Meltwater vs Muck Rack: Which Is Better for Media Monitoring and Journalist Outreach in 2026?

Muck Rack is the better choice for a PR team whose main job is pitching journalists: pitches go out from your own Gmail or Outlook account, are matched to the coverage they produce, and users rate it higher on Capterra. Meltwater wins when monitoring is the bigger job: by its own counts it covers broadcast in all 210 U.S. media markets, 400,000+ print titles and 20+ social networks, and it adds an API and MCP server on its Enterprise and Agency plans. Neither publishes prices, and Meltwater's standard contract runs 36 months.

What Is Meltwater?

Meltwater is a media, social and consumer intelligence company whose platform combines media monitoring, social listening, a journalist database with email outreach, press release distribution, influencer marketing and tracking of brand mentions in AI assistants.

Meltwater says it started in 2001 in Oslo as “one of the first online media monitoring companies” and now counts 27,000 customers, 2,300 people and 50 offices (Meltwater, Our Story). Altor, one of its owners, puts its headquarters in San Francisco (Altor). The platform is sold in modules: its pricing page lists Media Intelligence, Social Listening, AI Visibility Tracking and Media Relations on every plan, with Influencer Marketing from Pro upward (Meltwater pricing). Its AI assistant is called Mira.

What Is Muck Rack?

Muck Rack is a PR software platform that combines a journalist and outlet database, email pitching, media monitoring and coverage reporting, and gives journalists free profiles and tools.

Muck Rack says it was founded in 2009 and launched its software platform in 2011 (Muck Rack, About). It describes itself as “the AI communications platform”; journalists never pay, and PR teams buy subscriptions (Muck Rack pricing FAQ) billed annually under its terms. For how it compares with Cision, see Muck Rack vs Cision.

Monitoring Coverage: News, Broadcast, Print, Podcasts and Social

Meltwater describes broader monitoring than Muck Rack, including broadcast across all 210 U.S. media markets, 400,000+ print titles and more than 20 social networks; Muck Rack covers more podcasts by its own count (75,000+ against 20,000+) but sells broadcast and social listening as paid add-ons. All figures are the vendors' own, checked October 7, 2026.

Meltwater
20,000+

Source: Muck Rack, Media Monitoring page (FAQ); Meltwater, Media Monitoring page, read October 10, 2026.

Vendor claims, not independently verified; neither vendor explains how it counts a podcast. Meltwater also claims 400,000+ print titles and 200M+ online publications.

What the counts leave out. Meltwater's pages do not say which channels each plan includes; its pricing FAQ says the quote depends on “the breadth of sources and regions you want to monitor” (Meltwater pricing). Its help center adds that Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Threads require you to connect an account before listening works, and that “Availability still depends on your Meltwater subscription” (Meltwater help, social listening setup). Muck Rack's own pages also disagree on what is included, as our Muck Rack vs Cision comparison explains; its add-ons article treats broadcast as paid. Get the channel list for your plan in writing from either vendor.

If you need web mentions of one brand and nothing else, test the free route first: how to monitor brand mentions with Google Alerts. Meltwater's own monitoring FAQ makes the same point in reverse, saying free alerts miss social, broadcast, print and podcasts.

Journalist Database and Pitching

Meltwater says its database holds 800,000+ journalists and media contacts kept current by 90+ research analysts and AI crawlers, with outreach sent from the platform; Muck Rack pairs an editorial team of 100+ with journalist-maintained profiles and sends pitches from your own Gmail or Outlook account, matching them to the coverage they produce.

Meltwater

  • Size and upkeep: 800,000+ “journalists and media contacts” across North America, EMEA and APAC, including freelancers and contributors; “critical changes” such as moves between outlets are reflected “within 24 to 48 hours” (Meltwater, Media Database).
  • Bounce rate claim: Meltwater says its database “maintains a bounce rate of around 7 to 8%”. It does not publish how that figure is measured, so treat it as a vendor claim to test on your own lists.
  • Outreach: natural-language journalist search, AI-assisted list building, personalized or mass email from the platform, open, click and bounce tracking, sending from your own domain, and relationship history (Meltwater, Media Relations). Its May 2026 release added Journalist Relevance Matching and AI-Powered Pitch Personalization (Meltwater, 2026 Mid-Year Release).
  • Your obligations: Meltwater's product terms make the customer an “Independent Controller” of journalist personal data and bar using it for “general marketing purposes” (Meltwater Product Specific Terms).

