What Is PR Newswire?
PR Newswire is a paid press release distribution service, founded in 1954 and owned by Cision, that sends client releases to media, websites, feeds and journalists and sells amplification and reporting tools around them.
PR Newswire's About page gives the founding year and says Cision acquired it in 2015. Its releases are sold through the PR Newswire Amplify™ platform, which also contains AI writing tools, planning, reporting and the paid add-ons PR Newswire groups under Multichannel Amplification™ (All Products).
What Is Business Wire?
Business Wire is a paid press release and regulatory disclosure distribution service, owned by Berkshire Hathaway, that transmits full-text releases, filings and multimedia to media, financial services and regulators through targeted circuits.
Business Wire describes itself as “Press Release Distribution & Regulatory Disclosure Experts” with 60+ years serving clients (About Business Wire). Berkshire's 2025 Annual Report says Business Wire distributes releases globally through its “patented NX network”.
PR Newswire vs Business Wire: Pricing
Business Wire publishes a starting price and PR Newswire does not. Business Wire's pricing page lists $475 as the “Starting price for 400 words, U.S. domestic local distribution”. PR Newswire's distribution page answers its own pricing question with “Costs vary based on distribution scope, geographic reach and additional services such as multimedia, targeting and amplification channels.” Pricing checked October 2026.
| Pricing item | PR Newswire | Business Wire |
|---|---|---|
| Published starting price | Not published | $475 (400 words, U.S. local distribution) |
| National U.S. circuit | Not published | Not published (quote) |
| International distribution | Not published | Not published (quote) |
| Multimedia | Not published; listed as a cost factor | Not published; Business Wire says it “may affect pricing” |
| Volume plans | Not published | Offered; terms not published |
| What the vendor says to do | Create an account or request a demo | Start a release online or request a quote |
Business Wire lists what every release includes: 400 words with unlimited hyperlinks, secure submission, a full-color linked logo, rich-text formatting and financial tables, analytics reports, 24/7 customer service, editorial review, callout text and social sharing tools. Its pricing FAQ says cost depends on word count, distribution geography and enhancements such as multimedia or translation. A U.S. local circuit is the cheapest option. A national or international release will cost more, by an amount Business Wire does not publish.
Ownership: Cision vs Berkshire Hathaway
PR Newswire is owned by Cision, a private-equity-owned communications software company. Business Wire is owned by Berkshire Hathaway. Platinum Equity lists Cision as an active portfolio company “Acquired from public shareholders in January 2020”. Berkshire's 2025 Annual Report lists Business Wire Inc. among its operating companies, with 369 employees.
Ownership shapes the product mix more than it shapes quality. Cision also owns CisionOne (media database and monitoring), Brandwatch (consumer intelligence) and Trajaan (search intelligence), and PR Newswire's reporting draws on Trajaan for its AI-visibility report. Business Wire sits in Berkshire's service businesses, and Berkshire describes it as transmitting releases, regulatory filings and multimedia “primarily to journalists, financial professionals, investor services and regulatory authorities.” That description matches Business Wire's own emphasis on disclosure.
Distribution Networks: What Each Wire Claims
PR Newswire claims a reach of 440,000+ newsrooms, websites, direct feeds, journalists and influencers. Business Wire claims 92,000+ media points. The two counts use different units and neither vendor publishes the list behind them, so the bigger number does not show the bigger network. Both say they reach more than 160 countries.
Number stated by each vendor (“more than” claims), October 10, 2026
Source: PR Newswire distribution page; Business Wire distribution page, read October 10, 2026.
Vendor claims we could not verify. The language figures measure different things: PR Newswire's are targeting options, Business Wire's are languages available for translation.
PR Newswire breaks its figure into 270,000+ journalists and influencers and 9,000+ websites and digital outlets (distribution page). Its sign-up page gives different figures: 82,000+ “media & press release syndication outlets” and 300,000+ journalists and influencers. PR Newswire also says it reviews 325,000+ releases a year. Business Wire says it distributes 13,000+ releases a month and offers free access to 200+ trade publications for releases distributed in the U.S. and Canada (distribution page, Why Business Wire). For earnings releases, Business Wire names Yahoo! Finance, Morningstar and The Associated Press among full-text destinations, plus FactSet, Factiva and LexisNexis (investor relations page).
These counts measure deliveries, not pages that last. Our study of where wire releases end up found Morningstar's copies of PR Newswire releases deleted after about 90 days, and found that the partner lists behind such counts cannot be checked from outside.
