What Is Buzzsprout?
Buzzsprout is a paid podcast hosting service, operated by Higher Pixels, that stores your audio and video, publishes your RSS feed and helps list the show in podcast apps, with built-in statistics, transcripts and monetization tools.
Buzzsprout's pricing page says “over 111,813 podcasters” use it, a vendor figure (Buzzsprout pricing). Plans are priced by upload hours rather than storage or downloads, and every paid plan includes automatic transcripts that go into the RSS feed. Its terms name the operating company as Higher Pixels and say technical support “is only provided via email” (Buzzsprout Terms of Service).
What Is Spotify for Creators?
Spotify for Creators is Spotify's free podcast hosting and management platform (formerly Anchor, then Spotify for Podcasters), which publishes shows directly to Spotify and offers RSS distribution, analytics and Spotify-side monetization.
Spotify describes it as “a great way to host and distribute your show to Spotify and other platforms, learn about and interact with your audience, and monetize your show – all for free” (Spotify, Evolving creation tools). It is no longer a recording studio: Spotify removed its recording and editing tools, Music + Talk and voice messages, and now points creators to a Riverside integration. Shows hosted elsewhere can still claim their Spotify listing in Spotify for Creators for Spotify-only analytics (Getting your show on Spotify).
Buzzsprout vs Spotify for Creators: Pricing
Spotify for Creators charges nothing for hosting and takes its share from monetization instead. Buzzsprout publishes eight price points, from a free tier to $96 a month, priced by upload hours: the single-show Audio plan costs $18 a month, or $15 a month billed annually, for 6 hours of uploads a month. Pricing checked October 2026 on Buzzsprout's pricing page.
| Buzzsprout plan | Monthly | Per month, billed annually | Upload allowance and notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 2 upload hours a month; episodes hosted for 90 days; no add-ons or video distribution |
| Audio (1 podcast) | $18 | $15 | 6 hours a month (72 a year); unlimited episodes; advanced stats; website |
| Audio + Video (1 podcast) | $30 | $25 | 6 hours a month (72 a year); video to Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube at 1080p |
| Multi-Podcast Audio, up to 5 | $36 | $30 | 15 hours a month (180 a year), shared across shows |
| Multi-Podcast Audio, up to 10 | $78 | $65 | 35 hours a month (420 a year) |
| Multi-Podcast Audio + Video, up to 5 | $60 | $50 | 15 hours a month (180 a year) |
| Multi-Podcast Audio + Video, up to 10 | $96 | $80 | 35 hours a month (420 a year) |
| Archive | $5 | — | Keeps a show live with no upload allowance; one-off uploads $5 an hour |
Extra hours on monthly plans cost “$2/hour to $4/hour” depending on the plan (Buzzsprout, additional hours); unused hours do not roll over (upload allowance), and annual plans cannot buy extra hours. Two add-ons, Cohost AI (titles, descriptions, chapters and social posts) and Magic Mastering, are priced by plan; the pricing page does not list the amounts, and the help articles quote $5, $10 or $20 a month against plan prices of $19, $39 and $79 that no longer appear on the pricing page (Cohost AI; Magic Mastering). Confirm add-on prices in your account. Buzzsprout's terms say fees are billed in advance and are non-refundable (terms).
Spotify for Creators: hosting is free; there is no paid plan. Spotify's earnings come from monetization: a 50% share of ad revenue in the Partner Program (Spotify Partner Program) and fees on subscriptions, set out in its fee schedule and covered in Monetization below.

Buzzsprout also has a free tier (2 upload hours a month, 90-day hosting). Multi-Podcast plans for more shows or video cost more; see the table above.
