What Is Cision?
Cision is a communications software and services company whose main PR platform, CisionOne, bundles a media database, outreach, media monitoring, analytics and social listening; it also owns PR Newswire, Brandwatch and Trajaan.
Cision traces its origins to 1876 and groups its brands as PR Newswire, CisionOne, Brandwatch and Trajaan (Cision, About). PR Newswire says it was “acquired by Cision in 2015” (PR Newswire, About). In this comparison, “Cision” means CisionOne unless stated. Cision still supports older platforms, including Cision Communications Cloud, a “Nextgen” platform, Cision PR Edition and CisionPoint (Cision, Contact), so ask which one a quote covers. For how Cision compares with an outreach-first tool, see our Muck Rack vs Cision comparison.
What Is Meltwater?
Meltwater is a media, social and consumer intelligence company whose platform combines media monitoring, social listening, a journalist database with email outreach, press release distribution, influencer marketing and tracking of brand mentions in AI assistants.
Meltwater says it started in 2001 in Oslo and now counts 27,000 customers, 2,300 people and 50 offices (Meltwater, Our Story). Its pricing page lists Media Intelligence, Social Listening, AI Visibility Tracking and Media Relations on every plan, with Influencer Marketing on Enterprise and Agency plan cards (Meltwater pricing). Its AI assistant is called Mira. Our Meltwater vs Muck Rack comparison covers how it stacks up against an outreach-led tool.
Cision vs Meltwater: Pricing
Cision and Meltwater both sell on quotes only: Cision's CisionOne pricing page says it will “recommend the best package and provide pricing during a short consultation”, and Meltwater's pricing FAQ says it “uses tailored pricing rather than a one-size-fits-all list”. The table shows what each publishes instead of a price. Pricing checked October 2026.

We did not request quotes and do not repeat third-party price estimates, because neither vendor confirms them.
Monitoring Coverage: News, Print, Broadcast, Podcasts and Social
Meltwater describes wider social coverage than Cision, with 20+ networks including TikTok, LinkedIn, Threads and Chinese platforms, and broadcast across all 210 U.S. media markets; Cision's CisionOne cites more podcasts (60,000+ against 20,000+) and names 10,000+ paywalled titles. All figures are the vendors' own, read October 9, 2026, and several use different units.
| Channel | Cision (CisionOne) | Meltwater |
|---|---|---|
| Online news | “hundreds of thousands of news sources” | “200M+ online publications” including blogs, forums and review sites; its database page cites 270,000+ news sources |
| Print and paywalled | “leading global print publications” and “over 10,000 premium paywalled titles” | “400,000+ newspapers, magazines, and trade publications” |
| TV and radio | “3000+ TV and radio stations” | “all 210 US media markets and thousands of TV and radio stations worldwide” |

Number of podcasts each vendor says it monitors, as stated on product pages, October 10, 2026
Source: Cision, Media Monitoring page; Meltwater, Media Monitoring page.
Both figures are lower bounds stated by the vendors and were not independently verified. Neither vendor says which packages include podcast monitoring.
Neither vendor says which channels each package includes. Cision's packages separate “Media Monitoring” from “Media Monitoring + Social”; Meltwater's FAQ says quotes depend on “the breadth of sources and regions you want to monitor”. Licensing limits also travel with the content: Cision's Monitoring appendix restricts broadcast clips to internal use and caps LexisNexis content shared with non-users at 25 recipients a month before extra fees (Cision appendix). Get the channel list and sharing rules for your plan in writing. If you need web mentions of one brand and nothing else, test the free route in how to monitor brand mentions with Google Alerts first.
Journalist Database and Outreach
Meltwater says its database holds 800,000+ journalists and media contacts, kept current by 90+ research analysts and AI crawlers; Cision says CisionOne holds over 500,000 media profiles across 225 countries and territories, curated by an in-house media research team. Both send pitches from the platform and track opens and clicks, so the practical test is accuracy on your own beat.