Targeting and Circuits
Business Wire publishes its full U.S. circuit menu, and PR Newswire describes targeting options without publishing a list. Business Wire's distribution lists page names national, regional, state and city circuits, a North America Disclosure Network, industry corridors and free trade lists. PR Newswire says you can target 170+ countries, states, regions, cities, industries, beats and demographics.
Business Wire's U.S. trade lists run from “Automotive: General” to “Travel: Vacation” and are marked complimentary. It also lists circuits for Canada, Latin America, Europe, the UK and Ireland, German-speaking Europe, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East and Africa, and says it covers 160+ industry categories. PR Newswire's distribution page describes targeting by country (170+ in 40+ languages), state or province, region, city, industry, vertical, beat and demographics, and its sign-up page cites 200+ beats and verticals. If you want to see the circuit you are buying before you talk to sales, Business Wire's page shows more.
Regulatory Disclosure and Investor Relations
Business Wire states more non-U.S. regulatory credentials than PR Newswire does. Business Wire says it is an approved Primary Information Provider for UK announcements, a TSX-approved newswire for Canadian disclosure, and offers European disclosure services. PR Newswire documents disclosure distribution, IR websites, webcasts and investor targeting, and its Canadian site describes a filing service for SEDAR, EDGAR/iXBRL, CSE and Nordic markets. It tells companies to decide their own regulatory requirements.
In the U.S., Regulation FD lets an issuer skip the Form 8-K if it uses “another method (or combination of methods) of disclosure that is reasonably designed to provide broad, non-exclusionary distribution of the information to the public” (17 CFR 243.101(e)). Both wires sell that kind of distribution. PR Newswire says it publishes financial news to 6,400+ financial, news and research websites “via PR Newswire's comprehensive full disclosure networks” (IR solutions). Its financial services FAQ says “Companies should determine their own regulatory filing and disclosure requirements and use PR Newswire as part of their broader disclosure process.” Business Wire lists a North America Disclosure Network circuit.
The documented differences:
- Outside the U.S.: Business Wire's UK disclosure page says its service meets FCA requirements for London Stock Exchange companies, with filing hours of 07:00–18:30 UK time on weekdays. Its IR page describes the TSX-approved Canadian service and SEDAR filings. PR Newswire's Canadian site describes a Regulatory Filing service covering SEDAR, EDGAR/iXBRL, CSE and Nordic markets, and its UK site carries UK and D/A/CH regulatory news listings, but the PR Newswire pages we read do not state Primary Information Provider or TSX approval.
- Filing workflow: Business Wire says Workiva users can submit releases directly from Workiva (financial reporting page). Business Wire's pages that we read do not describe an EDGAR filing service; PR Newswire Canada's Regulatory Filing service lists EDGAR/iXBRL. Confirm filing-agent terms with either wire before relying on it.
- IR tools: PR Newswire sells hosted IR websites, webcasts, conference calls and investor targeting through “Market Lists powered by Irwin” (400,000+ investors and analysts, by its count). Business Wire offers IR websites through a partnership with Q4.
- Listings: Business Wire says the NYSE has recommended it as the newswire for newly listed companies since 2007 (public companies page).
Editorial Review and Turnaround
Both wires have every release reviewed by editors, and both offer round-the-clock support. Neither publishes a guaranteed turnaround for an ordinary release. PR Newswire says releases can be distributed “within hours of approval” once an account exists. Business Wire says its editors process earnings releases at about 20 minutes per page on average.
PR Newswire says its 24/7 editors proofread every release for grammar, spelling, broken links and industry tagging, and that it found over 22,000 mistakes in client copy in 2022 (distribution page). Business Wire says its editors average 15 years of tenure (Why Business Wire) and that, once a release is approved, it “can typically distribute it quickly” (pricing FAQ). Neither wire publishes acceptance rules for ordinary releases on the pages we read. Our report on wire editorial standards explains what a wire's review checks and what it does not.
Plan for the first release to take longer than later ones. PR Newswire's sign-up form asks whether you are “ready to send my release within 48 hours”, and both wires set up an account before your first release goes out.
Multimedia
Both wires carry photos, video and other media with a release, and they differ in what they add. PR Newswire says 4,000+ downstream sites display its release images and video, 1,400 of them in the U.S., and offers AI-generated images and short videos. Business Wire says videos sent with its releases also go to AP Video Hub, and offers custom Interactive Media releases.
