What Is Perplexity?
Perplexity is an AI answer engine that searches the web in real time and returns a conversational answer with numbered citations linking to the original sources.
Perplexity's help page How does Perplexity work? (last modified September 3, 2026) says it interprets the question, searches the web and summarizes the most relevant sources, and that “Each answer includes numbered citations linking to the original sources”. Users can pick models including OpenAI's GPT-5 and Anthropic's Claude, and Perplexity's Pro page also lists Sonar, its “in-house model”. Perplexity builds its own search index with a crawler called PerplexityBot.
What Is ChatGPT Search?
ChatGPT search is the web-search capability inside OpenAI's ChatGPT that answers questions with current information and links to the sources it used.
OpenAI's help article Searching the web with ChatGPT says ChatGPT “may search the web automatically when your question would benefit from current information”, or a user can choose Search manually. It is available on the Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans, and “People who are not signed in can also use web search.” OpenAI's search crawler is OAI-SearchBot, and the help article says ChatGPT search “sometimes partners with other search providers”, linking to Microsoft's and Shopify's privacy statements.
Perplexity vs ChatGPT Search: Pricing
For a company that wants to be cited, price matters only because it decides what each user sees. Both products offer web search on a free tier. Perplexity's help center adds that Pro answers carry “10x as many citations per answer”, so paid users there may see more sources per answer. Pricing checked October 2026, from each company's own pages.
| Plan item | Perplexity | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Free tier with web search | Standard (Free): “Practically unlimited basic searches” and a “Very limited amount of Pro Searches” | Free; signed-out users can also search |
| Main individual paid plan | Perplexity Pro: price not stated on the help pages we read | Plus: $20 a month on chatgpt.com/pricing |
| Top individual plan | Max: “$200/monthly or $2000/annually” | Pro: from $100 a month, with “Your choice of 3 usage tiers” |
| Education | Education Pro: $10 a month with SheerID verification | Edu plan; price not checked |
| Business | Enterprise Pro “starts at $40/month or $400/year/seat” | Business and Enterprise plans; not checked |
| Where the price is published | Plan comparison and Max help articles | chatgpt.com/pricing |
The ChatGPT prices are as the public pricing page displayed them to a signed-out U.S. browser on October 8, 2026. Prices can vary by country and change often. Neither company charges a website to be crawled or cited.
How Each Shows Sources and Citations
Perplexity puts numbered citations on every answer and labels some cited sites; ChatGPT search shows citations and a Sources panel when it searches the web. Perplexity's help center says “Every answer includes citations linking to the original sources.” OpenAI's help article says responses that use web search “may include citations”, which a user can select to open the source.
ChatGPT search
According to OpenAI's help article (updated about two months before October 8, 2026, according to the page): select a citation to open its source; on desktop web, point to a citation to preview it; select Sources, when available, “to view cited sources and other relevant links”; select an image to view its source. On iOS and Android, results may include a map. OpenAI also warns users that “Search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect.”
Perplexity
Perplexity's Understanding source labels article (last modified October 6, 2026) describes a feature ChatGPT does not document: a small shield icon on some citations, with one of three labels, Government, Academic or Trusted. Perplexity says it rates “the whole website a source comes from, not each individual page”, using questions such as:
- “Does the site correct its mistakes?”
- “Does it say who wrote each piece?”
- “Does it keep news separate from advertising and opinion?”
Perplexity says “Perplexity's partnerships, payments, and other business arrangements do not affect a site's label”, that most domains have no label, and that no label “is not a negative judgment.” Its examples of Trusted sites are reuters.com and mayoclinic.org. Website owners can raise questions through Help > Contact Support. For a company, the practical lesson is that the coverage most likely to carry a label is coverage in outlets that publish corrections and bylines.
Crawlers and User Agents
OpenAI documents four agents and Perplexity documents two. The ones that matter for visibility are the search crawlers, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, which both companies tell site owners to allow. OpenAI also runs GPTBot for model training; Perplexity says PerplexityBot “is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models” and documents no separate training crawler.
