Muck Rack vs Cision: Which Is Better for Earned-Media Outreach and Monitoring in 2026?

For a company or PR team whose main job is pitching journalists, Muck Rack is the better fit: journalists can maintain their own profiles alongside its editorial team, pitches go out from your own inbox and are matched to the coverage they produce, and users rate it higher on Capterra. Cision's CisionOne wins on monitoring breadth by its own counts, including 3,000+ TV and radio stations, and on reach beyond PR through sister companies PR Newswire and Brandwatch. Neither publishes prices, and both bill annually in advance.

  • Database maintenance differs: Muck Rack combines an editorial team of more than 100 people with journalists editing their own free profiles (Muck Rack; pricing FAQ); Cision describes a “human-curated database of verified journalists and media outlets” with over 500,000 media profiles (Cision).
  • Monitoring: Cision says CisionOne covers 3,000+ TV and radio stations, 60,000+ podcasts and 10,000+ paywalled titles (Cision). Muck Rack covers 75,000+ podcasts (Muck Rack), but broadcast (via TVEyes) and social listening (via Keyhole) are paid add-ons (Muck Rack help).

What Is Muck Rack?

Muck Rack is a PR software platform that combines a journalist and outlet database, email pitching, media monitoring and coverage reporting, and gives journalists free profiles and tools.

Muck Rack says it was founded in 2009 “to connect journalists on social media” and launched its software platform in 2011 (Muck Rack, About). It now describes itself as “the AI communications platform” and sells a separate AI-visibility product, Generative Pulse. Journalists never pay; PR teams buy paid subscriptions (Muck Rack pricing FAQ), billed annually under its terms.

What Is Cision?

Cision is a communications software and services company whose main PR platform, CisionOne, bundles a media database, outreach, media monitoring, analytics and social listening; it also owns PR Newswire and Brandwatch.

Cision traces its origins to 1876 and groups its brands as PR Newswire (news amplification), CisionOne (media intelligence), Brandwatch (consumer intelligence) and Trajaan (search intelligence) (Cision, About). In this comparison, “Cision” means CisionOne unless stated. Cision still supports older platforms too: its contact page offers help for CisionOne, Cision Communications Cloud and a “Nextgen” platform, and training for Cision PR Edition and CisionPoint (Cision, Contact). Ask which platform a quote covers.

Pricing checked October 2026 (October 7) on muckrack.com/pricing and Cision's CisionOne pricing page. Sources for the rows: Muck Rack's add-ons overview and terms of service; Cision's Master Subscription Agreement, Monitoring Services Appendix, AI Coverage Analysis help article and Journalist Outreach page. We did not request quotes, and we do not repeat third-party price estimates because neither vendor confirms them.

Muck Rack is unusually direct about fit: its pricing FAQ says “Solo practitioners often find alternatives better suited to sporadic usage patterns, though our Starter tier addresses individual needs”. A team that answers a few journalist requests a month may get more from a request platform; see Qwoted vs Featured.

Journalist Database: How Each Is Built and Maintained

Muck Rack builds profiles from public sources and keeps them current with an editorial team of more than 100 people plus journalists who claim and edit their own free profiles; Cision says its 500,000+ media profiles of journalists and outlets across 225 countries and territories are curated and verified by an in-house team of media researchers. Both accept update requests from customers.

Muck Rack

  • Sources: profiles are created “using publicly available sources, such as news articles, online contact information, and social media posts” (Muck Rack help, Overview of Data).
  • Update cycle: Muck Rack says it aims “to review every listing annually”, makes hundreds of thousands of updates a year, and watches signals including social posts, industry news and pitch bouncebacks to spot job changes (Muck Rack, Media Database FAQ).
  • Self-maintained profiles: its pricing FAQ calls Muck Rack “the only database where reporters actively maintain their own information rather than relying solely on research teams”. That is a vendor claim we could not test.
  • Verification: the green badge requires recent bylines at Muck Rack-verified outlets within the last 30 days; part-time journalists, independent bloggers, non-news podcasters and newsletter writers are not verified by default (Muck Rack help, Journalist Verification).