- Cision: describes a “human-curated database of verified journalists and media outlets” (Cision, Journalist Outreach), so the 500,000 count includes outlets. Its Media Database appendix says that if a user connects an email account, Cision or its providers “will search, index and copy email messages” to show them in the platform, and bars using its media data to train generative AI models without consent (Media Database Service Appendix).
- Meltwater: 800,000+ “journalists and media contacts” including freelancers; it says “critical changes” such as job moves are reflected “within 24 to 48 hours” and that the database “maintains a bounce rate of around 7 to 8%”, without publishing how that is measured (Meltwater, Media Database). Its product terms make the customer an independent controller of journalist personal data (Product Specific Terms).
Both global figures include contacts well beyond U.S. staff reporters. Ask each vendor for a 50-contact sample on your beat and check it against recent bylines.
Reporting and Analytics
Cision's Instant Insights and Meltwater's PR Reporting both turn monitored coverage into dashboards with reach, sentiment and share of voice; Meltwater adds scheduled report delivery, AI-generated executive summaries and white-label reports for agencies, while Cision's contract bars sharing monitoring reports with third parties without written consent. Neither documents a method that turns reach into audience.
Cision says Instant Insights builds dashboards from “dozens of metrics” and exports branded reports (Cision, Instant Insights). Meltwater lists real-time dashboards, competitor benchmarking, automated scheduling and data exports to BI tools (Meltwater, PR Reporting); its plan cards list “Pre-built dashboards” on Starter and “Custom dashboards & reporting” on Pro. If share of voice is the headline metric, agree the formula first; our explainer on what share of voice is sets out the definitions.
AI Features and AI-Visibility Tracking (Vendor Claims)
Both Cision and Meltwater now sell tracking of how AI assistants describe a brand: Meltwater's GenAI Lens lists nine AI systems including ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode, and Cision added AI Visibility dashboards to CisionOne on July 14, 2026, covering “nine of the world's most-used AI platforms”. Everything in this section is the vendors' description; we did not test output quality.
- Meltwater: GenAI Lens covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, DeepSeek, Llama, Claude, Gemini and Grok, with data “refreshed on a 24-hour cycle” (GenAI Lens). Meltwater says it has hosted an MCP server “since June 2025” and made it generally available to customers on July 8, 2026 (Meltwater MCP release). Its product terms say AI outputs “may contain errors” and must be checked by the customer (Product Specific Terms).
- Cision: AI Visibility Dashboards are “powered by Trajaan”, show which journalists, outlets and domains AI answers cite, and link to those journalists' outreach profiles (Cision, AI Visibility); the launch release names ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude (Cision release, July 14, 2026). Monitoring runs on a metered “answer allowance”, and AI Coverage Analysis is a paid add-on.
Both products sample prompts; neither sees every answer a user receives. To see what such a tracker would measure before paying for one, run the manual checks in how to check what AI says about your company.
Integrations and API
Meltwater documents broader data access than Cision, with several APIs and a hosted MCP server for AI assistants, though its pricing table shows API and MCP access only on Enterprise and Agency plans; Cision documents more identity tooling, including SCIM provisioning with Okta and Azure, and a monitoring API limited to 10 requests a minute.
| Integration | Cision (CisionOne) | Meltwater |
|---|---|---|
| Chat and collaboration | Slack and Microsoft Teams alerts | Mira agent in Slack; Microsoft Teams |
| CRM and BI | Google Analytics (multiple accounts) | Salesforce; exports and APIs to BI tools |
| API | Mention Streams data in JSON or CSV; up to 10 requests a minute | Listening, social analytics, AI visibility and other APIs; Enterprise and Agency plans |
| AI assistants | Not documented in the pages we read | Hosted MCP server, generally available since July 8, 2026 |
| Identity | Okta and Azure SAML SSO; SCIM provisioning | Governance, workflows and permissions listed on Enterprise and Agency |
| Mobile | iOS and Android apps | Meltwater Mobile and Engage apps |
Sources: CisionOne help API and Settings collection and the Media Monitoring page (mobile apps); Meltwater Developer Portal, pricing plan table, Media Database and MCP release. Meltwater's product terms cap CSV exports at 30,000 documents a month unless agreed (Product Specific Terms).