| Agent | Company | What the company says it does | Published IP list |
|---|---|---|---|
OAI-SearchBot | OpenAI | “used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT’s search features” | openai.com/searchbot.json |
GPTBot | OpenAI | Crawls “content that may be used in training our generative AI foundation models” | openai.com/gptbot.json |
ChatGPT-User | OpenAI | Visits a page when a user asks ChatGPT or a Custom GPT a question; “not used for crawling the web in an automatic fashion” | openai.com/chatgpt-user.json |
OAI-AdsBot | OpenAI | Checks landing pages “submitted as ads on ChatGPT”; only visits those pages | openai.com/adsbot.json |
PerplexityBot | Perplexity | “designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity” | www.perplexity.com/perplexitybot.json |
Perplexity-User | Perplexity | Visits a page when a user asks a question, “to help provide an accurate answer and include a link to the page in its response” | www.perplexity.com/perplexity-user.json |
Sources: OpenAI's Overview of OpenAI Crawlers and Perplexity's Perplexity Crawlers page, both read October 8, 2026. All six IP files returned valid JSON that day. OpenAI says the version number in its user-agent strings may change, so match on the token, not the full string. To check that a visitor claiming to be one of these bots really is, compare its IP address with the published list, as our guide to verifying that a crawler is real explains.
Number of user agents each company documents, and how many it says follow robots.txt, October 10, 2026
Source: OpenAI, Overview of OpenAI Crawlers; Perplexity, Perplexity Crawlers, read October 10, 2026.
The user-initiated agents, ChatGPT-User and Perplexity-User, may not follow robots.txt because a person requested the fetch. OpenAI's page does not say whether OAI-AdsBot, which visits only pages submitted as ads, follows robots.txt.
How to Allow or Block Each in robots.txt
Both companies use robots.txt user-agent tokens, and both say each setting works independently. A company that wants to be cited in both products and keep its content out of OpenAI's model training can allow OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot and disallow GPTBot. OpenAI gives exactly that example: allow OAI-SearchBot “in order to appear in search results while disallowing GPTBot”.
# Visible in ChatGPT search and Perplexity
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /
# Opt out of OpenAI foundation-model training
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /
Remove the GPTBot group if you are happy for OpenAI to use your pages for training. A robots.txt file alone is not enough if a firewall or CDN blocks the bots first: OpenAI's help article says to “confirm that the website host or content delivery network allows traffic from OpenAI’s published searchbot IP addresses”, and Perplexity's crawler page has step-by-step allow rules for Cloudflare and AWS WAF, and tells site owners to “combine both User-Agent string matching and IP address verification”. Changes take up to about a day: OpenAI says “~24 hours”; Perplexity says “up to 24 hours”. Our step-by-step guide to blocking or allowing AI crawlers in robots.txt covers the syntax for other AI companies too.
Do User-Initiated Fetchers Respect robots.txt?
Neither company promises that its user-triggered fetcher obeys robots.txt. OpenAI says of ChatGPT-User: “Because these actions are initiated by a user, robots.txt rules may not apply.” Perplexity's crawler page says of Perplexity-User: “Since a user requested the fetch, this fetcher generally ignores robots.txt rules.” The robots.txt tokens that control search visibility are OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot.
Perplexity's own documents do not say quite the same thing. Its help-center article How does Perplexity follow robots.txt? (last modified September 14, 2026) says users could previously prompt Perplexity to summarize a URL blocked by robots.txt, but “this feature has been disabled to prevent misuse”, and “Now, PerplexityBot only crawls content in compliance with robots.txt.” It also says Perplexity “partners with third-party crawlers to help build our search index” and has updated its agreements so those providers also respect robots.txt, “particularly for news publisher sites.” The crawler page, read the same day, still carries the “generally ignores” sentence for Perplexity-User. We report both statements as published; Perplexity does not reconcile them.
OpenAI adds a point site owners often miss: “ChatGPT-User is not used to determine whether content may appear in Search. Please use OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt for managing Search opt outs and automatic crawl.”
What Each Can Still Show If You Block It
Blocking the search crawler reduces what either product shows about a page but may not remove the page entirely. OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot “will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links.” Perplexity says that if a page is blocked, “we may still index the domain, headline, and a brief factual summary.”
OpenAI's Publishers and Developers FAQ (updated about a month before October 8, 2026, according to the page) explains why and offers a stronger control: if OpenAI obtains the URL of a disallowed page “from a third-party search provider or by crawling other pages”, it “may surface just the link and page title in ChatGPT Atlas.” To stop that, OpenAI says to use the noindex meta tag, and notes that “in order for our crawler to read a meta tag, it must be allowed to crawl the relevant page(s).” Perplexity's pages that we read do not mention a noindex control. The same trade-off exists in Google: our explainer on whether blocking a crawler removes you from search covers why a disallow rule is not a removal tool.
Publisher Programs and Paid Data
Perplexity has announced two programs that pay publishers; OpenAI's help documents describe none. Perplexity's Publishers' Program, announced July 30, 2024, offered revenue sharing when “a publisher’s content is referenced” in an interaction that earns ad revenue, free API access, and free Enterprise Pro for partner staff for a year. Launch partners included TIME, Der Spiegel, Fortune and WordPress.com.