PR Newswire's multimedia page describes Create+, which turns a release into images and “info-bites”, and Snapshot Video, which makes 15- to 45-second videos from still images. Business Wire's multimedia page lists 27+ multimedia types and an image carousel on its release pages. Both publish engagement uplift figures for multimedia releases. These are vendor averages with no published method, so we do not repeat them. Business Wire says multimedia can affect price. PR Newswire lists multimedia as a cost factor.
Reporting and Analytics
Both wires include a performance report with each release. PR Newswire documents more AI-specific reporting. PR Newswire's report module shows how many visits to a release came from LLMs, and a separate AEO & GEO Brand Report, powered by Cision's Trajaan, tracks how AI models describe your brand. Business Wire's NewsTrak reports views, link clicks, online postings and where a release appears.
PR Newswire's Report Results page describes pickup, traffic, engagement and audience metrics, side-by-side comparison of up to three releases, an AI-written summary, and PDF or CSV export. It says the data comes from “proprietary analytics technology”. Business Wire's analytics page describes views over the first 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days or a release's lifetime, traffic by source, location and language, link clicks and social shares, and PDF or Excel downloads. A pickup count records that a partner rendered a release, not that the page will last; our wire-geography study describes a pickup-counting request we observed on a PR Newswire partner copy. Neither wire's report shows what assistants say about you elsewhere, so check that independently with our guide to checking what AI says about your company, and measure AI visits to your own site with our GA4 AI-referral guide.
AI and Answer-Engine Claims Each Vendor Makes
Both wires now sell press releases as a route into AI answers, and both statements below are vendor claims, not findings. PR Newswire says it helps “AI platforms like ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Perplexity see, find and cite your press releases.” Business Wire says it distributes releases into outlets and databases “that the largest AI tools index and cite most heavily”. Neither publishes a method that would let a buyer verify a citation rate.
What PR Newswire says (AEO and GEO page, AI press release page):
- It adds JSON-LD structured data to every release to identify the organization and the core message.
- It “automatically adds proper indexing features like canonical links and syndicated tags” to avoid duplicate-content problems.
- Distributing through its domain means “AI models categorize your news as a verified primary source”.
- Its Create tool drafts releases with Google Gemini Enterprise, and its Press Release Score rates drafts from “Poor” to “Great”.
What Business Wire says (AI visibility page, distribution page, IR page, features page):
- Its releases carry “structured company metadata” for search and AI experiences.
- A Release Summary “helps boost your press release's discoverability in both traditional and AI-powered search.”
- AI assistants including Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini draw on the outlets and databases it distributes to.
- It publishes a count of 200M+ backlinks to businesswire.com.
What our research adds. Two vendor claims run into evidence we have. First, PR Newswire mentions “backlinks and domain authority” and Business Wire cites its backlink count, but body links in client releases on both wires are nofollowed (next section), so they pass no ranking credit to the issuing company. Second, PR Newswire says canonical links are added to syndicated copies, but the one partner copy we fully inspected, on Morningstar, pointed its canonical tag at itself (wire-geography study). That is one copy, not a rule. On whether an assistant actually reads and repeats a release, see does ChatGPT read press releases: a release is the company describing itself, and independent coverage carries more weight.
What Happens After the Wire: Links, Canonicals and AI Crawlers
On the technical facts we could check, PR Newswire and Business Wire behave the same way. On October 6, 2026 we parsed 70 Business Wire releases. All 200 external links in the release bodies went through Business Wire's click-tracking host and carried rel="nofollow", and every page set its canonical tag to its own Business Wire URL. PR Newswire showed the same nofollow pattern in our September sample.
| Check | PR Newswire | Business Wire |
|---|---|---|
| External links in release body | 19 links in 8 of 70 releases, all nofollow (September 24, 2026) | 200 links in 57 of 70 releases, all nofollow, all routed via cts.businesswire.com (October 6, 2026) |
| Canonical on the wire's own page | Points to itself (one release inspected, September 2026) | Points to its own Business Wire URL (70 of 70 releases) |
| AI crawlers named in robots.txt | None; wildcard blocks only template, widget and MultiVu paths | None; wildcard blocks only account, API, preview, asset and similar paths |
| llms.txt | Published, labelled “AI Context File” | Not published (the address returned Business Wire's not-found page) |
| Partner-copy persistence | Morningstar copies deleted after about 90 days | Not measured |
The PR Newswire rows reuse our nofollow study and AI-crawler study. Business Wire refused plain HTTP requests in those studies. On October 6, 2026 its pages and robots.txt loaded in an ordinary desktop browser, which filled that gap. Business Wire's releases contained far more body links than PR Newswire's: 57 of 70 compared with 8 of 70. The samples come from different weeks and listings, so treat that difference as a hint, not a finding. A nofollowed link still works for readers who click it.
