First, confirm the problem
Ask the actual questions a buyer would ask: "best [your category] companies," "who should we consider for [your problem]," "compare [you] and [competitor]." Do it in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. If your competitors appear and you do not, keep reading.
The seven usual causes
1. A weak entity footprint
The model cannot confidently say what you are. Your site, LinkedIn, and coverage describe you differently, or barely describe you at all. This is the most common cause and the cheapest to fix: one canonical description, repeated everywhere, backed by Organization schema. See Schema and Structured Data.
2. Few authoritative third-party mentions
Everything written about you was written by you. Models discount self-description heavily. Editorial placements, interviews, and citations are the independent votes that get companies named, which is why placements matter beyond vanity.
3. Inconsistent company descriptions
You rebranded, repositioned, or let old bios rot. The web now contains three versions of you, and the model averages them into vagueness. Consistency is a signal in itself.
4. Little topical depth
Nothing on the public web connects you, repeatedly, to the exact question buyers ask. One page is a claim. A body of coverage, interviews, and content around the same subject is topical authority.
5. A weak branded search footprint
Nobody searches your name, and when they do, page one is thin. Branded demand and clean brand results, covered in Owning Page One, tell machines you are someone people check on.
6. No interview or media trail
No podcast transcripts, no episode pages, no third-party bios. That whole class of machine-readable evidence is missing. The fix is in Do Podcasts Help You Rank in AI Search?
7. A website machines struggle to read
Vague homepage copy, no schema, key facts locked in images or PDFs. The model visits and leaves uncertain. Plain language plus markup fixes this in days.
The order of operations
Fix the entity and the website first, they multiply everything else. Then build third-party mentions through placements and interviews. Then sustain topical depth. Most companies see the answer change within one to two quarters of consistent work, and you can watch it move with monthly monitoring.