Comet Plus, announced August 25, 2025, is a subscription that Perplexity said would be $5 standalone and included in Pro and Max. Perplexity said it would distribute the revenue to participating publishers “minus a small portion for Perplexity’s compute costs”, allocated by “human visits, search citations, and agent actions.” Both announcements give publishers@perplexity.ai as the contact. These are blog announcements; we found no help-center article describing current Comet Plus terms or partner lists, so confirm terms with Perplexity before relying on them.
Perplexity also has premium data sources, licensed content “not available on the open web”, such as Statista, PitchBook and Wiley, plus connectors to subscriptions users already hold. These are data partnerships, not a route for an ordinary company website.
OpenAI's help articles take a different line. The publisher FAQ says “Any public website can appear in ChatGPT search”, and the search help article says “ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information. Placement is not guaranteed.” Neither page describes a publisher payment or partner program. OpenAI does run ads in ChatGPT, which is why OAI-AdsBot exists, but ads are separate from search citations; our explainer on whether you can pay to appear in a ChatGPT answer sets out that line.
Measuring Traffic and Visibility
ChatGPT search is easier to measure from your own analytics because OpenAI documents a UTM tag. The publisher FAQ says “ChatGPT automatically includes the UTM parameter utm_source=chatgpt.com in referral URLs, enabling clear tracking and analysis of inbound traffic from ChatGPT search results.” The Perplexity documentation we read does not describe a UTM parameter or any publisher analytics.
In practice, segment both in GA4: utm_source=chatgpt.com for ChatGPT, and the referring domain for Perplexity. Our guide to tracking AI referral traffic in GA4 gives the exact channel-group rules. Traffic shows only clicks. To see whether either assistant mentions you when nobody clicks, run the prompts in our guide to checking what AI says about your company.
Where Perplexity Wins
- Source transparency: numbered citations on every answer, by Perplexity's account, and published criteria for its Government, Academic and Trusted labels.
- A stated separation from money: Perplexity says partnerships and payments do not affect source labels.
- Publisher compensation: two announced programs that share revenue with publishers, including per-citation allocation under Comet Plus.
- No training crawler to manage: Perplexity says PerplexityBot is not used to crawl content for foundation models, and its help center says Perplexity “does not build foundation models”.
- Firewall guidance: step-by-step Cloudflare and AWS WAF allow rules on its crawler page.
Where ChatGPT Search Wins
- Granular controls: separate tokens for search (OAI-SearchBot) and training (GPTBot), plus a documented
noindexoption for link-only listings. - Measurement: automatic
utm_source=chatgpt.comon referral links. - Access without an account: web search on every plan, including for signed-out users.
- Consistent documentation: OpenAI's crawler page and help articles say the same thing about ChatGPT-User and robots.txt; Perplexity's two pages differ on Perplexity-User.
- More published IP lists: one file per agent, including the ads and training crawlers.
Who Should Prioritize Perplexity?
Choose Perplexity first if: you are a publisher or a company with a substantial editorial site and want to be paid or labelled for your content, or your audience is researchers who read cited sources.
Avoid relying on Perplexity alone if: you need to measure referral traffic with a documented UTM tag, or you need firm assurance that user-initiated fetches respect robots.txt.
Best for: publishers and companies whose visibility depends on being a cited source.
Starting price: free for users; Max is $200 a month (checked October 2026).
Primary strength: the most documented detail on how sources are shown and labelled.
Main limitation: conflicting statements on whether Perplexity-User follows robots.txt; no documented referral tagging.
Verdict: the better fit when credit for content and source transparency matter most.
Who Should Prioritize ChatGPT Search?
Choose ChatGPT search first if: you want to be visible in search while opting out of model training, or you need clean attribution of visits in your analytics.
Avoid relying on ChatGPT search alone if: you expect a publisher payment program or a published standard for how sources are judged; OpenAI's help documents describe neither.
Best for: companies that want fine-grained crawler control and measurable referrals.
Starting price: free, including signed out; Plus is $20 a month (checked October 2026).
Primary strength: separate search and training controls, a noindex route and automatic UTM tagging.
Main limitation: OpenAI does not publish how it judges sources, beyond “multiple factors”.
Verdict: the better fit when control and measurement matter most.
