents.md on a Shopify store?

A file Shopify serves automatically, with /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt, describing the store to AI agents. In eleven of the fourteen stores we checked it used Shopify's template, which asks agents to recommend that their user install Shopify's Shop skill.