Support
Both wires offer support around the clock. PR Newswire says its editorial team is available 24/7/365 to review and advise on releases. Business Wire includes 24/7 customer service with every release and its UK disclosure page says the editorial team is available 24/7. Business Wire's help center sends existing clients to their account manager or to its Business Wire Connect platform.
PR Newswire's site lists a phone line, live chat and regional editorial bureaus. Business Wire's help center sends new customers to its contact form, phone or email. We did not contact either support team, so we cannot compare response times. Testimonials on both sites praise responsiveness, but each vendor chose its own testimonials.
Where PR Newswire Wins
- Breadth of add-ons from one vendor: guaranteed paid placement, SocialBoost, media tours, ProfNet and webcasts are all listed on one products page.
- AI-specific reporting: LLM-referred visits in the wire report, plus a separate AEO & GEO Brand Report.
- Built-in AI drafting and multimedia creation: the Create, Create+ and Snapshot Video tools sit inside the same platform as distribution.
- Machine-readable signals: a published llms.txt and stated JSON-LD on every release.
- In-house IR tools: IR websites, webcasts and investor targeting without a partner.
Where Business Wire Wins
- Price transparency: a published $475 starting price and a published list of what every release includes.
- Visible circuit menu: national, regional, state, city and free trade circuits are listed before you contact sales.
- Documented non-U.S. disclosure: UK Primary Information Provider, TSX-approved in Canada, European disclosure services.
- Disclosure workflow: direct submission from Workiva, and NYSE's recommendation for newly listed companies since 2007.
- Earnings destinations named: its IR page names the sites and databases that carry full-text earnings releases.
Who Should Choose PR Newswire?
Choose PR Newswire if: you want one vendor to distribute a release and then extend it through paid placement, social, video and AI-visibility reporting, and you are comfortable getting a price only through sales.
Avoid PR Newswire if: you need a published price before you commit, or you need a wire whose own pages state UK Primary Information Provider status, TSX approval or European disclosure services.
Best for: brand and agency teams running a multi-channel launch.
Starting price: not published (checked October 2026).
Primary strength: the widest set of amplification, AI-drafting and reporting add-ons in one platform.
Main limitation: no public pricing; reach figures vary between its own pages (9,000+ websites on one, 82,000+ syndication outlets on another).
Verdict: the stronger choice when the release is the start of a campaign, not the whole of it.
Who Should Choose Business Wire?
Choose Business Wire if: you are sending one company announcement on a known budget, want to see the circuit and starting price first, or are a listed company with UK, Canadian or European disclosure obligations.
Avoid Business Wire if: you want paid placement, AI content creation and AI-visibility reporting bundled with distribution from the same vendor.
Best for: single U.S. announcements and public-company disclosure.
Starting price: $475 for 400 words, U.S. local distribution (checked October 6, 2026).
Primary strength: transparent entry pricing, a published circuit menu and documented international disclosure.
Main limitation: national and international prices are by quote, and fewer AI-specific reporting features are documented.
Verdict: the stronger choice when the release itself is the deliverable.
How to Choose Between PR Newswire and Business Wire
| If you need... | Choose |
|---|---|
| A published price before you talk to sales | Business Wire |
| A single local or state U.S. announcement on a small budget | Business Wire (starting price covers U.S. local) |
| A wire that states UK Primary Information Provider status, TSX approval or European disclosure services | Business Wire |
| To submit earnings releases straight from Workiva | Business Wire |
| Paid placement, social and video add-ons on the same order | PR Newswire |
| Reporting on LLM-referred visits to the release | PR Newswire |
| AI drafting tools inside the distribution platform | PR Newswire |
| An IR website and webcasts from the wire itself | PR Newswire |
| Links that pass SEO value | Neither: both nofollow body links |
| A guaranteed citation in ChatGPT or AI Overviews | Neither: no vendor controls that |
Final Verdict: PR Newswire or Business Wire?