Distribution: Where Your Show Appears
Spotify for Creators publishes a hosted show to Spotify automatically but says that to reach Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music or other apps “you need to submit your show to each service yourself”. Buzzsprout guides you through listing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube and more than a dozen other apps from its Directories page, so one upload reaches them all.
| Destination | Buzzsprout | Spotify for Creators |
|---|---|---|
| Spotify | Submitted from the Directories page; video via Enable Video after Spotify's approval | Automatic |
| Apple Podcasts | Listed through Buzzsprout's directory steps; video supported | Submit the RSS feed yourself; audio only |
| YouTube | Video and audio publishing on Audio + Video plans | Not offered as a destination |
| Other apps | Amazon Music, iHeartRadio, Podcast Index, Castbox, Overcast, Pocket Casts, Podcast Addict, Deezer, Listen Notes, Podchaser, Player FM, Castro, Goodpods, TrueFans | Submission guides for Amazon Music, Castbox, Goodpods, iHeartRadio, Overcast, Pocket Casts and RadioPublic |
| RSS feed | Created for the show; included in backups | Must be enabled in Settings > Availability; makes your email address public |
Sources: Buzzsprout, Distribution, Video Podcasting and adding video episodes to Spotify; Spotify, Distributing your show and Finding and enabling your RSS feed. Spotify also notes that episodes using songs from its catalog are “only available to listeners on Spotify”. Each platform's own requirements still apply; our guide to submitting a podcast to Apple, Spotify and YouTube covers them, and what Apple requires of a podcast explains the feed rules.
Video Podcasts
Buzzsprout's Audio + Video plans, from $25 a month billed annually, publish video to Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube at up to 1080p and send audio to other apps. Spotify for Creators hosts video free but says “Videos and video episodes are only available on Spotify”; listeners on other platforms get the audio only.
Spotify accepts MOV, MPG and MP4 files, has no file-size limit, caps files at 12 hours, and recommends H.264 at up to 25 Mbps for 1080p or 35 Mbps for 4K sources; video can only be uploaded on the web (Spotify, Publishing videos). On Buzzsprout, video reaches Spotify after you claim your Spotify listing and select “Enable Video”, which Spotify reviews (Buzzsprout help). Video revenue is a Spotify advantage: only its Partner Program pays for Premium video viewing.
Analytics
Buzzsprout counts downloads from your RSS feed across every app and says its stats are “IAB 2.2 Certified” with built-in bot filtering. Spotify for Creators reports Spotify plays (30 seconds or more), consumption and audience, adds RSS downloads from other apps for shows it hosts, and exports charts as CSV. The two products measure different things, so their totals are not comparable.
- Buzzsprout: downloads by episode, app and device, plus listen-duration and subscriber estimates (Buzzsprout, Podcast Statistics). For Spotify-specific and Apple-specific numbers, Buzzsprout points you to each platform's own dashboard after you claim your listings (Finding stats within directories).
- Spotify for Creators: a play is a stream of “at least 30 seconds on Spotify”; most analytics update every 15 minutes, some take up to 48 hours; benchmarks need at least 10 published episodes (Overview analytics; Downloading analytics). Spotify says it measures plays on Spotify and downloads elsewhere, and that history only starts when you switch to it (Data changes after switching).

Monetization
Spotify for Creators offers the larger potential payouts for shows with a big Spotify audience: its Partner Program shares 50% of ad revenue and adds Premium video revenue, once a show reaches 2,000 consumption hours and 1,000 listeners in 30 days. Buzzsprout's options start smaller: ads for other podcasts paying 0.7 to 1.4 cents per download from 1,000 downloads a month, and listener subscriptions with a 15% fee.