Press Release Distribution
Meltwater sells press release distribution inside its own platform, with “no per-word fees”, flat per-release pricing, volume bundles and “No minimum commitments”; Cision's route is PR Newswire, a separate wire service in the same corporate group that Cision acquired in 2015. Neither product page publishes a release price.
Meltwater lists “Unlimited word count per release”, 24- and 48-hour pickup reports and credits “valid for 12 months” (Meltwater, Press Distribution). Cision's site lists PR Newswire under “PR Distribution & Placement” (Cision). If distribution is part of the decision, compare the wire on its own terms: see PR Newswire vs Business Wire.
Ownership and Corporate Status
Cision is owned by Platinum Equity, which took it private in January 2020 and still lists it as an active investment; Meltwater has been owned since August 9, 2023 by MW Investment B.V., an entity jointly controlled by Marlin Equity Partners and Altor. Both are private, so neither publishes audited results. We checked each owner's page on October 9, 2026.
- Cision: Platinum Equity's portfolio page lists Cision as a “Public to Private Transaction” with status “Active”, “Acquired from public shareholders in January 2020”, plus Brandwatch (June 2021) and Streem (April 2022) as add-on acquisitions (Platinum Equity). Cision's press-release list, read the same day, shows product and research news through August 2026 and no change of ownership (Cision press releases).
- Meltwater: its press release says the offer by MW Investment B.V., “jointly controlled by Marlin Equity Partners and Altor”, completed on August 9, 2023 and the shares were delisted from the Oslo Stock Exchange (Meltwater press release). Marlin lists Meltwater as “Current” (Marlin Equity Partners); Altor lists an investment date of October 2012 and Funds III and VI (Altor). Meltwater lists its board under MW Investment B.V. (Our Story). U.S. customers contract with Meltwater News US Inc. (Meltwater terms).
Ownership matters at renewal and in data sharing. Cision's forms say submitted details may reach “Cision and its affiliated brands, including Brandwatch, CisionOne, and PR Newswire” (CisionOne).
Support and Service Levels
Meltwater publishes more about service than Cision: “24/7 multi-channel support for all customers”, a 99.8% monthly uptime target and Premium Support on Enterprise plans; Cision documents in-app chat, help sites, account managers and training, plus average monthly availability of at least 99.5% in its service appendices, but not support tiers.
Meltwater's SLA offers a credit of 2% of the monthly fee if it does not use commercially reasonable efforts to meet the target, and sets a weekly maintenance window on Saturdays (Meltwater SLA); its pricing FAQ lists live chat, email, a Help Center, Meltwater Academy and the mCommunity forum. Cision's CisionOne users “Log in and use the Chat feature” (Cision, Contact) and its appendix promises “unlimited access to Supplier's online product support center” (Monitoring appendix). On Capterra, read October 7, 2026, customer-service scores were 3.7 for both (Cision; Meltwater).
Contract Terms and Data
Both vendors bill in advance with no refunds, but Meltwater's published terms are stricter on renewal: its help center describes a 36-month standard term, automatic renewal unless cancelled 60 days before the end, and a rate increase at each annual renewal. Cision's master agreement leaves term and renewal to the signed order and requires deleting monitoring data when the contract ends.
- Meltwater: “Our standard contract term length is 36 months with our minimum contract length is 12 months”, and customers “can expect a rate increase at point of each annual renewal” (Meltwater help). Its U.S. General Terms (April 5, 2025) renew subscriptions “at Meltwater's then-current prices” without 60 days' written notice (Meltwater GTC). Its pricing FAQ adds that “most partnerships are structured on annual agreements, with a minimum contract length of 12 months”.