For distributing one company press release in 2026, choose Business Wire. Choose PR Newswire only if you are buying a campaign. Business Wire is the only one of the two that publishes a starting price, lists what is included and shows its circuits up front, so you can plan the purchase. PR Newswire is worth its quote when you will also buy paid placement, social, video or AI-visibility reporting, because those come from the same platform. If you are a listed company, base the decision on where you must disclose. Business Wire documents UK, Canadian and European regulatory services. PR Newswire documents in-house IR websites and webcasts, plus a SEDAR and EDGAR filing service on its Canadian site. Do not base the choice on links or AI answers: both wires nofollow body links, both let AI crawlers in, and neither can promise a citation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a Business Wire press release cost in 2026?
Business Wire's pricing page lists a starting price of $475 for a 400-word release with U.S. domestic local distribution, checked October 6, 2026. Price rises with word count, distribution geography and enhancements such as multimedia or translation. National and international circuit prices are not published; Business Wire quotes them.
How much does PR Newswire charge for a press release?
PR Newswire does not publish a price. Its own FAQ says costs vary based on distribution scope, geographic reach and additional services such as multimedia, targeting and amplification. You get a figure by creating an account or requesting a demo.
Who owns PR Newswire and Business Wire?
PR Newswire belongs to Cision, which says on PR Newswire's About page it acquired the wire in 2015; Platinum Equity lists Cision as an active portfolio company it took private in January 2020. Business Wire Inc. is listed among Berkshire Hathaway's operating companies in Berkshire's 2025 Annual Report.
Do PR Newswire or Business Wire links pass SEO value?
Not on the evidence we have. In 70 PR Newswire releases checked in September 2026, all 19 external body links carried rel=nofollow. In 70 Business Wire releases checked on October 6, 2026, all 200 external body links were routed through Business Wire's click-tracking host and carried rel=nofollow.
Can either wire get my press release cited by ChatGPT or Google's AI answers?
Neither can guarantee it, and neither publishes evidence that would let you verify a citation rate. Both say they structure releases for AI discovery. Both allow AI crawlers by default in robots.txt. Whether a release is retrieved and cited depends on systems neither wire controls.
Does sending a release over a wire satisfy Regulation FD?
Regulation FD lets an issuer skip a Form 8-K if it uses a method reasonably designed to provide broad, non-exclusionary distribution to the public. Both wires sell distribution for disclosures, but whether a given release meets that standard is the company's legal judgment. PR Newswire's own FAQ says companies should determine their own requirements.
Which wire is faster?
Neither publishes a guaranteed turnaround for an ordinary release. PR Newswire says releases can go out within hours of approval once an account is set up. Business Wire says it can typically distribute quickly once a release is approved, and that its editors process earnings releases at about 20 minutes per page on average.
Do partner sites keep a wire release online?
Not necessarily. In our September 2026 study of Common Crawl data, PR Newswire's own release pages had a 0.2% loss rate, while Morningstar's copies of PR Newswire releases were deleted after roughly 90 days. Cite and archive the wire's own URL. We could not measure Business Wire's partner copies.
Does either wire block AI crawlers?
No. On October 6, 2026, neither robots.txt named GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot or CCBot, and both wildcard rules block only account, template and similar paths, not news releases. PR Newswire also publishes an llms.txt file; Business Wire's llms.txt address returned its not-found page.
How We Compared PR Newswire and Business Wire
Criteria: ownership, distribution network claims, targeting, regulatory disclosure, editorial review and turnaround, multimedia, reporting, AI claims, link and crawler behavior, support and published pricing. When: all vendor pages were read on October 6, 2026. How: PR Newswire pages were fetched with a standard HTTP client. Business Wire refused plain HTTP clients with HTTP 403, as in our earlier studies, so we read its pages in an ordinary desktop browser. Ownership was checked against Berkshire Hathaway's 2025 Annual Report and Platinum Equity's portfolio page, not against the vendors' own pages.
Our own measurement: on October 6, 2026 we took every eighth English-language URL, starting with the first, from Business Wire's Google News sitemap for October 5, 2026, and parsed the first 70. In each, we counted the anchors inside the release body container that pointed off www.businesswire.com and recorded their rel values and the page's canonical tag. One release's canonical used a different slug for the same release ID, which we counted as self-referencing. PR Newswire figures come from our September 2026 studies, linked above, and were not re-run.
Limitations: we did not buy a release from either wire. We did not test editorial turnaround, dashboards or support, and we did not get a quote. Network sizes, engagement uplifts, AI-citation counts and similar figures are vendor claims we could not verify, and we left out the ones with no stated method. Prices and features change. This comparison describes the vendors' public pages as of October 6, 2026.