Cision

  • Scale: “over 500,000 media profiles across 225 countries and territories” (Cision, Journalist Outreach); the CisionOne page instead says “500k+ validated journalists and outlets” and, further down, “500k+ influencers” (CisionOne). Cision does not say how many of the 500,000 are individual journalists rather than outlets.
  • Maintenance: customers send changes through a “Have an update?” button, and “All submitted details will undergo verification by the Cision Media Research team” (CisionOne help). Journalists can add, update or remove their own profile through a public form (Cision, Update Media Profile).

How to read the size claims: a 500,000-profile database is global, and Cision's own wording says it includes outlets as well as journalists. For scale, the U.S. government counts about 47,100 news analysts, reporters and journalists; see how many journalists there are. Neither vendor publishes an accuracy rate, so test bounce rates on your own beat during a trial or demo.

Pitching and Media CRM Workflow

Muck Rack sends pitches from your own Gmail or Outlook account and automatically matches them to the articles they produce; Cision's CisionOne sends branded media releases and pitches with open and click tracking and logs calls, emails and tasks against each contact. Both support shared lists, notes and team assignments, so the difference is in sending and attribution.

  • Muck Rack sending: Email Integration (via Nylas) puts your address in the From field, and Muck Rack says “Right now, this integration only uses a scope to send emails”, with no access to emails sent outside it (Muck Rack help, Email Integration). Your daily limit is set 20% below your email provider's limit; high-volume teams can switch to DNS sending with a shared monthly quota (Muck Rack help, Email Sending Limits).
  • Muck Rack attribution: coverage from a pitch is “automatically detected and confirmed as Pitch Placements with links to the exact articles”, and an Inbound Media Manager tracks incoming journalist requests (Muck Rack, Media Pitching).
  • Cision sending: users build media releases from templates, or AI Pitches from a prompt of at least 14 words, then personalize each recipient's copy (CisionOne help, AI Pitches). Activities shows delivered, opened, clicked and unsubscribed status for each release or pitch (CisionOne help, Activities).
  • Cision attribution and CRM: Cision says you can “see how a media release drove story pickup” and “capture important phone and email conversations, assign tasks” (Cision, Journalist Outreach). Its Media Database appendix says that if a user connects an email account, Cision or its providers “will search, index and copy email messages” to display them in the platform (Cision Media Database Service Appendix). Review that with IT.

Common mistake: treating either tool as a mass-mail system. Muck Rack warns that lists over 500 recipients slow delivery, and Gmail and Yahoo enforce a 0.3% spam-complaint threshold (Muck Rack help). Journalists already receive many pitches a day; see how many pitches a journalist gets.

Media Monitoring: News, Broadcast, Social and Podcasts

Cision's CisionOne describes broader monitoring in its standard package, including 3,000+ TV and radio stations and 10,000+ paywalled titles; Muck Rack monitors online news and 75,000+ podcasts in its plans but sells broadcast, social listening and, below Premier, print magazines as add-ons. All figures below are the vendors' own counts, checked October 7, 2026.

Podcasts monitored, Muck Rack vs Cision

Number of podcasts each vendor says it monitors (minimums, vendor claims), as listed October 10, 2026

Muck Rack
75,000+
Cision
60,000+

Source: Muck Rack, Media Monitoring page (FAQ); Cision, Media Monitoring page, read October 10, 2026.

Vendor claims, not independently verified; neither vendor explains how it counts a podcast. Cision also lists 3,000+ TV and radio stations and 10,000+ paywalled titles, while Muck Rack sells broadcast monitoring as a paid add-on.

Muck Rack's own pages differ on what is included. Its monitoring FAQ says Muck Rack “automatically tracks digital news and social content, 75,000+ podcasts as well as print newspapers via our partnership with LexisNexis, print magazines via multiple partnerships, and broadcast TV and radio coverage via our partnerships with TVEyes” (Muck Rack, Media Monitoring FAQ). Its add-ons article says Broadcast “is available as a paid add-on”, that “Each market location requires its own add-on purchase and is billed separately”, and that Print Magazine Monitoring “is included for Premier customers and offered as an add-on for Starter and Standard packages” (Muck Rack help, Add-Ons); its pricing page also lists “Print & Broadcast Monitoring” under add-ons (Muck Rack pricing). This comparison follows the add-ons article; get in writing which channels your plan includes.