| Revenue stream | Buzzsprout | Spotify for Creators |
|---|---|---|
| Ads from the host | Buzzsprout Ads: promos for other podcasts; 0.7 to 1.4 cents per download; you approve each ad | Spotify Partner Program: 50% of revenue from Spotify-sold ads, on and off Spotify |
| Eligibility for ads | Paid plan; 5 episodes of 23+ minutes; 3 categories; 1,000 downloads in 30 days | Host on Spotify for Creators; eligible market; 3 episodes; 2,000 consumption hours and 1,000 listeners in 30 days |
| Paid subscriptions | Buzzsprout Subscriptions: $3 to $10 a month; 15% flat fee; premium, early-access, ad-free or subscriber-only shows | Subscriptions: 2 episodes and 100 listeners in 30 days; 5.5% processing plus FX fees until October 19, 2026; Memberships with a 10% platform fee from October 20, 2026 (subscribers migrated from Subscriptions keep the 5.5% fee plus FX until they cancel) |
| Your own sponsors | Dynamic Content: swap pre-, mid- and post-roll clips across episodes without re-uploading | Allowed under Spotify's terms and policies; Sponsorships tool for video episodes in the Partner Program |
| Video revenue | Not offered | Premium video revenue from Spotify Premium viewers in eligible markets |
| Payouts | Buzzsprout Wallet: apply to invoices or cash out to PayPal | Stripe or Spotify Payouts; Stripe payouts need at least US$10 |

Percent of subscription revenue kept by the platform, as published October 10, 2026
Source: Buzzsprout, Subscriptions page; Spotify for Creators, Fee schedule and cashing out.
Spotify's 10% Memberships fee covers processing, foreign exchange and payouts. Subscribers migrated from Spotify Subscriptions keep the 5.5% fee plus FX until they cancel.
Two caveats from Spotify's own pages. Its Partner Program article lists the threshold as 2,000 consumption hours “on Spotify”, while its monetization overview says “global consumption hours”; check the Monetize page in your account. And Spotify ended its Listener Support tips on January 2, 2025 (Listener Support has been removed). Spotify-sold ads play only on Spotify's desktop, iOS and Android apps, not the web player, smart speakers, cars or TVs (Spotify).
Ownership, Export and Leaving
Both hosts let you leave with a 301 redirect of your RSS feed, which keeps subscribers and app listings pointed at the new host. Buzzsprout's operator says it “claims no intellectual property rights” over your content and offers a one-click backup; Spotify says you keep ownership but grants itself a broad, sub-licensable license to your content for the maximum duration the rights allow.
- Buzzsprout: Settings > Podcast Settings > Backup downloads your episode audio, artwork, RSS feed and transcripts (Backing up your podcast). The Redirect tab places the 301 and downgrades the account to the free plan at the end of the cycle; Buzzsprout recommends staying active “for at least three weeks” (Moving to a new host). Deleting a podcast instead removes the feed, listings and analytics permanently (Cancel your account).
- Spotify for Creators: episodes download one at a time on the web (Downloading episodes); the redirect is in Settings, “can take up to 7 days”, and is not possible from the mobile app (Switching away with a 301 redirect). Deleting the account permanently deletes episodes, analytics and artwork, so back them up first (Deleting your account).
- License terms: Spotify's terms (last updated December 8, 2025) say “You retain ownership of your User Content” but grant Spotify a “non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, fully paid, worldwide license” that includes creating derivative works and transcribing (Spotify for Creators Terms). Buzzsprout's terms waive moral rights and attribution claims against Higher Pixels for submitted episodes (Buzzsprout terms).
Moving in either direction works the same way: Buzzsprout's help center gives steps to redirect a feed from Spotify for Creators (Redirect podcast feed). Keep transcripts with your files; our guide to adding transcripts to your podcast explains where each app reads them.
Accounts and Eligibility
Buzzsprout requires account holders to be 18 or older and to give a full legal name; Spotify for Creators accepts users from 13, with parental or guardian consent under the age of majority. Spotify's monetization features also depend on country: its Partner Program covers 19 markets now and adds more on October 20, 2026.

Who Should Choose Buzzsprout?
Choose Buzzsprout if: your show represents a company or a professional brand, you want listeners on Apple Podcasts, YouTube and Spotify alike, and you want sponsor-ready download stats and a clean exit.
Avoid Buzzsprout if: you cannot pay for hosting, upload far more than 6 hours a month on a single show, or your audience is almost entirely on Spotify.
Best for: brand, company and independent shows that need every major app.
Starting price: $15 a month billed annually, or $18 monthly; free plan with 90-day hosting (checked October 2026).

Verdict: the better host for reach and ownership.