Muck Rack

  • Upkeep: an editorial team of more than 100 people plus journalists who claim and edit their own free profiles; Muck Rack aims “to review every listing annually” (Muck Rack, Media Database).
  • Sending: Email Integration puts your address in the From field and, Muck Rack says, “only uses a scope to send emails” (Muck Rack help, Email Integration).
  • Attribution: coverage from a pitch is “automatically detected and confirmed as Pitch Placements” (Muck Rack, Media Pitching).

How to read the size claims: Meltwater's 800,000 is global and counts media contacts, not only staff reporters; for scale, the U.S. government counts about 47,100 news analysts, reporters and journalists (see how many journalists there are). Ask both vendors for a sample list on your beat and check it against recent bylines.

Analytics and Reporting

Both platforms build dashboards and reports with reach, sentiment and share of voice; Meltwater adds scheduled PowerPoint and PDF reports, white-label reporting for agencies and dashboards that executives can open from a link without logging in, while Muck Rack ties reports to its pitch records.

  • Meltwater: real-time dashboards across earned and social media, competitor benchmarking, automated report scheduling and delivery, AI-generated executive summaries, custom KPIs and data exports to BI tools (Meltwater, PR Reporting). Plans differ: Starter lists “Pre-built dashboards” and Pro lists “Custom dashboards & reporting” (Meltwater pricing).
  • Muck Rack: coverage reports, dashboards (“Template only” on Starter and Standard, “Custom” on Premier), newsletters and a customizable PR Hit Score; metrics include impressions, reach, AVE, share of voice and sentiment (Muck Rack pricing; Muck Rack, Reporting).

Reach and AVE are modeled figures. Report pitch-to-placement rate and referral traffic alongside them.

AI Features (Vendor Claims)

Meltwater's AI is built around its Mira assistant, its GenAI Lens tracker for brand mentions in AI assistants, and an MCP server that lets outside AI tools query and act in the platform; Muck Rack offers a Media List Agent, AI search and relevance filtering, PressPal.ai drafting and Generative Pulse. We did not test output quality.

  • Meltwater Mira: Meltwater says Mira has handled more than 1.3 million customer prompts and now runs as an agent in Slack and on mobile (Meltwater, Mid-Year Release).
  • Meltwater GenAI Lens: tracks brand visibility in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, DeepSeek, Llama, Claude, Gemini and Grok, with data “refreshed on a 24-hour cycle”, although the same page's FAQ says “every 48 hours” (Meltwater, GenAI Lens).
  • Meltwater MCP: hosted “since June 2025” and, from July 8, 2026, able to create reports and track alerts inside the platform; generally available to customers (Meltwater MCP press release).
  • Muck Rack: Media List Agent, AI Search Assistant and AI Visibility Badges (Muck Rack, Media Database); Curation Engine relevance filtering (Muck Rack, Monitoring); Generative Pulse for how ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude describe your brand (Muck Rack, AI).

Contract fine print: Meltwater's product terms say AI outputs “may contain errors”, carry no accuracy warranty and must be checked by the customer, and forbid using content from its API or CSV exports to “train, fine-tune, ground or develop” AI systems (Meltwater Product Specific Terms). Its database page says “customer data is never used to train AI models” (Meltwater). To run your own free check of AI answers first, see how to check what AI says about your company.

Integrations and API

Meltwater documents a wider set of data integrations, with APIs for listening, social analytics, AI visibility and imported content plus an MCP server, but its pricing table shows API and MCP access only on Enterprise and Agency plans; Muck Rack documents direct Gmail and Outlook sending, Slack, Google Analytics and SSO, with its API sold as a Premier add-on.

Ownership and Corporate Status

Meltwater has been privately owned since August 9, 2023 by MW Investment B.V., an entity jointly controlled by Marlin Equity Partners and Altor, and was delisted from the Oslo Stock Exchange; Muck Rack is a privately held company that Susquehanna Growth Equity lists as a 2022 investment.

  • Meltwater: its press release says the offer was announced on January 18, 2023 and completed on August 9, 2023, with shareholders offered NOK 18.00 per share in cash, shares in the buyer or both (Meltwater press release). Altor lists its first Meltwater investment as October 2012 and says Meltwater “was listed in Norway in 2020” (Altor); Marlin lists Meltwater as a current holding (Marlin Equity Partners). Meltwater lists its Board of Directors under MW Investment B.V., which includes representatives of both firms (Meltwater, Our Story). U.S. customers contract with Meltwater News US Inc. (Meltwater terms).
  • Muck Rack: the contracting entity is Muck Rack, LLC, a Delaware company (Muck Rack terms). Susquehanna Growth Equity lists it as a 2022 investment and quotes co-founder Greg Galant on “13 years of bootstrapping” before that (SGE).