Licensing limits travel with the content. Cision's Monitoring appendix restricts broadcast clips to internal use, caps LexisNexis content shared with non-users at 25 recipients a month before extra fees, and requires UK users to hold their own NLA or CLA licence for that content (Cision Monitoring Services Appendix). Muck Rack's broadcast and print come through TVEyes and LexisNexis as well, so ask either vendor what you may share outside the company. If you only need web mentions of one brand, test the free route first: how to monitor brand mentions with Google Alerts.

Reporting and Analytics

Both platforms turn monitored coverage into branded dashboards and reports with reach, sentiment and share of voice; Muck Rack ties reports to its pitch records and varies dashboard customization by tier, while Cision's Instant Insights builds dashboards from “dozens of metrics” across traditional and social media.

  • Muck Rack: coverage reports, dashboards (“Template only” on Starter and Standard, “Custom” on Premier), interactive presentations, newsletters and a customizable PR Hit Score; sentiment moves from NLP to “AI-Powered” on Premier (Muck Rack pricing). Metrics include impressions, reach, AVE, share of voice, sentiment and unique visitors per month (Muck Rack, Reporting).
  • Cision: Instant Insights dashboards measure reach, key-message pull-through, sentiment and share of voice, and export as branded reports (Cision, Instant Insights). Its Monitoring appendix bars sharing reports with third parties without written consent (Cision appendix).

Both report AVE (advertising value equivalency). AVE prices coverage as if it were advertising space, so it measures cost equivalence rather than outcomes; report pitch-to-placement rate and referral traffic alongside it.

AI Features (Vendor Claims)

Both vendors now market themselves around AI: Muck Rack offers a Media List Agent, AI search and relevance filtering, and Generative Pulse for tracking brand visibility in ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude; Cision offers an AI Assistant, AI Pitches, the React Score for harmful content and a paid AI Coverage Analysis add-on. Everything in this section is the vendors' description; we did not test output quality.

  • Muck Rack: Media List Agent recommends journalists from a description of your pitch, AI Search Assistant turns requests into searches, and AI Visibility Badges flag journalists and outlets most often cited in AI answers (Muck Rack, Media Database). Curation Engine uses AI “trained and refined by Muck Rack's Media Intelligence team” to filter coverage (Muck Rack, Monitoring). PressPal.ai drafts releases and pitches using ChatGPT, with a 100-character prompt limit (Muck Rack help, PressPal.ai). Generative Pulse tracks how ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude describe your brand (Muck Rack, AI).
  • Cision: the AI Assistant writes Boolean queries, creates Mention Streams and summarizes coverage into 3–5 topics (CisionOne help, AI Assistant). Cision says its AI recommends “the best time to pitch” and combines proprietary AI with collaborators “like Google Cloud” (CisionOne AI). AI Coverage Analysis is “available as a paid add-on” (CisionOne help), and AI Visibility monitoring runs on a metered “answer allowance” (CisionOne updates, September 2026).

Cision's contracts also forbid customers from using its media data “to train, develop, enhance, or contribute to any generative artificial intelligence models” without written consent (Cision Media Database appendix). Check that clause if you plan to feed exported lists into your own AI tools.

Integrations

Cision documents more enterprise integrations, including Microsoft Teams alerts, SCIM user provisioning and native mobile apps; Muck Rack documents direct Gmail and Outlook sending, Slack, Google Analytics and SSO, with its API sold as an add-on only to Premier customers, who build the integration themselves.

Ownership and Corporate Structure

Cision is owned by Platinum Equity, which took it private in January 2020, and Cision in turn owns PR Newswire, Brandwatch and Trajaan; Susquehanna Growth Equity lists Muck Rack as a 2022 investment, after what Muck Rack's founder called 13 years of bootstrapping. The structure affects bundling, data sharing and marketing contact.

  • Cision: Platinum Equity lists Cision as acquired “from public shareholders in January 2020”, with Brandwatch acquired in June 2021 and Streem in April 2022 (Platinum Equity). PR Newswire says it was “acquired by Cision in 2015” (PR Newswire, About). Cision's demo forms say submitting details lets “Cision and its affiliated brands, including Brandwatch, CisionOne, and PR Newswire” send marketing (CisionOne), and its media-profile form says data is shared with “sister companies and affiliates” (Cision). If you also need a newswire, compare that purchase separately: PR Newswire vs Business Wire.
  • Muck Rack: the contracting entity is Muck Rack, LLC, a Delaware company (Muck Rack terms). Susquehanna Growth Equity lists Muck Rack as a 2022 investment and quotes co-founder Greg Galant: “After 13 years of bootstrapping we were in a fortunate position” (SGE).