- Cision: “All fees are invoiced annually in advance, and are non-cancellable and non-refundable unless stated otherwise on an Order” (master agreement updated September 25, 2025). At the end of a monitoring contract, the customer “shall delete or destroy all Supplier Data that it has obtained, excluding Reports” and certify it (Cision MSA; Monitoring appendix, February 23, 2026).
Before signing either, write the end date, notice deadline, maximum renewal increase and export rights into the order form.
Where Cision Wins
- Distribution in the same group: PR Newswire, plus Brandwatch for consumer research.
- Podcast monitoring: 60,000+ podcasts by its count, against Meltwater's 20,000+.
- Paywalled titles: names 10,000+ premium paywalled titles in its monitoring.
- Published terms: its master agreement sets no multi-year standard term or auto-renewal clause; both are left to the order, whereas Meltwater's help center describes a 36-month standard.
- Identity management: SCIM provisioning with Okta and Azure.
Where Meltwater Wins
- Social breadth: 20+ networks, including TikTok, LinkedIn, Threads, WeChat, Weibo and LINE.
- Data access: several APIs and a generally available MCP server (Enterprise and Agency).
- Distribution in the platform: per-release or bundle pricing with no minimum commitment.
- Published service levels: 24/7 support for all customers and a 99.8% uptime SLA with credits.
- User ratings: slightly higher Capterra overall and ease-of-use scores.
Who Should Choose Cision?
Choose Cision if: you already distribute releases through PR Newswire, podcasts and paywalled print matter to your coverage, or you want to negotiate an annual contract without starting from a multi-year standard.
Avoid Cision if: you need listening on TikTok, LinkedIn or Chinese social platforms, which its social listening page does not list, want an API for AI assistants, or need support levels in writing before a sales call.
Best for: communications teams that pair monitoring with wire distribution.
Starting price: not published; four CisionOne packages, quote-based (checked October 2026).
Primary strength: one corporate group for media data, PR Newswire distribution and Brandwatch research.
Main limitation: narrower published social coverage and several legacy platforms still in use.
Verdict: the better choice when distribution and podcast monitoring drive the purchase.
Who Should Choose Meltwater?
Choose Meltwater if: social listening is a large part of the job, you monitor several countries, or you want monitoring data in BI tools and AI assistants.
Avoid Meltwater if: you cannot commit to at least 12 months, will not track a 60-day renewal deadline, or mainly need podcast monitoring.
Best for: teams with heavy social and multi-market monitoring needs.
Starting price: not published; four plans, quote-based (checked October 2026).
Primary strength: breadth of social networks and data access through API and MCP.
Main limitation: a 36-month standard term with automatic renewal at then-current prices.
Verdict: the better choice for monitoring-led teams that negotiate the term.
How to Choose Between Cision and Meltwater
| If you need... | Choose |
|---|---|
| Social listening across TikTok, LinkedIn, Threads or Chinese platforms | Meltwater |
| Wire distribution through PR Newswire from the same corporate group | Cision |
| The largest podcast monitoring count, by vendor figures | Cision (60,000+ vs 20,000+) |
| Media data in your BI tools or AI assistants through an API or MCP | Meltwater (Enterprise or Agency) |
| Press release distribution inside the monitoring platform | Meltwater |
| Published 24/7 support and the higher uptime target (99.8% vs Cision's 99.5%) | Meltwater |
| To avoid a 36-month standard term | Either: Cision publishes no standard term, and Meltwater's minimum is 12 months; negotiate the term in the order |
| Consumer and market research beyond PR | Cision (Brandwatch is a sister company) |
| To track brand mentions in AI answers | Either: GenAI Lens or Cision AI Visibility |
Ask both vendors for a demo on the same brand, market and date range, and compare the mentions each finds against a list you build by hand.
Final Verdict: Cision or Meltwater?
For a communications team whose main job is monitoring, Meltwater is the better choice in 2026: it documents wider social coverage, an API and MCP server, 24/7 support and a higher uptime target, and users rate it slightly higher. Cision is the better choice when wire distribution through PR Newswire, podcast monitoring or a contract that does not start from a published 36-month standard matter more. The decision depends on three things: which social networks and media markets you must cover, whether distribution is part of the same budget, and whether you can negotiate Meltwater's 36-month standard term down. Neither tool earns coverage on its own, and neither publishes a price, so get both quotes on the same scope.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who owns Cision in 2026?