Private-equity ownership does not by itself change the product, but it matters at renewal: both vendors can change prices at each term, so negotiate caps before you sign.

Support and Onboarding

Meltwater says every customer gets 24/7 support by live chat and email, with Premium Support on Enterprise plans or as an add-on; Muck Rack publishes support levels by plan, from a pooled success team on Starter to a named success manager on Standard and Premier. On Capterra, customer-service ratings are 4.1 for Muck Rack and 3.7 for Meltwater.

  • Meltwater: “24/7 multi-channel support for all customers”, plus a Help Center, Meltwater Academy and the mCommunity forum (Meltwater pricing FAQ); its plan table marks support as Standard on Starter, Pro and Agency and Premium on Enterprise, and Premium Support can be added at renewal (Meltwater help). Its database page cites typical setup in 2–4 weeks and a dedicated customer success manager (Meltwater). Its SLA targets 99.8% monthly uptime, with a credit of 2% of the monthly fee if Meltwater does not use commercially reasonable efforts to meet it, and a weekly maintenance window on Saturdays from 12:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. EST (Meltwater SLA).
  • Muck Rack: live chat with a target response time that differs by plan, self-led or instructor-led onboarding, and a pooled or named success manager depending on plan (Muck Rack pricing).

Contract Terms

Both vendors bill in advance with no refunds, but Meltwater's published terms are stricter on renewal: subscriptions renew automatically for the same length at then-current prices unless you give written notice 60 days before the term ends, and its help center describes a 36-month standard term with a rate increase at each annual renewal.

  • Meltwater U.S. terms (version of April 5, 2025): customers are invoiced “for the full amount due in advance” and pay within 14 days; payment obligations are “non-cancellable” and fees “non-refundable”; renewal is automatic “at Meltwater's then-current prices” without 60 days' written notice; and “Any special pricing and payment terms are only applicable to the Initial Term” (Meltwater General Terms and Conditions, Meltwater News US Inc.). Other regions have their own terms (Meltwater terms by region).
  • Meltwater help center: “Our standard contract term length is 36 months with our minimum contract length is 12 months”, and customers “can expect a rate increase at point of each annual renewal”; access is suspended after the end date if you do not renew (Meltwater, Renewing Your Subscription).
  • Muck Rack terms (effective March 12, 2025): subscriptions are billed annually in advance and are non-refundable for the period; you cancel an auto-renewing plan by emailing your Customer Success Manager; multi-year fees remain due if cancelled mid-term; price changes take effect at the next period (Muck Rack terms).

Several Meltwater reviewers on Capterra complain that they were renewed after missing the notice window. Whichever vendor you choose, write the end date, notice deadline and maximum renewal increase into the order form.

Where Meltwater Wins

  • Monitoring breadth: broadcast, print, podcasts and 20+ social networks, including Chinese platforms, described across its monitoring products.
  • Data access: a developer portal with several APIs and an MCP server for AI assistants (Enterprise and Agency).
  • One vendor for more jobs: press release distribution, influencer marketing and social publishing alongside PR.
  • Uptime commitment: a published 99.8% SLA with service credits.

Where Muck Rack Wins

  • Pitching workflow: sending from your own mailbox with a send-only scope, and automatic matching of pitches to coverage.
  • Database model: journalist-maintained profiles on top of an editorial team.
  • Podcasts: 75,000+ monitored by its count, against Meltwater's 20,000+.
  • Commitment and ratings: annual terms without a 36-month standard, and higher Capterra ratings for ease of use and customer service.

Who Should Choose Meltwater?

Choose Meltwater if: monitoring and social listening are the bigger part of the job, you track several countries or broadcast markets, or you want media data in your own BI tools or AI assistants.

Avoid Meltwater if: you cannot commit beyond 12 months, you will not track renewal deadlines, or you mainly need a pitching tool.

Best for: communications and marketing teams with heavy monitoring and social listening needs.
Starting price: not published; four plans, quote-based.
Primary strength: breadth of monitored channels and data access through API and MCP.
Main limitation: long standard contracts with automatic renewal at then-current prices.
Verdict: the better choice when monitoring outweighs outreach.

Who Should Choose Muck Rack?

Choose Muck Rack if: your team spends most of its time building lists, pitching and proving which pitches became coverage, mainly in English-language media.

Avoid Muck Rack if: TV, radio and social listening are core requirements and you cannot budget for add-ons, or you pitch only occasionally.

Best for: in-house and agency teams focused on earned-media outreach.
Starting price: not published; three plans, quote-based.
Primary strength: inbox-based pitching and pitch-to-placement tracking.
Main limitation: broadcast, social listening and the API cost extra.
Verdict: the better default for outreach-led PR.