Who Should Choose Spotify for Creators?
Choose Spotify for Creators if: you need free hosting, most of your listeners are on Spotify, and you plan to grow into the Partner Program or Spotify Subscriptions.
Avoid Spotify for Creators if: you need video on YouTube or Apple Podcasts, want your email out of the public feed, or want a single host to handle listings in other apps for you.
Best for: Spotify-first creators with no hosting budget.
Starting price: free (checked October 2026).
Primary strength: native Spotify publishing and Spotify-side monetization.
Main limitation: video stays on Spotify, and other apps must be submitted by hand.
Verdict: the better host when Spotify is the audience and cost is the constraint.

Final Verdict: Buzzsprout or Spotify for Creators?
For a company or professional podcast, Buzzsprout is the better host in 2026: it handles listings across the major apps, publishes video to Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube, prints its prices and makes leaving easy. Spotify for Creators is the better choice when the budget is zero and the audience is on Spotify, because hosting is free and its Partner Program pays half of ad revenue plus Premium video revenue once a show qualifies. The decision depends on three things: whether you need listeners beyond Spotify, whether you publish video, and whether $15 to $30 a month is worth predictable reach. Neither host can promise an audience.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Spotify for Creators really free?
Yes for hosting. Spotify describes it as a way to host and distribute your show, learn about your audience and monetize, all for free. Spotify takes a share of what you earn instead: half of ad revenue in the Spotify Partner Program, and fees on paid subscriptions, which become a 10% platform fee for Memberships from October 20, 2026.
How much does Buzzsprout cost in October 2026?
Buzzsprout's pricing page lists a free plan, Audio at $18 a month ($15 billed annually), Audio + Video at $30 ($25 annually) and Multi-Podcast plans from $36 a month ($30 annually) for up to five shows. Monthly plans include 6 hours of uploads; extra hours cost $2 to $4 each.
Will my podcast be on Apple Podcasts if I host on Spotify for Creators?
Only if you submit it. Spotify publishes shows it hosts to Spotify automatically, but says you must enable your RSS feed and submit to Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music and other apps yourself. Enabling the feed makes your email address public in it. Buzzsprout's distribution page walks you through listing on more than 15 directories.
Can I publish a video podcast to YouTube from either host?
From Buzzsprout, yes: its Audio + Video plans publish video to Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube. Spotify for Creators says videos and video episodes are only available on Spotify, and other platforms receive the audio only.
Can I move my podcast away from Buzzsprout or Spotify for Creators?
Yes. Both document a 301 redirect of your RSS feed to a new host. Buzzsprout recommends keeping the account active for at least three weeks after redirecting; Spotify says the redirect can take up to 7 days and advises waiting a week before deleting the account. Back up audio, artwork and analytics first.
Who owns my podcast on each platform?
You do. Buzzsprout's operator, Higher Pixels, says it claims no intellectual property rights over content you upload. Spotify says you retain ownership but grants itself a broad non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license, including rights to transcribe and create derivative works, for the maximum duration the rights allow.
How many listeners do I need to earn money?
Spotify's Partner Program requires at least 3 episodes, 2,000 consumption hours and 1,000 unique listeners or viewers in the last 30 days; Subscriptions need 2 episodes and 100 listeners. Buzzsprout Ads requires a paid plan, 5 episodes of at least 23 minutes and 1,000 downloads in 30 days.
Are Buzzsprout's download stats comparable with Spotify's plays?
Not directly. Buzzsprout counts downloads from your RSS feed and says it is IAB 2.2 certified. Spotify for Creators reports plays of at least 30 seconds on Spotify, plus RSS downloads for shows it hosts, and its Partner Program counts streams of 60 seconds or more. Compare like with like.
Does Spotify for Creators still have recording and editing tools?
No. Spotify says recording and editing tools, background music, Music + Talk and voice messages were removed, and that you now upload finished audio or video or record through its Riverside integration on the web. Buzzsprout also expects finished files, with paid add-ons for mastering and AI-written episode details.