Support and Onboarding

Muck Rack publishes its support levels by plan, from self-led onboarding and a pooled success team on Starter to instructor-led onboarding and a named success manager on Standard and Premier; Cision documents in-app chat, help sites, account managers and training, but not support tiers. On Capterra, customer-service ratings are 4.1 for Muck Rack and 3.7 for Cision.

  • Muck Rack: live chat with a “target response time” that differs by plan, a help center, and online training and certifications (Muck Rack pricing). Response-time targets themselves are not published.
  • Cision: CisionOne users “Log in and use the Chat feature” or visit separate help sites for each platform; training includes webinars and group sessions (Cision, Contact). Its appendices promise “unlimited access to Supplier's online product support center” and average monthly availability of at least 99.5% (Cision appendix).

User ratings: Muck Rack Capterra, 25 reviews, last updated September 29, 2026; Cision Capterra, 89 reviews, last updated September 30, 2026. Both samples are small and include reviews several years old; the separate CisionOne listing had none. G2 did not load for us, so we report no G2 figures.

Contract Terms and Data

Both vendors publish standard terms that bill a year in advance with no refunds; Muck Rack's terms add auto-renewal and price changes at renewal, while Cision's master agreement leaves renewal to the signed Order and makes customers delete monitoring data when the contract ends. Enterprise contracts can override either set of terms.

  • Muck Rack terms (effective March 12, 2025): subscriptions are “billed in advance on an annual basis and are non-refundable for the subscription period they are purchased for”; to cancel an auto-renewing plan you email your Customer Success Manager; multi-year fees “remain due and owing” if cancelled mid-term; price changes take effect at the next subscription period (Muck Rack terms). Muck Rack says it “retains customer data indefinitely, but can honor deletion requests at time of contract termination”, stores data in AWS US-East-1 and is SOC 2 certified (Muck Rack help).
  • Cision Master Subscription Agreement (last updated September 25, 2025): “All fees are invoiced annually in advance, and are non-cancellable and non-refundable unless stated otherwise on an Order or in these terms and conditions” (Cision MSA). Customers may export their own data during the term; at the end of a monitoring contract they must delete Cision's data except reports and certify it; and Cision may audit monitoring usage against the agreed estimate (Monitoring appendix; Media Database appendix).

Before signing either: get the renewal date, notice period and maximum renewal increase written into the order form, and confirm what happens to lists, notes and reports when you leave.

Where Muck Rack Wins

  • Pitching workflow: sending from your own mailbox with a send-only scope, and automatic matching of pitches to the coverage they produce.
  • Database model: journalist-maintained profiles on top of an editorial team, with a published verification standard.
  • Transparency: plan tiers and support levels by plan are on public pages (both vendors publish their standard contract terms).
  • User sentiment: higher Capterra ratings for ease of use and customer service.

Where Cision Wins

  • Monitoring breadth: TV, radio, paywalled titles and social listening (including Reddit and Bluesky) described within its monitoring packages rather than as per-market add-ons.
  • Global footprint: profiles across 225 countries and territories and monitoring in 96 languages, by Cision's count.
  • Enterprise IT: Teams alerts, SCIM provisioning, mobile apps and a 99.5% availability commitment in its service appendices.
  • Ecosystem: one corporate owner for media data, PR Newswire distribution and Brandwatch consumer intelligence.

Who Should Choose Muck Rack?

Choose Muck Rack if: your team spends most of its time building lists, pitching and proving which pitches became coverage, mainly in English-language and U.S. media.

Avoid Muck Rack if: TV, radio and multi-country monitoring are core requirements and you cannot budget for per-market broadcast add-ons, or you pitch only occasionally.

Best for: in-house and agency teams focused on earned-media outreach.
Starting price: not published; Starter, Standard and Premier are quote-based.
Primary strength: connected database, inbox-based pitching and pitch-to-placement tracking.
Main limitation: broadcast, social listening and the API cost extra.
Verdict: the better default for earned-media outreach.