Platinum Equity. Its portfolio page lists Cision as an active public-to-private investment, acquired from public shareholders in January 2020, and records Cision's later purchases of Brandwatch in June 2021 and Streem in April 2022. Cision in turn owns PR Newswire, Brandwatch and Trajaan.
Who owns Meltwater in 2026?
MW Investment B.V., an entity jointly controlled by Marlin Equity Partners and Altor. Meltwater's own press release says the take-private completed on August 9, 2023 and the company was delisted from the Oslo Stock Exchange. Marlin lists Meltwater as a current holding, and Altor's page records its first investment in October 2012.
How much do Cision and Meltwater cost?
Neither publishes a price. Cision lists four CisionOne packages and says it provides pricing during a short consultation. Meltwater lists Starter, Pro, Enterprise and Agency plans, all marked Contact Sales, and says quotes depend on sources, regions, data volume, users, integrations, support and contract terms. Pricing checked October 2026.
How long is a Meltwater or Cision contract?
Meltwater's help center gives a standard term of 36 months and a 12-month minimum, with automatic renewal unless cancelled 60 days before the end. Cision's master agreement invoices fees annually in advance and leaves the term and renewal to the signed order form. Either can be negotiated before signing.
Which has more TV and radio coverage?
The published figures cannot settle it. Cision says CisionOne covers 3,000+ TV and radio stations. Meltwater says it covers all 210 U.S. media markets and thousands of TV and radio stations worldwide. The two vendors count different things, so ask each for the stations in your markets.
Does Meltwater or Cision include press release distribution?
Both groups sell it, in different ways. Meltwater offers distribution inside its own platform with flat per-release pricing, volume bundles and no minimum commitment. Cision owns PR Newswire, a separate wire service that is bought as its own product. Compare a wire purchase separately from a monitoring contract.
Can either tool track how ChatGPT describes my brand?
Both sell it. Meltwater's GenAI Lens lists ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, DeepSeek, Llama, Claude, Gemini and Grok. Cision's AI Visibility dashboards, launched July 14, 2026 and powered by Trajaan, cover nine AI platforms, including ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. Both sample prompts; neither sees every answer users get.
Which tool do users rate higher?
Meltwater, narrowly. On Capterra, read October 7, 2026, Meltwater averaged 4.0 out of 5 from 96 reviews and Cision 3.8 from 89 reviews. Both samples are small, span several years and include older products, so treat the gap as a weak signal.
Can I take my data with me if I leave?
Partly. Cision lets customers export their own data during the term, but its monitoring appendix requires deleting Cision's data, except reports, when the contract ends. Meltwater's product terms cap CSV exports at 30,000 documents a month unless agreed and forbid using exported content to train AI. Plan exports before the end date.
How We Compared Cision and Meltwater
Criteria: monitoring coverage, journalist database and outreach, reporting, AI features, integrations and API, press distribution, ownership, support, pricing and contract terms. Dates: vendor, owner and legal pages were read on October 9, 2026; Capterra ratings were read on October 7, 2026, because Capterra blocked our request on October 9. Sources: each vendor's product, pricing, help-center, developer and legal pages and press releases; Platinum Equity's, Marlin Equity Partners' and Altor's portfolio pages; PR Newswire's About page; and Capterra. Pages were fetched with a generic browser user agent; we did not sign in to either product.
Limitations: we did not test either platform hands-on, request quotes or measure database accuracy. Source counts, bounce rates and AI capabilities are vendor claims. Meltwater gives two figures for monitored news (200M+ online publications and 270,000+ news sources). Ownership was checked against owners' and vendors' own pages; a Google News headline search on October 9, 2026 found no reported 2026 change of ownership at either company. Enterprise order forms can override published terms.
