What Is a YouTube Channel for a Podcast?
A YouTube channel for a podcast is a YouTube channel whose full episodes are grouped into a playlist that has been designated as a podcast in YouTube Studio, which makes the show eligible for podcast features on YouTube and YouTube Music.
The podcast designation is what separates it from an ordinary playlist. YouTube lists possible features for eligible podcasts, including “Podcast badges on Watch and Playlist pages” (YouTube Help). If you only need to get an existing audio show onto YouTube alongside Apple and Spotify, our guide on submitting a podcast to Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube covers the feed routes. This guide covers building the channel itself, which you need for video episodes. For why video matters, see how people consume podcasts now.
How to Create a YouTube Channel for a Podcast at a Glance
| Step | Action | Expected result |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Create the channel under a Brand Account | A channel with the show's name and handle, shareable with managers |
| 2 | Verify the channel by phone | Uploads over 15 minutes and custom thumbnails unlocked |
| 3 | Create the podcast in YouTube Studio | A podcast playlist with title, description and square thumbnail |
| 4 | Upload full episodes into the podcast | Episodes in order, each with title and description |
| 5 | Add chapters, captions and thumbnails | Navigable, accessible episodes |
| 6 | Publish Shorts and clips outside the podcast playlist | Promotion without mixing clips into the show |
| 7 | Link the channel from your site and feeds | Listeners and search engines can find it |
Time: about an hour to set up, plus processing time for uploads (our estimate). Tools: a Google Account, a phone for verification, episode video files. Cost: YouTube does not charge to create a channel. Skill level: beginner.
What You Need Before Starting
- A Google Account that the business controls, not a departing employee's personal account.
- The show's exact name, a short description and a square show image at 1280x1280 pixels, the size YouTube recommends.
- A phone number that can receive a text or voice call for verification.
- Episode files as video. YouTube says MP3s “can't be turned into podcasts” through Studio; audio-only shows use the RSS route instead.
- Transcripts or caption files if you have them; see how to add transcripts to your podcast.
- If you record remotely, a tool that records separate tracks; see Riverside vs Zencastr.
Step 1: Create the Channel Under a Brand Account
Create the channel with the show's name rather than on a personal channel, so ownership can be shared and handed over.
Process: sign in to YouTube on a computer or the mobile site, open your channel list and choose “Create a new channel”. Pick a profile picture, name and handle, then select Create channel. YouTube says this “creates a new Brand Account” that can have more than one manager or owner (YouTube Help). Add at least one second owner straight away. Expected result: a channel with the show's name and a handle. Verify: a second person can open YouTube Studio for the channel. Common mistake: using an existing Brand Account that already has a channel; YouTube says you cannot create a second one on it.
Step 2: Verify the Channel
Verify by phone before your first upload. Without it, full episodes will not upload.
YouTube's feature-eligibility page says verification lets you “upload videos longer than 15 minutes”, “add custom thumbnails” and “live stream”. A code is sent by text or voice call. Some advanced features need more: after phone verification, you either build channel history or verify with ID or video (YouTube Help). YouTube also says you may be asked to verify before creating a new podcast. Expected result: intermediate features enabled in Studio settings. Common mistake: uploading a 45-minute episode first and then wondering why it was rejected.

Verified channels can upload longer videos; the 15-minute figure is the limit verification removes.
Step 3: Create the Podcast in YouTube Studio
Create the podcast before uploading episodes, or convert an existing playlist.
Process: in YouTube Studio, select Create, then New podcast, then “Create a new podcast”. Enter the title, description, visibility and a square thumbnail, then save. To convert an existing playlist, go to Content, then Playlists, hover over the playlist, open Options and choose “Add podcast features” (YouTube Help). YouTube says: “We recommend 1280x1280 pixels for your square podcast thumbnail.” Expected result: a podcast in the Podcasts tab of Studio. Verify: the playlist shows podcast status in Studio.
Name it exactly as the show is named elsewhere. YouTube's discovery tips say to “use the same name of your podcast show” and “don't add extra words to your podcast title (including ‘podcast,’ unless that is part of your show's name)”, and to “add a detailed description” (YouTube Help). Common mistake: one podcast per season. YouTube says to avoid breaking seasons into separate podcasts.
Width in pixels

File size limits differ by device: YouTube lists 2 MB for video thumbnails and 10 MB for podcast thumbnails on mobile, and 50 MB on desktop.
Step 4: Upload Full Episodes Into the Podcast
Upload each full episode as a video and add it to the podcast playlist, in the order listeners should hear them.
YouTube's tips say the podcast “should only contain full-length episodes from all seasons in the order that they should be consumed” and to “avoid mixing clips, different shows, or uploads from other channels” (YouTube Help). Write a title that says what the episode is about and who the guest is, within YouTube's 100-character limit, and a description within the 5,000-character limit (YouTube Help). Put the guest's name and links near the top of the description. Expected result: episodes in the podcast playlist. Common mistake: uploading an audiogram of an MP3 and calling it video; it works, but you lose the reason to be on YouTube.