Who Should Choose Cision?

Choose Cision if: monitoring is the bigger job, you need broadcast and international coverage in one package, or you want media data, wire distribution and social intelligence from one corporate group.

Avoid Cision if: you want published support tiers, prefer a vendor with one current platform, or will not use broadcast and international monitoring enough to justify paying for them.

Best for: enterprise and multinational communications teams with heavy monitoring needs.
Starting price: not published; four CisionOne packages, quote-based.
Primary strength: breadth of monitored sources, including 3,000+ TV and radio stations.
Main limitation: lower user ratings, and contract terms that require deleting monitoring data when you leave.
Verdict: the better choice when monitoring breadth outweighs outreach workflow.

Final Verdict: Muck Rack or Cision?

For a company or PR team whose main goal is earning coverage through journalist outreach, Muck Rack is the better choice: its database, inbox-based pitching and pitch-to-placement tracking are built around that job, its plan tiers and support levels are public, and users rate it higher. Cision is the better choice when monitoring is the larger requirement, especially broadcast, multi-country and social coverage, or when you want one owner for media data, PR Newswire and Brandwatch. The decision depends on three things: how much of your budget goes to monitoring versus outreach, whether you need TV, radio and non-U.S. coverage, and which renewal and data terms you can negotiate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Cision own PR Newswire and Brandwatch?

Yes. Cision's About page lists PR Newswire, CisionOne, Brandwatch and Trajaan as its brands. PR Newswire's own About page says Cision acquired it in 2015, and Platinum Equity, which took Cision private in January 2020, lists the Brandwatch acquisition in June 2021. Muck Rack has no wire service or consumer-intelligence sister company.

Who owns Muck Rack?

Muck Rack, LLC, a Delaware company, is the contracting party in Muck Rack's terms. Muck Rack says it was founded in 2009 and launched its software platform in 2011. Susquehanna Growth Equity lists Muck Rack as a 2022 investment and quotes co-founder Greg Galant describing 13 years of bootstrapping before that deal.

How much does Muck Rack cost in 2026?

Muck Rack does not publish prices. Its pricing page lists Starter, Standard and Premier plans for brands and agencies, all marked Contact us, and says pricing depends on factors including the number of users. Its terms say subscriptions are billed annually in advance and are non-refundable for the period purchased.

How much does Cision cost in 2026?

Cision does not publish prices either. Its CisionOne pricing page lists four packages (Journalist Outreach, Media Monitoring, Media Monitoring + Social and the CisionOne Suite) and says it will recommend a package and provide pricing during a short consultation. Its master agreement says fees are invoiced annually in advance.

Can I cancel a Muck Rack or Cision contract early and get a refund?

Not under the published terms. Muck Rack's terms say a cancellation stops the next renewal but gives no refund for the current annual cycle, and multi-year fees remain due. Cision's master agreement says fees are non-cancellable and non-refundable unless the Order or the agreement says otherwise. Negotiate exit terms before signing.

Can a journalist remove their profile from Muck Rack or Cision?

Yes. Muck Rack lets journalists claim a profile and hide sections or the whole profile, or email hello@muckrack.com to have it removed; only the person listed can request removal. Cision runs a public form to add, update or remove a media profile, and its help center says contacts who have opted out cannot be included in the database.

Which tool do users rate higher?

On Capterra, checked October 7, 2026, Muck Rack averages 4.2 out of 5 from 25 reviews, with 4.2 for ease of use and 4.1 for customer service. Cision averages 3.8 from 89 reviews, with 3.8 and 3.7. The separate CisionOne listing had no reviews. These samples are small and span several years.

Is Google Alerts enough instead of a paid monitoring tool?

For a single brand with modest news volume, free alerts can catch much of the indexed web coverage. They do not cover licensed broadcast clips, paywalled print or journalist contact data, which is most of what Muck Rack and Cision charge for. Start free, and buy when gaps in coverage start costing you responses.

Will either platform guarantee coverage?

No. Both sell databases, pitching tools and monitoring, not placements. Muck Rack tracks which pitches turn into coverage and Cision tracks how a media release drove pickup, but whether a journalist writes the story is the journalist's decision. Pitch quality and fit matter more than the tool.