Final Verdict: Meltwater or Muck Rack?

For a PR team whose main goal is earning coverage through journalist outreach, Muck Rack is the better choice: its database, inbox-based pitching and pitch-to-placement tracking are built around that job, its published terms bill annually and set no 36-month standard term, and users rate it higher. Meltwater is the better choice when monitoring is the larger requirement, especially broadcast, print and social across several markets, or when you want the data in your own tools through its API and MCP server. The decision depends on three things: how much of the budget goes to monitoring versus outreach, which channels and markets you must cover, and whether you can accept a multi-year term with automatic renewal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who owns Meltwater?

Meltwater is privately owned by MW Investment B.V., an entity jointly controlled by Marlin Equity Partners and Altor. Meltwater's own press release says the take-private acquisition was completed on August 9, 2023, after an offer announced on January 18, 2023. Altor lists its first investment in Meltwater as October 2012, and Marlin lists Meltwater as a current portfolio company.

Is Meltwater still listed on the Oslo stock exchange?

No. Meltwater's August 9, 2023 press release says the company was delisted from trading on the Oslo Stock Exchange as a result of the MW Investment B.V. transaction. Altor's portfolio page says Meltwater was listed in Norway in 2020, so it was publicly traded for about three years.

How much does Meltwater cost in 2026?

Meltwater does not publish prices. Its pricing page lists Starter, Pro, Enterprise and Agency plans, all marked Contact Sales, and says quotes depend on sources and regions monitored, data volume, number of users, integrations, onboarding and support needs, and contract terms. It offers a guided demo but no self-serve free trial.

How much does Muck Rack cost in 2026?

Muck Rack does not publish prices either. Its pricing page lists Starter, Standard and Premier plans for brands and agencies, all marked Contact us, and says pricing depends on factors including the number of users. Its terms say subscriptions are billed annually in advance and are non-refundable for the period purchased.

How do I stop a Meltwater contract from auto-renewing?

Give written notice of non-renewal at least 60 days before the end of the current term. Meltwater's U.S. General Terms and Conditions renew subscriptions automatically for the same length at Meltwater's then-current prices unless either party gives that notice, and its help center repeats the 60-day rule. Put the date in your calendar when you sign.

How long is a Meltwater contract?

Meltwater's help center says its standard contract term is 36 months and the minimum is 12 months, and that customers can expect a rate increase at each annual renewal. Its pricing FAQ says most agreements are annual with a 12-month minimum. Ask for the term, renewal notice period and any increase cap in the order confirmation.

Does Meltwater or Muck Rack include press release distribution?

Meltwater sells press release distribution in the same platform, priced per release or in credit bundles, with no per-word fees and no minimum commitment according to its product page. Muck Rack does not run a newswire; it focuses on the database, pitching, monitoring and reporting.

Which tool do users rate higher?

On Capterra, checked October 7, 2026, Muck Rack averages 4.2 out of 5 from 25 reviews, with 4.2 for ease of use and 4.1 for customer service. Meltwater averages 4.0 from 96 reviews, with 4.0 for ease of use and 3.7 for customer service. Both samples are small and include reviews several years old.

Can either platform show what ChatGPT says about my brand?

Both sell it. Meltwater's GenAI Lens tracks brand mentions in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Claude, Gemini, Grok and others, refreshed every 24 to 48 hours by its own page. Muck Rack's Generative Pulse tracks how ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude describe your brand. You can also run a free manual check before buying either.

How We Compared Meltwater and Muck Rack

Criteria: monitoring coverage, journalist database and pitching, analytics and reporting, AI features, integrations and API, pricing, contract terms, support and ownership. Dates: every page was read on October 7, 2026. Sources: each vendor's product, pricing, help-center, developer and legal pages; Meltwater's press releases; Altor's, Marlin Equity Partners' and Susquehanna Growth Equity's portfolio pages; and Capterra user ratings. Muck Rack facts were checked on its own pages the same day for our Muck Rack vs Cision comparison and are reused here unchanged. We did not sign in to either product.

Limitations: we did not test either platform hands-on, request quotes or measure database accuracy. Source counts, bounce rates and AI capabilities are vendor claims. Meltwater's pages give two different figures for its monitored news coverage: 200M+ online publications (monitoring page) and 270,000+ news sources (media database page). GenAI Lens's page gives both a 24-hour and a 48-hour refresh cycle. Capterra samples are small and some Meltwater reviews describe products it acquired. Enterprise order forms can override published terms.