Step 5: Add Chapters, Captions and Thumbnails
Add chapters so viewers can jump to sections, captions for accessibility and search, and a custom 16:9 thumbnail per episode.
For manual chapters, YouTube says the first timestamp must start at 00:00, the video “should have at least three timestamps listed in ascending order”, and “the minimum length for video chapters is 10 seconds” (YouTube Help). Custom thumbnails need a verified account and YouTube lists a minimum width of 640 pixels, JPG or PNG, with a 16:9 aspect ratio for videos (YouTube Help). If you publish episodes on your own site too, mark them up with video structured data. Expected result: chapters visible on the progress bar. Verify: watch the episode logged out.
Step 6: Publish Shorts and Clips Outside the Podcast Playlist
Cut short clips to promote episodes, but keep them out of the podcast playlist.
Shorts can be “up to 3 minutes long” and are vertical uploads (YouTube Help). YouTube says Shorts made to support a podcast will not appear in YouTube Music. Link each Short to its full episode. Reposting the same clips across platforms has its own risks; see will YouTube Shorts bury reposted podcast clips. Expected result: a clip library that points back to full episodes. Common mistake: adding clips to the podcast playlist, which YouTube tells creators to avoid.
Step 7: Link the Channel From Your Site and Feeds
Add the channel and podcast playlist URL to your website, show notes and other podcast listings, and link guests' episodes from their bios.
Use tagged links where you want to measure clicks from YouTube descriptions; see tracking links with UTM parameters. Whether a YouTube presence affects AI assistants or guest visibility is an open question we have examined in does a YouTube presence affect AI answers and which platform gives a podcast guest search visibility. Expected result: the channel is linked from every place the show is listed.
How to Verify It Worked
- Podcast status: the playlist appears under Podcasts in YouTube Studio.
- Episodes: every full episode is in the playlist, in order, and no clips or Shorts are mixed in.
- Features: episodes longer than 15 minutes uploaded, custom thumbnails applied, chapters visible.
- Access: at least two people can manage the channel.
- YouTube Music: search for the show in YouTube Music; availability depends on eligibility, which YouTube decides.
How to Choose a Setup Route
| Situation | Recommended route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You record video | Upload videos and create a podcast in Studio | Full control of titles, thumbnails and chapters |
| Audio-only show with an RSS feed, in a supported country | Submit the RSS feed to YouTube | YouTube creates static-image videos from show art |
| Audio-only, RSS ingestion unavailable where you are | Create simple videos and upload them | Studio cannot turn MP3s into podcasts |
| Existing channel with mixed content | Set one playlist of full episodes as the podcast | Keeps clips and other uploads out of the show |
| Several shows | One podcast playlist per show | YouTube says not to mix different shows |
Common Problems and Fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Episode over 15 minutes will not upload | Channel not verified | Complete phone verification |
| No option to add a custom thumbnail | Channel not verified | Verify, then upload JPG or PNG at 16:9 |
| “Add podcast features” missing for a playlist | Playlist ineligible, for example content you do not own | Use a playlist of your own full episodes |
| Chapters do not show | Fewer than three timestamps, first not at 00:00, or a chapter under 10 seconds | Fix the timestamp list in the description |
| Show missing from YouTube Music | Eligibility or recent creation | Check podcast status in Studio; Shorts never appear there |
What Not to Do
- Do not create the channel on a personal account. Consequence: access is lost when that person leaves. Correction: Brand Account with two owners.
- Do not mix clips into the podcast. Consequence: a messy show page. Correction: Shorts and clips live outside the podcast playlist.
- Do not split seasons into separate podcasts. Consequence: YouTube advises against it. Correction: one podcast for the show.
- Do not stuff the title. Consequence: YouTube advises against extra words. Correction: use the show name exactly.
- Do not upload content you do not own. Consequence: YouTube says copyright violations can make episodes ineligible. Correction: clear music and guest rights.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a separate YouTube channel for my podcast?
Not necessarily. A podcast on YouTube is a playlist, so an existing channel can host it. A separate Brand Account channel is cleaner if the show has its own name, audience or several managers.
Can I upload an audio-only podcast to YouTube?
Yes, in two ways. In select countries you can submit your RSS feed and YouTube makes static-image videos from your show art. Otherwise you must upload video files, because YouTube says MP3s cannot be turned into podcasts in Studio.
Why can my channel not upload a full episode?
Unverified accounts are limited to videos of 15 minutes or less. Phone verification removes that limit and also unlocks custom thumbnails and live streaming.
What size should the podcast thumbnail be?
YouTube recommends 1280x1280 pixels for the square podcast thumbnail. Episode thumbnails are separate and use a 16:9 aspect ratio, with a minimum width of 640 pixels.
Should clips and Shorts go in the podcast playlist?
No. YouTube advises that the podcast contain only full-length episodes in order, and says Shorts made to support a podcast will not appear in YouTube Music.
Does creating a podcast on YouTube put it on YouTube Music?
Eligible podcasts can appear on YouTube Music, but YouTube decides eligibility. Shows submitted by RSS are available only on YouTube and YouTube Music, according to YouTube.