How to Choose Between Perplexity and ChatGPT Search
Most companies should not choose. Both search crawlers can be allowed in the same robots.txt at no cost. The table below is for deciding which product's settings and reporting to work on first.
| If you need... | Choose |
|---|---|
| To be visible in search but opt out of AI training | ChatGPT search (allow OAI-SearchBot, disallow GPTBot); Perplexity has no training crawler to block |
| To measure clicks from AI answers in GA4 | ChatGPT search (documented utm_source=chatgpt.com) |
| To be paid as a publisher when your content is cited | Perplexity (Publishers' Program, Comet Plus; confirm current terms) |
| To know what a trusted source looks like to the assistant | Perplexity (published source-label criteria) |
| To keep a blocked page from appearing even as a link | ChatGPT search (noindex, crawlable); Perplexity documents no equivalent |
| Firewall rules for bot traffic | Either; Perplexity gives WAF steps, OpenAI gives IP lists for every agent |
| Visibility in both | Allow OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot and their IP ranges |
Final Verdict: Perplexity or ChatGPT Search?
For a company that wants to be cited, the answer is both, because allowing two crawlers costs nothing. If you have to put one first, put ChatGPT search first if control and measurement matter most: OpenAI documents separate search and training opt-outs, a noindex route and automatic referral tagging. Put Perplexity first if you are a publisher who wants credit or payment, or if you want a published standard for how sources are judged. What decides it is whether your goal is managing access and attribution (ChatGPT search) or being recognised and paid as a source (Perplexity). Neither company guarantees placement in its answers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to do anything to appear in ChatGPT search or Perplexity?
Mostly, do not block them. OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search and asks sites to allow OAI-SearchBot and its published IP ranges. Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot and its IP ranges. Neither offers a submission form, and OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed.
Can I block AI training but stay visible in ChatGPT search?
Yes. OpenAI says its settings are independent: allow OAI-SearchBot to appear in search results and disallow GPTBot to signal that content should not be used to train its foundation models. Perplexity says PerplexityBot is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models, so there is no separate training token to block.
Does blocking PerplexityBot or OAI-SearchBot remove my company completely?
Not necessarily. OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot can still appear as navigational links. Perplexity says a blocked page may still have its domain, headline and a brief factual summary indexed. Both also say they use third-party search providers or crawlers.
Do ChatGPT-User and Perplexity-User obey robots.txt?
Not reliably. OpenAI says that because ChatGPT-User actions are user-initiated, robots.txt rules may not apply. Perplexity's crawler documentation says Perplexity-User generally ignores robots.txt rules, although its help center says the old ability to summarize a blocked URL on request was disabled.
How long does a robots.txt change take to apply?
OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours from a robots.txt update for its search systems to adjust. Perplexity says it may take up to 24 hours for its systems to reflect changes.
How do I track visitors from ChatGPT and Perplexity in analytics?
OpenAI documents that ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs from ChatGPT search. The Perplexity documentation we read does not describe a UTM parameter, so check your analytics referrer reports for Perplexity domains instead.
Can a company pay to be cited by Perplexity or ChatGPT?
Neither company documents a paid route into organic citations. Perplexity says partnerships, payments and other business arrangements do not affect its source labels. OpenAI says ChatGPT ranks results using multiple factors and that placement is not guaranteed.
What is Perplexity's Trusted source label?
A shield label Perplexity shows on some cited domains: Government, Academic or Trusted. Perplexity rates whole sites with questions such as whether they correct mistakes and name authors. Most domains have no label, and Perplexity says that is not a negative judgment.
Does Perplexity have a publisher program?
Perplexity announced a Publishers' Program in July 2024, with revenue sharing, API access and free Enterprise Pro for partner staff, and Comet Plus in August 2025, which it said would pass most subscription revenue to participating publishers. Both were announced on its blog; contact is publishers@perplexity.ai.
How We Compared Perplexity and ChatGPT Search
Criteria: how each shows sources, which crawlers each runs, how robots.txt applies, what blocked pages can still show, firewall and IP guidance, publisher programs, referral measurement and published plan prices. When: all pages were read on October 8, 2026. How: OpenAI's crawler page and Perplexity's crawler page and IP files were fetched with a standard HTTP client. OpenAI's and Perplexity's help centers and pricing pages refused plain HTTP requests, so we read them in a desktop browser. We used only each company's own documentation and blog; we did not use third-party studies of citation rates.
Limitations: we did not test how often either product cites any site, and we did not run crawl tests against our own server. Neither company publishes how it ranks or selects sources. The ChatGPT prices are as the public pricing page displayed them to a signed-out U.S. browser session. Perplexity's publisher programs are described from their announcement posts and may have changed. Help-center articles change often; dates given are those shown on each page.
